Book excerpt: A masterpiece in the tradition of the Decameron and the Canterbury Tales, Juan Ruiz's fourteenth-century Spanish narrative poem combines the comic and the serious, the bawdy and the practical, the satiric and the tender, the devout and the blasphemous. In a first prose translation, Professors Mignani and Di Cesare succeed in conveying the vitality and sly humor of the original. The poem consists of a loosely unified series of fourteen amorous adventures of the Archpriest of Hita, interlaced with debates, fabliaux, fables, and exempla. Ruiz suggests that while man ought to seek buen amor (true love, or love of God), he is prone to loco amor, or worldly love. The Book proposes to show human folly so that men may be forewarned of the bad and choose the good. The episodes related in the stanzas and in songs in various lyrical styles parody such conventions as courtly love, epic battle, or church ritual. Ruiz was clearly fascinated by the concrete, as well as the allegorical, for his episodes have dates and actual settings, and popular speech is incorporated into his verses. In their introduction, the translators survey the major scholarly studies of the poem and offer their own critical reading of it. Their annotated bibliography and notes to the translation will be useful to students as well as scholars.

A BuzzFeed Best Summer Read of 2021 When a fake relationship between scientists meets the irresistible force of attraction, it throws one woman's carefully calculated theories on love into chaos. As a third-year Ph.D. candidate, Olive Smith doesn't believe in lasting romantic relationships—but her best friend does, and that's what got her into this situation. Convincing Anh that Olive is dating and well on her way to a happily ever after was always going to take more than hand-wavy Jedi mind tricks: Scientists require proof. So, like any self-respecting biologist, Olive panics and kisses the first man she sees. That man is none other than Adam Carlsen, a young hotshot professor—and well-known ass. Which is why Olive is positively floored when Stanford's reigning lab tyrant agrees to keep her charade a secret and be her fake boyfriend. But when a big science conference goes haywire, putting Olive's career on the Bunsen burner, Adam surprises her again with his unyielding support and even more unyielding...six-pack abs. Suddenly their little experiment feels dangerously close to combustion. And Olive discovers that the only thing more complicated than a hypothesis on love is putting her own heart under the microscope.

How can we be the kind of church member who makes a real difference? This engaging book by Tony Merida explores what church is, why being part of it is exciting, and why it’s worthy of our love and commitment. He sets out eight privileges and responsibilities of a church member: to belong, to welcome, to gather, to care, to serve, to honour, to witness and to send. As we see how wonderful it is to belong to God’s family and be a part of his amazing witness to both the earthly and the heavenly realms, we’ll grow in our love for and commitment to our local church. This is a great book for every churchgoer to read, whether they’re new or have been attending for some time but need re-energising with God’s vision for the local church. With a discussion guide at the end of the book, Love Your Church is also a great resource for small groups.

This year, however, outside realities are pressing hard: Pamela and John, married for four decades, know that time is catching up with them. And trouble is brewing in the lives of their four children. Cassie, the cossetted youngest, is in the throes of an affair with a married man; Elizabeth, her awkward older sister, is struggling with a faltering second marriage; Peter, the eldest and designated inheritor of Ashley House, is beginning to meet resistance to such a prospect from his career-orientated wife. Only Charlie, the charming and carefree younger son, and his wife Serena, seem truly content, with nothing to worry about except their adolescent twin girls and the simpler teething troubles of their toddler. Absorbed in their own lives, not one of them is prepared when real tragedy strikes, rocking their world to its core, changing them all forever. Praise for Amanda Brookfield: 'An engaging, emotionally-charged and intriguing story' Michelle Gorman 'No one gets to the heart of human relationships quite so perceptively as Brookfield.' The Mirror 'Unputdownable. Perceptive. Poignant. I loved it.' bestselling author Patricia Scanlan on Before I Knew You 'If Joanna Trollope is the queen of the Aga Saga, then Amanda Brookfield must be a strong contender for princess.' Book excerpt: The brave, wry, irresistible journey of a fiercely independent American woman who finds everything she ever wanted in the most unexpected place. Shufu: in Japanese it means “housewife,” and it’s the last thing Tracy Slater ever thought she’d call herself. A writer and academic, Tracy carefully constructed a life she loved in her hometown of Boston. But everything is upended when she falls head over heels for the most unlikely mate: a Japanese salary-man based in Osaka, who barely speaks her language. Deciding to give fate a chance, Tracy builds a life and marriage in Japan, a country both fascinating and profoundly alienating, where she can read neither the language nor the simplest social cues. There, she finds herself dependent on her husband to order her food, answer the phone, and give her money. When she begins to learn Japanese, she discovers the language is inextricably connected with nuanced cultural dynamics that would take a lifetime to absorb. Finally, when Tracy longs for a child, she ends up trying to grow her family with a Petri dish and an army of doctors with whom she can barely communicate. And yet, despite the challenges, Tracy is sustained by her husband’s quiet love, and being with him feels more like “home” than anything ever has. Steadily and surely, she fills her life in Japan with meaningful connections, a loving marriage, and wonder at her adopted country, a place that will never feel natural or easy, but which provides endless opportunities for growth, insight, and sometimes humor. A memoir of travel and romance, The Good Shufu is a celebration of the life least expected: messy, overwhelming, and deeply enriching in its complications.

