Book excerpt: Have you ever thought something to be true that really wasn't? How did you feel afterwards: ashamed, stupid, stubborn, or did you just not care? There are lots of topics out there where people claim to be experts and in reality some of those people know very little about what they are talking about. One of these areas is the Bible, and after thousands of years, misinformation and false teachings have led many Christians and non Christians alike to believe that there are truths about the Bible that are in fact not associated with or even in the Bible at all. Through a writing style that is both personable and easy to follow, Brandon K Griffin, using a combination of personal experiences, pop culture, and scripture, looks at ten ideas that people believe are in the Bible but really aren't. In doing this he hopes to bring people back to the Word and in turn hope they feel led to become stronger in their own knowledge of Scripture as they better come to understand the Bible for what it really is, the Truth of God.

Book excerpt: A never-before published tale by the author of the best-selling Hittite Warrior, carries the reader back to Ancient Egypt and biblical Jerusalem. It is 701 B.C-rule of the Kushite dynasty in ancient Egypt. Young Prince Taharka, a very minor royal son, succeeds unexpectedly to the throne of Kush and Egypt-a divine rulership. It's not long, however, before a treacherous plot pushes him into sudden exile and into the hands of Amos, an emissary of King Hezekiah seeking help against the Assyrians. Posing as a medical assistant, Taharka journeys with Amos to Judea where he encounters two kings in conflict. His true identity suddenly uncovered, he must choose with whom he will fight-the mighty Assyrian, Sennacherib, promising alliance or Hezekiah, the Jew who trusts in Yahweh. A novel inspired by research on the historical King Taharka and his period.

All to prove to the Assyrian king that he gave no allegiance to Yaweh. Then he anointed the young Hezekiah to rule Judah in his stead. O Lord, Hezekiah prayed, make me the best king Judah has ever had. Hezekiah made mistakes. He had tragic failures, yet his life shows the heights and depths we all faceand how God can lead us through both.

Book excerpt: The Three Miraculous Prayers of King Hezekiah tells the story of the good Jewish King Hezekiah, who lived, ruled, struggled, prayed, and saw incredible miracles 2,700 years ago. King Hezekiah was a man desperate for Gods help in ways that we can all relate to today. While you may not be a kingwith all the benefits and troubles it bringsyou probably have people who depend on you for guidance and protection. In todays world, you may find yourself unemployed, seriously ill, alone and facing great adversity, or dealing with all kinds of other troubles that seem way too big to handle on your own. In The Three Miraculous Prayers of King Hezekiah, author W. D. Crowder shares the story of King Hezekiah to illustrate how we can overcome odds that sometimes seem insurmountable in order to survive troubling times. Crowder explores how a seemingly obscure Jewish King of the tiny southern Israeli Kingdom of Judah dealt with and miraculously overcame many of the same issues that personally impact you today. The example of this good man King Hezekiah may astonish you. The Three Miraculous Prayers of King Hezekiah tells a fascinating, true story supported by the Bible and other historical records and addresses problems that are relevant to us today in these troubling times.

Book excerpt: This study explores one of the oldest and most central issues of the Hebrew Bible -- the compositional history of 1--2 Kings. Its approach does not proceed from the assumption prevalent since the time of de Wette, namely, that the origins of 1--2 Kings should be explained through a process of Deuteronomistic literary redaction rooted in the Josianic reform. Rather, this study reads 1--2 Kings through the lens of other texts with similar genres existing in its historical context. More precisely, the texts under question belong to the genre of "chronography": kinglists, chronicles, and royal inscriptions, possessing similar or, in some cases, identical structures and motifs to those found in 1--2 Kings. This study includes a literary-critical analysis of every main structural feature of the regnal framework: regnal year totals, synchronisms, geographic filiations, naming the queen mother, source citations, death and burial formulae, regnal evaluations, royal predecessor-formula, and cultic reports. It also seeks to determine the extent of the original framework by mapping its opening and conclusion. The results of the study indicate that the framework's opening was in Solomon's account and its original climax was in Hezekiah's account and represented the latter as a royal YHWHist par excellence excellence, the restorer of order who limited sacrificial space to Jerusalem. The genealogical structure of this Hezekian History emerges from the Davidic royal ideology rooted in Jerusalem. There is no decisive indication that calls for the original framework structure's classification as Deuteronomistic or Josianic. The author of the framework wrote during the early-to-mid seventh century B.C.E. and reported the major historical events surrounding Hezekiah's reign, including the survival of Jerusalem in 701 B.C.E. -- in the B1 narrative -- as well as his centralizing reform.

Book excerpt: “This country's leading hell-raiser" (The Nation) shares his impassioned counsel to young radicals on how to effect constructive social change and know “the difference between being a realistic radical and being a rhetorical one.” First published in 1971 and written in the midst of radical political developments whose direction Alinsky was one of the first to question, this volume exhibits his style at its best. Like Thomas Paine before him, Alinsky was able to combine, both in his person and his writing, the intensity of political engagement with an absolute insistence on rational political discourse and adherence to the American democratic tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some differences between Catholicism and Protestantism can be tricky to grasp, but one of them just requires the ability to count: Catholic bibles have seventy-three books, whereas Protestant bibles have sixty-sis - plus an appendix with the strange title Apocrypha. What's the story here? Protestants claim that the medieval Catholic Church added six extra books that had never been considered part of the Old Testament, either by Jews or early Christians. Catholics say that the Protestant Reformers removed those books, long considered part of Sacred Scripture, because they didn't like what they contained. In Why Catholic Bibles Are Bigger, Gary Michuta presents a revised and expanded version of his authoritative work on this key issue. Combing the historical record from pre-Christian times to the Patristic era to the Reformation and its aftermath, he traces the canon controversy through the writings and actions of its major players.
