Book excerpt: A powerful and impassioned historical account of the largest successful revolt by enslaved people in history: the Haitian Revolution of 1791–1803 “One of the seminal texts about the history of slavery and abolition.... Provocative and empowering.” —The New York Times Book Review The Black Jacobins, by Trinidadian historian C. L. R. James, was the first major analysis of the uprising that began in the wake of the storming of the Bastille in France and became the model for liberation movements from Africa to Cuba. It is the story of the French colony of San Domingo, a place where the brutality of plantation owners toward enslaved people was horrifyingly severe. And it is the story of a charismatic and barely literate enslaved person named Toussaint L’Ouverture, who successfully led the Black people of San Domingo against successive invasions by overwhelming French, Spanish, and English forces—and in the process helped form the first independent post-colonial nation in the Caribbean. With a new introduction (2023) by Professor David Scott.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This political guide helps us understand why the federal government is designed as it is and how it can be fixed. Everybody proclaims disgust with the political system, yet the system continues to get more disgusting. Is the hard–nosed partisanship in politics today the result of a flaw in the design of our system of government? Did our forefathers overlook something important when they were writing the Constitution? In A Broken Sausage Grinder, author Hank Thomas explains the basic components of the government in order to provide insight as to why it functions as it does. From the diverse settlements and colonial experiences to the development of and the motivation for our demand for freedom and self–determination, this study looks at what our founding fathers were attempting to create as the United States of America was being formed. It studies the variety of influences that have molded our political system over the years, and it presents conclusions about what is wrong with our system of government and how it can be fixed. John Senger of Clarion Foreword Reviews gave this book five stars and said, "Much like Madison, Hamilton, and John Jay, the author is consistently reasoned and moderate in his arguments for restraint in the political forum. In fact, he concludes: ‘Our problem today stems from a loss of respect for the beliefs and ideologies of other Americans.'" Kirkus Reviews said, "Thomas finally attempts to provide answers to the problems America faces, with such diverse advice as allowing only registered voters to make campaign contributions and stressing compromise over mere minority rule. Thomas' work is a compelling review of American political history in an easy–to–read form; a comprehensive set of appendices also aids the reader." Designed as a tool to facilitate discussion, A Broken Sausage Grinder communicates the idea that "we the people" form the foundation for our government; if it isn't working as we intended, "we the people" have the responsibility to fix it. Thank you for joining this important American conversation.

Book excerpt: A groundbreaking history of the Black Joke, the most famous member of the British Royal Navy’s anti-slavery squadron, and the long fight to end the transatlantic slave trade. The most feared ship in Britain’s West Africa Squadron, His Majesty’s brig Black Joke was one of a handful of ships tasked with patrolling the western coast of Africa in an effort to end hundreds of years of global slave trading. Sailing after the spectacular fall of Napoleon in France, yet before the rise of Queen Victoria’s England, Black Joke was first a slaving vessel itself, and one with a lightning-fast reputation; only a lucky capture in 1827 allowed it to be repurposed by the Royal Navy to catch its former compatriots. Over the next five years, the ship’s diverse crew and dedicated commanders would capture more ships and liberate more enslaved people than any other in the Squadron. Now, author A.E. Rooks chronicles the adventures on this ship and its crew in a brilliant, lively narrative of the history of Britain’s suppression efforts. As Britain slowly attempted to snuff out the transatlantic slave trade by way of treaty and negotiation, enforcing these policies fell to the Black Joke and those that sailed with it as they battled slavers, weather disasters, and interpersonal drama among captains and crew that reverberated across oceans. In this history of the daring feats of a single ship, the abolition of the international slave trade is revealed as an inexplicably extended exercise involving tense negotiations between many national powers, both colonizers and formerly colonized, that would stretch on for decades longer than it should have. Harrowing and heartbreaking, The Black Joke is a crucial and deeply compelling work of history, both as a reckoning with slavery and abolition and as a lesson about the power of political will—or the lack thereof.

Book excerpt: Renewable energies such as solar, hydro or wind power are abundant in principle but subject to strong fluctuations. Therefore, development of new technologies for storage of these renewable energies is of special interest. Electrochemical technologies are ideal candidates for the use of excess current; consequently, an increased electrification of chemical processes is expected. In this respect, there are different pathways to utilize excess current electrochemically. Perhaps the most accepted and discussed solutions involve intermediate energy storage in either chemical energy carriers (such as hydrogen via water electrolysis) or electrochemical energy storage devices (like batteries). Additionally, excess current can put to other uses, such for solutions to environmental issues or for construction purposes, rather than being stored for later use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do "black pride" and "black prejudice" come hand in hand? Does taking pride in being black encourage the rejection of a common bond with other Americans? In this groundbreaking study, two leading social scientists mount a challenge to those who would answer "yes." Paul Sniderman and Thomas Piazza probe these questions in the only way possible--asking black Americans themselves to share their thoughts about each other, America, and other Americans. Writing in a strikingly transparent style, they open a new window on the ideas and values of real individuals who make up the black community in America today. Contrary to the rhetoric of some black leaders, Sniderman and Piazza show that African Americans overwhelmingly reject racial separatism and embrace a common framework, culture, and identity with other Americans. Although the authors find that levels of anti-Semitism are notably higher among black Americans than among white Americans, they demonstrate that taking pride in being black does not encourage blacks to be more suspicious or intolerant of others who are not black. The higher levels of anti-Semitism are instead associated with a gallery of oversimplified and accusatory ideas, including a popularized Afrocentrism and charges of vast conspiracies, that have won substantial support in the black community. Readers of this book will come away with an understanding of how African Americans, while insistent on winning racial justice, are deeply committed to the values of the American ethos and their identity as Americans.

Book excerpt: Discharge is the comic story of four gay sailors being released from the Navy in 1995. While stationed in Western Australia, Hospital Corpsman Mickey Matlin, the married father of two young children, is discovered in an intimate situation with 19-year-old Seaman Apprentice Eddie Vasquez. Journalist Jon Gates is dumped by the base dentist at the same time, and in a somewhat dramatic fashion, he informs the Legal Officer he is gay and requests a release from the Navy ASAP. No hard feelings. He simply wants to be free of the military in the same way Elizabeth Taylor wanted to be rid of Eddie Fisher after she met Richard Burton. Arrangements are made for the sailors to journey to Treasure Island, off the coast of San Francisco. In Perth, they meet up with Machinists Mate Lawrence Watts who is also en route to the states for a medical discharge. Their travels take them through New Zealand, Sidney, and Honolulu. They consider the trip a last fling of sorts that is, until they reach Treasure Island where they are tossed into a daytime jail disciplinary barracks, which allows them evening liberty in San Francisco. There is screaming and some sex, as each man struggles to construct a new life outside of the military. Young Vasquez deals with coming out issues. Watts learns to accept his HIV status, and Mickey Matlin must confront his wife, who joins them in San Francisco from their rural Illinois home. Their stories are related through letters, journal entries, and other fairy tales that document their military discharges.
