Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These journals preserve, in his own homey words, James Clyman's experiences on the plains and in the mountains during the heyday of the American fur trade and during the peak of emigration to Oregon and California. The events Clyman recorded were momentous. He was a member of Jedediah Smith's first brigade, which discovered South Pass and opened the Intermountain West to the beaver hunters. Crossing the country during the great migration of 1846, he encountered the Donner party and gave them sound advice they tragically ignored. "Journal of a Mountain Man "is especially valuable, says editor Linda Hasselstrom. The journals are "conspicuously sober and meticulous Clyman shows the mental bent of a surveyor: he scrupulously takes measurements and notes down facts Alongside the vivid but exaggerated sketches some mountain men have left us, we are lucky to have the record of one man who was a keen, thorough, and precise observer."

Book excerpt: The simple aim of this book is to help and support you through life. It is a tool to help you be a stronger version of the man you already are. Back in the day, keeping a journal was the manly thing to do. All the great thinkers, writers and explorers of the past kept a journal on a regular basis - from Ernest Hemmingway to Bruce Lee. It was a simple habitual practice; a clever therapeutic outlet, particularly for men, that has been lost. This book aims to bring it back. While the gym strengthens your body, think about this book as a workout for your mind. This is brain training to build a positive mental attitude and, ultimately, a better and more resilient you. Contains three interactive sections: Warm Up, Hurdles and Strength, each with prompts, challenges and motivators to help get you started. Plus the MindManual, which offers further support, checks and advice to keep your brain training on track.

Book excerpt: The unique social, cultural, and political life of the incomparable LeBron James LeBron James is the hero in two very American tales: one, a success story the nation loves; the other, the latest installment in an ongoing chronicle of American antiblackness. He’s the poor boy from a “broken” home who makes good. He’s also the poor Black boy from a “broken” home who makes good, then at the apex of his career finds “n*****” spray-painted across the gate to his home. James has lived in the public eye ever since high school when his extraordinary athletic skills subjected his every action, every statement, every fashion choice to intense public scrutiny that tells us less about James himself and more about a nation still wrestling with many social inequities. He uses his celebrity not to transcend Blackness, but to give it a place of cultural prominence, and the backlash he receives exposes the frictions between Blackness and a country not fully comfortable with its presence. As a result, James’s story is a revelatory narrative of how much Blackness is loved, hated, misunderstood, and just plain cool in an America that has changed and yet not changed at all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the discovery of long-overlooked interviews conducted just before his death, this is the first biography of the visionary fashion designer Charles James. Christian Dior described him as the inspiration for the “New Look.” Salvador Dalí called his work “soft sculpture,” and Virginia Woolf exclaimed, “He is a genius.” As George Bernard Shaw tells us, only unreasonable men change the world. This portrait of the life and times of Charles James—winner of two Coty awards, and the subject of a 2014 Metropolitan Museum of Art show—draws on the glamour of Europe in the 1930s, and the dazzle of New York City from the ’40s through the ’70s as it travels with James from his birth to privilege in England in 1906 and follows his career through his complex and turbulent relationships with exceptional women such as Elsa Schiaparelli and Eleanor Lambert, ending with his penurious death in New York’s fabled Chelsea Hotel. As engrossing as a novel, as dramatic as grand opera, James’s story will provoke, rivet, and inspire.

Daily Devotion and prayer is a form of communication with God. Daily communication with God will help strengthen your faith as you get to know God more and His promises to you. A prayer journal like this can help you keep track of your prayer journey and help you become more consistent in your habit. Why do you need to talk to God daily through prayer and devotion? Just like any other relationship, daily communication with God is important in developing that strong bond. When we read His word and talk to Him through prayer, we develop a relationship with God. As we get to know Him more, we will therefore understand His will, be able to live our lives according to His will and claim His blessings. How to use this prayer journal: 1. Set yourself off distractions. Set yourself in a place where you will not be distracted from your prayer time. Put your phone on silent mode, do-not-disturb mode or turn it off. Remember, this is your quiet time with God. 2. Start with a prayer. Say a prayer to guide you as you do your devotion for the day. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you God's message as you read the Bible. 3. Read and write down the Scripture. Write on this prayer journal the particular scripture on the Bible that you intend to study for the day. 4. Pause in silence. Pause in silence and ask the Holy Spirit what God wants to reveal to you through the Scripture that you just read. Trust that you will be led and that God will impress upon you His message. 5. Record the impressions. Use this prayer journal to write down any impressions and thoughts that you get. This can be in words or pictures. 6. Reflect. Based on what you read and the impressions that you got, write down on this prayer journal any realizations or learnings. You can also reflect how you can apply it in your life moving forward and how you can teach others to do the same. 7. Pray. End your devotion with a prayer. This can be a prayer of gratitude, repentance, asking God to teach you how apply what you have learned and/or to change your heart if there's a need to. Write down your prayer in this prayer journal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1833, Catherine Jane Hamilton returned from India to Edinburgh to seek a divorce from her husband, the physician Alexander Lesassier. The charge was adultery, and proof for it lay in a trunk containing her husband's personal papers. Catherine won her suit without difficulty and the trunk was deposited in the library of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Alexander Lesassier died in 1839 during the First Afghan War; his trunk and its contents remained untouched for the next century and a half. It has now been opened and a remarkable tale, told in remarkable detail, has spilled forth. The life of Alexander Lesassier, as expertly reconstructed by Lisa Rosner, affords startling insight into the sensibilities of an era and of the man who, in his own eyes and those of the women who adored him, was its most perfect creation. Affable and self-absorbed, engaging and ignoble Lesassier was a physician, military surgeon, and novelist, who was also a shameless opportunist, charming scoundrel, seducer, and survivor. His is the story of a failed medical man who wanted to be something different and saw himself as entitled to more than he had; someone who can always be guaranteed to make the wrong choice, and then protest that he has done well. This fascinating and deeply absorbing book offers rare insights into Georgian, Regency, and early Victorian Britain through the fortunes and misfortunes, hopes and whims, of "the most beautiful man in existence."

Book excerpt: This study examines masculinity and individualism in four American novels of the 1920s and 1930s usually regarded as belonging to the genre of hard-boiled fiction. The novels under study are Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett, The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain, They Shoot Horses, Don't They? by Horace McCoy, and To Have and Have Not by Ernest Hemingway. In this first full-length study of gender in hard-boiled fiction the genre is discussed as a representation of the ideologies of masculinity and individualism. Hard-boiled fiction is located in its historical and cultural context and it is argued that the genre, with its explicit emphasis on masculinity and masculine virtues, attempts to reaffirm a masculine order. The study argues that this emphasis is a counter-reaction to more general changes in the gender relations of the period. Indeed, hard-boiled fiction is argued to be an attempt to reconstruct a masculine identity based on anti-modern values generally accepted in the cultural context of the genre.
