Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Enthusiastic readers are sometimes heard to say of a book: 'I couldn't put it down.' This is obviously either a metaphor or else a gross hyperbole. But I can't recall any book as to which in my case it came nearer to the literal truth than The Bodhisattva Question." -- Owen Barfield According to Eastern tradition, the twelve sublime beings known as bodhisattvas are the great teachers of humanity. One after another, they descend into earthly incarnation until they fulfil their earthly missions. At that point, they rise to buddahood and are no longer obliged to return in a physical form. However, before bodhisattvas becomes a buddhas, they announce the name of their successors. According to Rudolf Steiner, the future Maitreya Buddha--or the "Bringer of Good," as his predecessor named him--incarnated in a human body in the twentieth century. Presuming this to be so, then who was this person? Theosophists believed they had discovered the bodhisattva in an Indian boy named Krishnamurti, who did indeed grow up to become a teacher of some magnitude. Adolf Arenson and Elisabeth Vreede, both students of Steiner, made independent examinations of this question in relation to Steiner's personal mission. They reached contrasting conclusions. More recently, a claim has been made that Valentin Tomberg--a student of Anthroposophy but later an influential Roman Catholic--was the bodhisattva. In this book, Meyer analyzes these conflicting theories and demonstrates how the question can be useful as an exercise in developing sound judgment in spiritual matters. Elisabeth Vreede's two lectures on the subject, included here in full, are a valuable contribution to our understanding of the true nature and being of Rudolf Steiner. Includes a new afterword by T. H. Meyer and Carla Vlad.

This book was released on 2018-07-06 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book now lying in your hands holds a challenge to the Anthroposophical Movement to take up once again the Bodhisattva Question. That question is: In what human being did the Maitreya Bodhisattva appear in the twentieth century? This became a consuming topic of discussion among pupils of Rudolf Steiner during parts of the first half of the twentieth century, both before and after the founding of the Anthroposophical Society. Its significance can be judged by two statements Rudolf Steiner made in 1911: that "humanity must gain the capacity... to see the supersensible Christ, and for that the spiritual scientific movement is there. That is its mission: to create the conditions that bring about an understanding for the Christ, in order then to make it possible to see the Christ;" and that the Maitreya Bodhisattva "will be the real herald of the Christ in etheric raiment."Yet today this question of the identity of the Maitreya and the teachings he gave the world has all but disappeared from the minds of the members of the Anthroposophical Movement, even to the extent that the concept of a bodhisattva is unfamiliar to many.Bodhisattvas, Rudolf Steiner explained, are human beings who follow a path of development different from the rest of humanity. They are at home in the World of Providence, a plane of existence lying between Devachan and Nirvana. Twelve of them gather around the Christ and receive from Him the impulses that they bring in turn as teachings to humanity. Bodhisattvas are not born into bodies as are the rest of humanity, but incorporate into a human bearer, as the Christ incorporated into Jesus of Nazareth at the Jordan. The Bodhisattva Question is therefore one of finding which historical personality became the bearer of the Bodhisattva in the twentieth century. At the end of his path of teaching humanity over many incorporations, a bodhisattva becomes enlightened and is elevated to buddhahood; so it was that, in the sixth century B.C., the Gautama Bodhisattva became the Gautama Buddha. Since that time, the bodhisattva who has been most active within humanity, incorporating once every hundred years, is the Maitreya Bodhisattva. His particular task, as Rudolf Steiner indicated, is leading humanity towards an experience of the Etheric Christ.Already in 1909, Rudolf Steiner underscored the importance of knowing and understanding what the bodhisattvas have to say who follow the Christ, the first of them being the Maitreya.Rudolf Steiner spoke of the Maitreya Bodhisattva often between 1909 and 1912, the period during which he was also speaking about the return of the Christ in the etheric. Among much else about the Maitreya, Rudolf Steiner said, "[H]e is also incorporated now." From misinterpretations of that statement have issued some of the many misconceptions and false claims regarding the personality in whom the Maitreya appeared in the twentieth century. This book is an anthroposophic study using spiritual-scientific methodology. The authors analyze the basic ideas and concepts of the two main branches of the 20th century European Esoteric Christianity: Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophic study and the teachings of the Universal White Brotherhood given by the Master Peter Deunov. This book can be thematically referred to the Christian spiritual tradition, freely and scientifically developed in 20th century.

Book excerpt: This fascinating introduction to the intersection between religion, neuroscience, and moral philosophy asks: Can there be a Buddhism without karma, nirvana, and reincarnation that is compatible with the rest of knowledge? If we are material beings living in a material world—and all the scientific evidence suggests that we are—then we must find existential meaning, if there is such a thing, in this physical world. We must cast our lot with the natural rather than the supernatural. Many Westerners with spiritual (but not religious) inclinations are attracted to Buddhism—almost as a kind of moral-mental hygiene. But, as Owen Flanagan points out in The Bodhisattva's Brain, Buddhism is hardly naturalistic. In The Bodhisattva's Brain, Flanagan argues that it is possible to discover in Buddhism a rich, empirically responsible philosophy that could point us to one path of human flourishing. Some claim that neuroscience is in the process of validating Buddhism empirically, but Flanagan'’ naturalized Buddhism does not reduce itself to a brain scan showing happiness patterns. “Buddhism naturalized,” as Flanagan constructs it, offers instead a fully naturalistic and comprehensive philosophy, compatible with the rest of knowledge—a way of conceiving of the human predicament, of thinking about meaning for finite material beings living in a material world.

