Book Synopsis Blue & Gray in Black & White by : Brayton Harris
Download or read book Blue & Gray in Black & White written by Brayton Harris and published by Potomac Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blue & Gray in Black & White is account of the techniques, tactics, and personalities of the news-gathering industry during the American Civil War. This cataclysmic event accelerated the transformation of the content of newspapers from pallid literature and opinion to robust, partisan reporting of vital events, real and imagined. The written record, however, is only part of the story. Much of the impact of Civil War journalism derives from its illustrations, and twenty-two examples of these are reproduced here. Harris also follows the war's most famous artists, including Winslow Homer, as they and their reporter brethren braved the dangers of the battlefield to capture some of our most memorable images of war.

Book Synopsis Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White 35012 by : Adam Hamilton

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone agrees that America is polarized, with ever-hardening positions held by people less and less willing to listen to one another. No one agrees on what to do about it. One solution that hasn’t yet been tried, says Adam Hamilton, is for thinking persons of faith to model for the rest of the country a richer, more thoughtful conversation on the political, moral, and religious issues that divide us. Hamilton rejects the easy assumptions and sloppy analysis of black and white thinking, seeking instead the truth that resides on all sides of the issues, and offering a faithful and compassionate way forward. He writes, "I don't expect you to agree with everything I've written. I expect that in the future even I won't agree with everything I've written here. The point is not to get you to agree with me, but to encourage you to think about what you believe. In the end I will be inviting those of you who find this book resonates with what you feel is true, to join the movement to pursue a middle way between the left and the right - to make your voices heard - and to model for our nation and for the church, how we can listen, learn, see truth as multi-sided, and love those with whom we disagree." Book Synopsis Joseph Wheeler: Uniting the Blue and the Gray by : Anders M. Kinney
Download or read book Joseph Wheeler: Uniting the Blue and the Gray written by Anders M. Kinney and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-06-25 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text analyzes and evaluates the participation of Joseph Wheeler in the Spanish-American War. Southerners believe that Wheeler had a significant impact on the unification of the North and South during this period. Second, this historiographic writing acquaints the secondary teacher of history with the importance of the war in America's move toward imperialism. This research suggests there is a relationship between Joseph Wheeler and the healing of the Civil War wounds. This research investigates two different approaches to Wheeler's involvement in the war. The first approach involved the historical interpretation that McKinley's decision to appoint Wheeler as a Volunteer General was based on political expediency and not on ability. The second approach involved the examination of General Wheeler's primary documents and their interpretations of his participation in the war. Results of this research showed the following: (1) Joseph Wheeler's involvement in the Spanish-American War hastened the healing of North/South wounds; (2) Wheeler's involvement in the overall scheme of the war was more than token; and (3) Wheeler was perceived as an American hero by all regions after the war.

Book excerpt: 1916, in an alternative world. The independent Confederate States of America has gone to the aid of its old ally Britain, and become bogged down in the stalemate on the Western Front. At a Confederate airfield in France, a new pilot reports for duty: Lieutenant Amos Ninekiller, of the independent Cherokee Nation, comes to see how the white people wage war. He isn't going to like it...A dark antiwar comedy from the author of Journey to Fusang and The Ballad of Billy Badass and the Rose of Turkestan, now in print again in this new edition, specially revised and corrected by the author. The Wild Blue and the Gray is a tragicomic alternate look at the first great catastrophe of the twentieth century. Laughter is often the only way to shield ourselves from pain that would otherwise be intolerable. Sanders understands this well - and also that, the more things change, the more they sometimes look the same. - Harry Turtledove. God damn! I liked Sanders' new book! It pushes all the right buttons for me - a great protagonist, WWI fighter pilots, terrific background, and - mainly - a fine story with really clever twists. satisfying place to stop. The Wild Blue and the Gray is an absolutely captivating story by one of the hottest new talents in the business. Subtle, strong, gutsy, humorous - it's got it all. Watch this man. You won't regret it. - Roger Zelazny.
