To this is added a succinct chronological detail of some incidents in the life of Col. Theodorick Bland, such as are to be found scattered through the pages of this compilation. Several years since, perhaps in 1833, I chanced to hear, (from the landlord and a gentleman of the neighborhood chatting together in a tavern porch, ) at City Point, mention made of the existence of certain old manuscripts of Colonel Bland. Learning on inquiry that Cawson's, the former seat of Colonel Bland, where these papers were said to be, was distant only a moderate walk from the Point, and being directed the way, I soon struck a footpath, winding along the verge of that elevated plateau which overlooks the fine wide sheet of water, where the "pleasant river of Apamatuck" empties into the James, and in a few minutes reached the house. The lady there, (with whom I had not then the pleasure of an acquaintance, ) on coming to the door and learning the antiquarian purport of my visit, very obligingly reached down a bundle of letters of divers revolutionary worthies, from the interstices of the eaves of the porch, where they were nicely pigeon-holed. The shortness of my time allowed me merely to glance at this parcel, when a little mulatto boy, with a key in his hand, conducted me to a small new-built out-house in one corner of the yard, wherein, on opening the door, was found a capacious wooden chest, full to the brim of manuscripts, lying topsy-turvy, "rudis indigestuquc moles." One of the first my eye lit upon was a letter, on an ample sheet, from General Washington, dated at Cambridge, Mass. The manuscripts were (many of them) mouse-nibbled, rat-eaten, stained, torn and faded; and they certainly breathed any thing but "Sabean odors from the spicy shore of Araby the blest." All this, however, only served to enhance their value, in an antiquarian point of view. I had barely time to thrust my hand among them, turn over a few, and sigh that I could not then explore their merits to the bottom. But "time and tide wait for no man," not even for an antiquary: the sound of the stage-horn suddenly interrupted my revolutionary reflections, and rendered it necessary for me to bid an abrupt adieu to the enchanted chest. Book Synopsis America's School for War by : Peter J. Schifferle
Download or read book America's School for War written by Peter J. Schifferle and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2010-04-05 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the United States entered World War II, it took more than industrial might to transform its tiny army—smaller than even Portugal's—into an overseas fighting force of more than eight and a half million. Peter Schifferle contends that the determination of American army officers to be prepared for the next big war was an essential component in America's ultimate triumph over its adversaries. Crucial to that preparation were the army schools at Fort Leavenworth. Interwar Army officers, haunted by the bloodshed of World War I's Meuse-Argonne Offensive, fully expected to return to Europe to conclude the "unfinished business" of that conflict, and they prepared well. Schifferle examines for the first time precisely how they accomplished this through a close and illuminating look at the students, faculty, curriculum, and essential methods of instruction at Fort Leavenworth. He describes how the interwar officer corps there translated the experiences of World War I into effective doctrine, engaged in intellectual debate on professional issues, conducted experiments to determine the viability of new concepts, and used military professional education courses to substitute for the experience of commanding properly organized and resourced units. Schifferle highlights essential elements of war preparation that only the Fort Leavenworth education could provide, including intensive instruction in general staff procedures, hands-on experience with the principles and techniques of combined arms, and the handling of large division-sized formations in combat. This readied army officers for an emerging new era of global warfare and enabled them to develop the leadership decision making they would need to be successful on the battlefield. But Schifferle offers more than a recitation of curriculum development through the skillful interweaving of personal stories about both school experiences and combat operations, collectively recounting the human and professional development of the officer corps from 1918 to 1945. Well crafted and insightful, Schifferle's meticulously researched study shows how and why the Fort Leavenworth experience was instrumental in producing that impressive contingent of military officers who led the U.S. Army to final victory in World War II. By the end of the book, the attentive reader will also fully comprehend why the military professionals at Fort Leavenworth have come to think of it as the "Intellectual Center of the Army."

Download or read book The Generalissimo written by Jay Taylor and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-30 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most momentous stories of the last century is China’s rise from a self-satisfied, anti-modern, decaying society into a global power that promises to one day rival the United States. Chiang Kai-shek, an autocratic, larger-than-life figure, dominates this story. A modernist as well as a neo-Confucianist, Chiang was a man of war who led the most ancient and populous country in the world through a quarter century of bloody revolutions, civil conflict, and wars of resistance against Japanese aggression. In 1949, when he was defeated by Mao Zedong—his archrival for leadership of China—he fled to Taiwan, where he ruled for another twenty-five years. Playing a key role in the cold war with China, Chiang suppressed opposition with his “white terror,” controlled inflation and corruption, carried out land reform, and raised personal income, health, and educational levels on the island. Consciously or not, he set the stage for Taiwan’s evolution of a Chinese model of democratic modernization. Drawing heavily on Chinese sources including Chiang’s diaries, The Generalissimo provides the most lively, sweeping, and objective biography yet of a man whose length of uninterrupted, active engagement at the highest levels in the march of history is excelled by few, if any, in modern history. Jay Taylor shows a man who was exceedingly ruthless and temperamental but who was also courageous and conscientious in matters of state. Revealing fascinating aspects of Chiang’s life, Taylor provides penetrating insight into the dynamics of the past that lie behind the struggle for modernity of mainland China and its relationship with Taiwan.
