At its peak in the early first century BC, it included much of the southern, eastern, and northern littoral, becoming one of the most important Hellenistic dynasties not founded by a successor of Alexander the Great. It also posed one of the greatest challenges to Roman imperial expansion in the east. Not until 63 BC, after many violent clashes, was Rome able to subjugate the kingdom and its last charismatic ruler Mithridates VI. This book provides the first general history, in English, of this important kingdom from its mythic origins in Greek literature (e.g., Jason and the Golden Fleece) to its entanglements with the late Roman Republic. Duane Roller presents its rulers and their complex relationships with the powers of the eastern Mediterranean and Near East, most notably Rome. Book excerpt: The Black Sea is the largest of the World meromictic basins -- those bodies of water characterized by a permanent halocline. In meromictic basins close to sea coasts, the halocline may form under the influence of saline sea water, which penetrates via shallow inlets or is seeping through the sand bars. Being more dense, this water fills deeper layers. This is the origin of the Black Sea and of numerous small meromictic estuarine lakes, lagoons, and fjords. The Black Sea is the largest meromictic basin of this type and contains the greatest amount of anoxic water on the Planet. The presence of its anoxic zone has had a drastic influence on its chemical conditions and biota. The formation of its quasi-permanent chemocline is the consequence of a constant inflow of saline Mediterranean water from the Sea of Marmara through the Bosporus strait. These waters are spreading within the deep strata of its basin, while the salinity in its upper layer is freshened by river water and by inflow from the Sea of Azov... The specific features of the Black Sea and its great economic importance stimulated intensive investigations, which began in the late 18th century. By now it is one of the best studied enclosed seas. In spite of the existence of a voluminous literature, and maybe because of it, there is a growing need for a modern monographic book, which opens the possibility to navigate around the enormous scientific material and its controversies. Over 90% has been published in Russian or Romanian languages, practically inaccessible to the Western scientific communities. This monograph presents basic scientific knowledge on all aspects of the ecological state of the Basin, united within a holistic analysis of its ecosystem. The goal of the present book is to cover the demand for a modern monographic work of all knowledge about the Black Sea. The author also wants to demonstrate in this book the power of technological humanity, able to change catastrophically the ecosystem of a whole deep sea in only a couple of decades.

Ellis (Men and Whales) gives a superb account of marine monsters and their attendant myths, sightings, scientific discovery and biology. He describes only the best known and the best documented. He traces the mermaid to the manatee and dugong, Leviathan to the sperm whale, kraken to the giant squid and polyp to the octopus (sharks, however, remain sharks). He examines these monsters in art, literature and film, taking Jules Verne and Victor Hugo to task for their ignorance of biology, hysterical fantasy and unmitigated malice. Herman Melville, Arthur C. Clarke and Peter Benchley get better ratings. Of all the sighted monsters, only the giant squid (Architeuthis) retains its mythological and cryptozoological status, for its very existence is shrouded in mystery. Sharks have had a bad reputation throughout history, but until Jaws (1974) they did not figure prominently in literature. At the end of this engaging book, Ellis confesses to skepticism: "monsters, if they exist, have more to fear from us than we do from them.

Preparing it we faced certain difficulties. The thing is that this encyclopedia is a monument to the sea that is disappearing during our lifetime. The world community considers the situation with the Aral Sea and all changes that occurred in its whereabouts in the recent decades as one of the most serious, if not disastrous anthropogenic environmental crises of the 20th century. Before 1960, this was a water-abundant sea-lake that was fourth among world lakes after the Caspian Sea (USSR, Iran), the Great Lakes (USA, Canada) and Victoria Lake (Africa). This was a real ‘‘pearl’’ among the sands of the largest deserts, the Karakums and the Kyzylkums. Navigation between the sea ports Muinak and Aralsk and fisheries famous for the Aral breams, barbells, sturgeons, shemaya, and others were developed here. One could find beautiful recreational zones and beaches here. The deltas of the Amudarya, the major river of Central Asia, and the Syrdarya bringing their waters into the Aral Sea were famous for their biodiversity, fishery, muskrat rearing, reed prod- tion. The local population found occupations related to the water infrastructure.