Book excerpt: The world of the Robson family is a complicated mixture of suffocation and strength, and Claire's parents' lives are as small and safe as they can make them. A mother who wants her daughter to fulfill her own dreams and a daughter who wants to be everything her mother is not--both may love each other, but neither understands the other. Claire Robson escapes her village and her family through a scholarship to university, where she easily becomes a hippie, marries the son of a family far wealthier than her own, and plunges headlong into domesticity. But before long she leaves her husband and rides her motorcycle straight into the lesbian community to become first a squatter, then a school principal. This memoir reads like a novel, and is by turns laugh-out-loud funny and heartbreakingly poignant. It is a coming out story that tackles the trade-offs some gay people make after they leave the closet and choose acceptance instead of activism, work instead of sex, success instead of happiness, and silence instead of truth. While this may not seem to be everyone's story, the author's courage, honesty, warmth, and humor make it an unquestionably universal one.

Book excerpt: Hello, this is Mikey and Elaine Hampson, parents to two wonderful boys and the founders of Dollars of Love. We wanted to tell each of you how proud we are of you for opening this book and taking the first step toward changing how the youth of today view the meaning of becoming rich. In this book, you will find everything you need to create an environment in your household, classroom, ball field - or anywhere for that matter - to empower young people to pursue love and good deeds first and, through first-hand experiences, teach them the power and concept of "when we give, we receive." From the time we are born, society slams down our throats that children need to pursue accolades and financial success; we are taught that these are life's most important treasures. Children start school, where good grades are treasured and winning awards are the focal point for anything they do, and they treasure these trophies. Our children are taught that good grades will lead to good colleges, and this, in turn, will result in a high-paying job where we can buy lots of things. To make matters worse, we make children perform chores for money so that they can buy things they treasure. What sort of pathways in their brains are we creating at such a young age? In our opinion, these pathways lead to selfishness instead of selflessness. It also hinders the pursuit of their higher calling, instead taught to suppress it to focus on society's harmful, generalized concept of treasure. We, as parents, decided that we did not want our children to grow up idolizing the treasures society tells us we need. They will have plenty of time to work and make money, but in our children's formidable years, we decided it was necessary to provide them with a foundation for pursuing love, kindness, and good deeds. Thus, the birth of Dollars of Love - a currency available to all walks of life, regardless of socioeconomic status. Dollars of Love is the most powerful kind of currency because it is earned through performing good deeds and actions of love. So, what, exactly, is a dollar of love? It is what your kids receive when they perform good deeds. At the end of the day, they will reflect upon each dollar of love earned and write on the back of it how it made them feel. At the end of the week, they can turn their dollars of love in for a prize. In the beginning, the prizes will reinforce their positive behavior, but as the weeks progress, the children will realize that the action of love earning them the dollar of love made them feel better than any prize they were awarded. This creates a pathway where it becomes second nature for the child to perform a good deed. It becomes a part of who they are. We also inadvertently came across the concept of saving the dollars of love and trading them for rewards of various sizes. This taught our children patience and fiscal responsibility, which are important later in life.
