Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a very important text for any student of the development of the machine gun, and contains details of the history of this weapon from its inception to the mid-ppoint of the First World War. The evolution of the machine gun is detailed, followed by examples of the use of the wepon in war, and particularly in the Russo-Japanese War. Tactics are examined in detail, both from the historical point of view and tactics of the First World War, an important part of the book. Training is covered, particularly from the British Army side, and the relevant chapter has much of great value in it. Perhaps the most important part of the book however is the examination of the machine guns of the armies then at war. There is in addition a complete chapter on machine guns in the German Army, which is of specific importance to any study of the tactics on the western front. The book is illustrated with a series of good photographs and a number of line drawings of both early and current machine guns, and there is also a large scale drawing of the Vickers gun.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tactical Organization and Uses of Machine Guns in the Field The machine gun has become a permanent factor in the military tactics of the future. The place it is to occupy in the military world is still to be determined, except that it is acknowledged that the machine gun will constitute a powerful addition to the armament of nations. It is the most recent development of inventive genius as applied to the military art, and has until recently been considered as an undemonstrated thing in warfare. It has at last taken the position of a well demonstrated weapon whose capabilities and powers are as well defined and as thoroughly understood as those of the field-piece or the infantry rifle. The next problem is to determine its tactical place, organization, and uses. Then, in this country, remains the problem of forcing recognition of the merits of the new weapon, and necessity for its proper status, upon a reluctant Congress and public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Methods of Machine-Gun Fire A study of this character will not bear casual reading, but must be made the object of thorough consideration and if possible an application of the principles discussed if the full benefit is to be derived from it. One of the most interesting features of this translation is the' method of regulating the extent of zone (or deep) fire by the use of a graduated scale on the hand wheel. 'so far as we are aware, no consideration has ever been given to this question in this country. While zone fire finds little application at the shorter ranges which are the rule in the use of machine guns in trench warfare, the longer ranges at which they will often be used in the war of movements will make necessary some method of compensating for errors in range, deficient observation, varia tions due to setting up of mount, etc. By the method described, a zone of the depth required in any given case to compensate for these factors can be covered with almost absolute uniformity. A valuable hint as to the method of training gun pointers is contained on pages 20 and 21 of the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Organization of Machine Guns and Their Tactical Uses With Notes on Training The data collected and reproduced in this little book will be of value to all those interested in the development of machine guns. That they will play a vastly more important part in the wars of the future than they have done in the past is generally admitted, but the lines in which the development will take place and the principles of their tactical employment, have yet to be confirmed by the experience of war. The sustained rattle of a machine gun has an immense moral effect in proportion to the actual damage which it inflicts, and to make full use of this moral power it is desirable that it should come as a surprise when the success or failure of the combat hangs in the balance. Hence both in attack and defence it will probably be wise to reserve a proportion of the machine guns available, for use at close and decisive ranges where the terrain favours their being brought into action as a surprise. A point which the writer has touched on and upon which I should like to lay stress, is the fact that when massed in batteries they to some extent lose their moral effect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of the Vickers Machine Gun, Model of 1915: With Pack Outfits and Accessories, March 19, 1917 The Vickers machine gun, model of 1915, belongs to that class of automatic guns in which the force of recoil is' utilized to operate it. After the first shot the gun is self-operative, until the ammunition in the cartridge belt is exhausted or until the trigger is released. The force of recoil opens the breech, extracts the empty case, and inserts and fires the next cartridge. The ballistics of this machine gun are similar to those of 'the service rifle and the data given in the handbook of the service rifle No. 1923 is equally applicable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the 101st Machine Gun Battalion N January, 1919, when the Battalion was billeted in Louvieres, someone conceived the idea that the story of our experiences in France ought to be put into permanent form. Accordingly, a general committee from each Company, Headquarters, and the Sanitary Detachment met in the orderly room and elected a Board of Editors and Business Managers. NO very clear idea was put forward as to the make-up of the book; but it was de cided that a history of the Battalion must be written, with a complete record of the individual personnel. This information was collected from Company and Battalion records, and from the men themselves. On arrival at Camp Devens, photographs of each platoon were taken in such a way that cuts could be easily made of the individuals. This, however, did not account for the men who had previously left the outfit, so every effort was made to get in touch with all Of them. It proved to be a slow and difficult undertaking, but by long persistence we have been able to report, All present or accounted for! It is hoped that this book will be treasured by our men as a memento of those stirring days spent together in the service of our Country, and that in years to come it may continue to call to mind the incidents that went to make up our daily life over there. We hope it will bring the picture of our great adventure to the imagination of those who could not Share it with us.
