Turn where you will or may and history does not furnish a parallel to the case in hand. The destruction of the comer-stone of slavery in 1863 was the beginning of the marvelous temporal prosperity of this nation, that is, the American people. While slavery existed in the several States, the nation, like a partly starved giant, under an appalling cloud, manifested signs of paralysis, which left it in the awful throes of death, as it were. And smarting under the oft-repeated stings of a deep remorse of a relentless con science, it eked out an existence which reflected no glory, but unmeasured disgrace upon the deflected ethics of its government, until the emancipation of the slaves was consummated. Before it loses its intense burning interest for students of mankind, long before the black man and the white man live together in harmony on a basis mutually acceptable, many more books will be written. The keen intellect and tender conscience of the Twentieth Century both imperatively demand that the illogical and unethical attitude in which the races face each other in the Southern States and in South Africa shall be changed for one that we can justify, and with which the black man shall be satisfied. Our question is one phase of the greater problem of race and colour which touches all the European nations, and nearly every backward race and tribe throughout the Wide world. The problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the colour line. So far as I know only two men intimately acquainted by personal experience and residence in other countries in which black and white come together, have visited the Southern States and written their experiences thereon. One of these is Sir H. H. Johnston, who knows many parts of Africa with a knowledge that is in some respects unique. The other is Mr. W. P. Livingstone, author of Black Jamaica, who writes on the North American Negro in The Race Conflict, and who has a practical acquaintance with the race in Jamaica. Joseph Julius Jackson, D.D. was an African-American preacher and head of the Baptist Aged Ministers' Home and Theological Seminary, in Bellefontaine, Ohio. In 1921 after considerable expense and with much labor and research he published the book "The History of the Black Man" which covers an authentic collection of historical information on the early civilization of the descendants of Ham, the son of Noah: history of the Black kingdoms of Ghana, Melle, Songhay and Hansas, and the early American Negro. In introducing his book Jackson notes that "it is very essential that every race should possess a correct knowledge of its own past history. The masses of the American negro have been deprived of the opportunity of obtaining an adequate knowledge of the past history of the black man. The average historian has not considered the ancient history of the black man of sufficient importance to claim his attention. Even Mr. Myers would have the students of his general history believe that the black man has always been a hewer of wood and a drawer of water. "A large majority of the men of letters of our own people who are very proficient in ancient, medieval and modern history of Greece, Rome, and even China, Japan, and other European and Asiatic countries, know very little of the history of their own people. A lack of historical knowledge of ourselves has been the means of lessening of our race pride. A better knowledge of the contribution of the black man to civilization will cause us to have a better opinion of ourselves. "At considerable expense and with much labor and research, the writer has succeeded in collecting what he considers a great deal of valuable information, which he has placed in this little book and given to the public at a cost within the reach of everyone who desires valuable information upon the past and present history of the black man. A brief reference will be made to the origin of the race, the rise of the Ethiopian and Egypt, and the early influence of African civilization upon the ancient history of the world. Considerable space will be given to the black kingdoms of Soudan ... Ghana, Melle, Songhay and Hansas."