Book excerpt: “A bold, playful, and invigorating” look at how asking challenging questions—without expectations—can lead Buddhist practitioners to powerful spiritual insights (Pema Chödrön) How do we find a resting place in a world that is complex and always changing? How do we practice spirituality beyond the limits of blind acceptance and doubt? Elizabeth Mattis-Namgyel proposes that when we ask challenging questions like these, we access our deepest intelligence and most powerful insights. “When we ask a question,” Mattis-Namgyel suggests, “our mind is engaged yet open. The process of inquiry protects us from our tendency to reach static conclusions. Instead, we can respond to uncertainty and change with inquisitiveness and a sense of wonder.” By telling the story of the Buddha's awakening, Mattis-Namgyel shows us that by contemplating hard questions—and by not simply rejecting seeming contradictions in his experience—the Buddha became enlightened. Her book guides us on a provocative, playful, and spiritually enriching journey of contemplation that could last a lifetime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genealogies of Mahāyāna Buddhism offers a solution to a problem that some have called the holy grail of Buddhist studies: the problem of the “origins” of Mahāyāna Buddhism. In a work that contributes both to a general theory of religion and power for religious studies as well as to the problem of the origin of a Buddhist movement, Walser argues that that it is the neglect of political and social power in the scholarly imagination of the history of Buddhism that has made the origins of Mahāyāna an intractable problem. Walser challenges commonly-held assumptions about Mahāyāna Buddhism, offering a fascinating new take on its genealogy that traces its doctrines of emptiness and mind-only from the present day back to the time before Mahāyāna was “Mahāyāna.” In situating such concepts in their political and social contexts across diverse regimes of power in Tibet, China and India, the book shows that what was at stake in the Mahāyāna championing of the doctrine of emptiness was the articulation and dissemination of court authority across the rural landscapes of Asia. This text will be will be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students and scholars of Buddhism, religious studies, history and philosophy.

This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bodhisattva’s Way of Life is one of the most dearly beloved Buddhist texts, which has been taught and often quoted by the Dalai Lama as well as many other great Tibetan masters. Because of its relevance to modern times, his text has been translated into a dozen languages. The Bodhisattva's Way of Life was written by the eighth century Indian Bodhisattva, Shantideva, and is a comprehensive outline of everything one needs to know to be a Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva is someone who decides to work towards achieving enlightenment and to not give up this task until all other sentient beings are liberated. The Bodhisattva's Way of life begins by explaining how and why to make offerings to the Three Jewels and how take the bodhisattva vow (which is still being done this way 1,400 years later). The book also covers how to develop compassion towards those we like and also those who want to harm us. It explains the need to develop selflessness and how to actually do this, as well as how to develop patience with those people and things that obstruct us. It also describes how we should carry ourself in a peaceful and pleasing way to others and how to develop diligence and how to practice meditation. The famous ninth chapter, finally, explains how we should understand emptiness of all phenomena. This edition of The Bodhisattva's Way of Life is unique because it combines both a translation of the root text with each verse or set of verses followed by a lucid and relevant commentary by Thrangu Rinpoche. Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche is very well suited for this task, being a renowned Buddhist scholar who has had three decades of experience teaching students in centers across Asia, Europe, and North America. Thrangu Rinpoche has been teaching Western and Asian students Buddhism for thirty years and is author of 50 books on Buddhism. He holds the highest Lharampa degree for mastering the major teachings of all four lineages of Tibetan Buddhism. Because of his outstanding scholarship he was appointed by the Dalai Lama to be a personal tutor for the Seventeenth Karmapa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2014 has a special significance that is addressed in this book by Robert Powell and Estelle Isaacson. Dr. Robert Powell is a spiritual researcher who in this short work—and in many other books—brings the results of his own research investigations. Estelle Isaacson is a contemporary seer who is gifted with a remarkable ability to perceive new streams of revelation. Both have been blessed in an extraordinary way by virtue of accessing the realm wherein Christ is presently to be found.

Powell makes the critical point that the year 2014 not only denotes the beginning of a new 600-year cultural wave in history but also that there is an ancient prophecy applying to this very same year, 2014, which can be interpreted as pointing to the onset of the twenty-first-century incarnation of the Bodhisattva who will become the future Maitreya Buddha, the successor to Gautama Buddha. Powell also makes the crucial point that the Maitreya Buddha awaited in Buddhism is the same as the Kalki Avatar expected in Hinduism.

Powell’s contribution serves as an introduction to Isaacson’s offering, comprising a series of six visions relating to the future Maitreya Buddha. The visions are highly inspirational, communicating something of the profound spirituality, peace, radiance, and, above all, goodness of this Bodhisattva who is Gautama Buddha’s successor. His title, Maitreya, means “bearer of the good,” and in Isaacson’s visions he emerges as a remarkable force for good in our time.

Also included in this book are two appendices: A Survey of Rudolf Steiner’s Indications Concerning the Maitreya Buddha and the Kalki Avatar and Valentin Tomberg’s Indications Concerning the Coming Buddha-Avatar, Maitreya-Kalki. A third appendix discusses the significance of Rudolf Steiner’s Foundation Stone of Love meditation as a heralding of Christ’s Second Coming.
