Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is true that good manners, like good morals, are best taught by the teacher's example. It is also true that definite lessons, in which the subject can be considered in its appropriate divisions, are of no little value if we would have our children attain to "that finest of the fine arts, a beautiful behavior." Such lessons should be as familiar and conversational as possible. They ought to be talks rather than lectures; and the children should be encouraged to do a large part of the talking. Children that come from homes where good manners are taught and practiced, will be glad to repeat the precepts of politeness learned in the home circle; and those less favored will not want to be behind in this hitherto unstudied branch. We must remember that many children hear no mention of politeness outside the school-room, and are uncouth and rude, not so much because they choose to be, as because they do not know how to be otherwise. For some classes the lessons as arranged in this little book may be too long, for others too short. They are outlines merely, to be filled in and supplemented by each teacher, adding to, taking from, and varying them at her discretion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American families are sick of rudeness, aggression, and unruly behavior. They are searching for ways to cool down society -- and bring up kids who win at life by peaceful, compassionate, and rational means, rather than the opposite. This is the book that casts out a new lifeline to them and speaks positively to their deepest needs and yearnings. Explaining that kindness is the heart and core of civility and manners in any society, Letitia Baldrige, America's number one best-selling authority on manners, has finally written the book that millions have been waiting for: a road map to raising and guiding kids who succeed in life through decency and honor. "It all starts in the home," says Baldrige, as she shows parents and other concerned adults how to teach kids to: Gain respect and become leaders -- at home, at school, and in the larger world -- without becoming wimps or bullies. Defuse explosive situations with words and actions that turn hostility into harmony. Use conciliation instead of confrontation with peers, authority figures, and others. Be courteous and compassionate with family and friends and out in public while still standing up for themselves. Learn behaviors that will make them liked and respected and will make the world around them a better place as they grow up. And much more... Baldrige accomplishes this using real-life examples of encounters between adults and young people and the day-to-day interactions between young peers -- at home, at school, and out in the world -- plus the compelling and often personal true stories and anecdotes that have made her other books so warm and conversational and loved by millions. In his longtime best-selling Book of Virtues, William Bennett showed us the values we should strive for to get life back on track again. In her book, Letitia Baldrige shows us how to apply those principles in everyday life, twenty-four hours a day -- and get results!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When did you last tell your children to put their hand over their mouth when they yawn? When did you last suggest that when they are introduced to someone they should shake hands firmly and look them in the eye? Do you suggest that they should wait until everyone is served before they eat rather than hoover up the best bit for themselves? Do you demand that your young daughter dress decorously lest she elicit outraged looks? Do you think that the children of today have disgraceful manners? Unlike, of course, when you were young ... Well, that's certainly what Erasmus of Rotterdam thought in 1530 when he published De Civilitate Morum Puerilium: A Handbook on Good Manners for Children. He felt that learning good manners was crucial to a child's upbringing, and that the uncouth and ill-disciplined behaviour around him demanded a new kind of book. After all, as William of Wykeham memorably said in the 1350s, 'Manners maketh man'. A Handbook on Good Manners for Children is considered to be the first treatise in Western Europe on the moral and practical education of children. It was a massive bestseller - indeed the biggest-selling book of the sixteenth century - going into 130 editions over 300 years and being translated into 22 languages within ten years of its publication. In it, Erasmus concerns himself with matters such as how to dress, how to behave at table, how to converse with one's elders and contemporaries, how to address the opposite sex and much else. For example: Table Manners 'It's just as rude to lick greasy fingers as it is to wipe them on your clothing, Use a cloth or napkin instead.' 'Some people, no sooner than they've sat down, immediately stick their hands into the dishes of food. This is the manner of wolves.' 'Making a raucous noise or shrieking intentionally when you sneeze, or showing off by carrying on sneezing on purpose, is very ill-mannered.' 'To fidget around in your seat, and to settle first on one buttock and then the next, gives the impression that you are repeatedly farting, or trying to fart.' The advice is as relevant today as it was 500 years ago.
