Book Synopsis The Book of Barkley by : L. B. Johnson
Download or read book The Book of Barkley written by L. B. Johnson and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L.B. Johnson knew how to get things done. She had been immersed in a world of complex puzzles, and tangled story lines of physical and governmental laws. She was quite sure she was up to the task of raising a black Labrador retriever puppy. His name was Barkley, and in being himself, he led his owner down a path of joyful discovery, loving frustration, and self-sacrifice. Their journey together will speak volumes to anyone who has ever had a beloved animal as a heart’s companion…from the gentle nuzzles that healed in moments of crisis, to the saintly patience needed to deal with a small pink ball with feet, named “Mr. Squeaky,” who interrupted many hours of sleep. It is the story of rambunctious trespasses such as “the bacon incident,” and the loving trust that bound a woman and her dog together in unspoken understanding. The Book of Barkley is a tribute and memoir that will resonate with everyone who has reached out unthinking to pet a beloved animal…only to remember that a beloved friend is no longer present. Honest, transcendent, and beautifully written, The Book of Barkley is a love story that will enrich every animal lover’s library.
Book Synopsis George Cartwright's The Labrador Companion by : Marianne P. Stopp
Download or read book George Cartwright's The Labrador Companion written by Marianne P. Stopp and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New manuscripts directly related to Canada’s history rarely come to light. The Labrador Companion, written in 1810 by Captain George Cartwright (1739-1819), and discovered in 2013, is a fascinating and unusual find because of its level of detail, its setting in a hardly studied part of Britain’s fur-trade empire, and because it is a personal account rather than a trade outfit ledger or government document. This annotated edition transcribes The Labrador Companion in full. Cartwright documented the everyday work of Labrador’s particular kind of fur-trade life based on his experiences operating a series of merchant stations in southern Labrador between 1770 and 1786. Although his focus is firmly on instruction in the manifold ways of capturing animals, he also provides rare glimpses of Innu and Inuit life as well as of housekeeping and gardening. The Labrador Companion includes a lengthy description of Labrador’s fauna – of land, sea, and air – that counts among Canada’s earliest natural history writing based on first-hand observation. A revealing account of fur-trade-era technology, methods, and materials, conveyed through one man’s acquired knowledge and skills, The Labrador Companion gives a close-to-the-ground picture of the resource industries that were at the heart of British, and French, colonial presence in the Canadian northeast.

Book Synopsis Labrador Odyssey by : Ronald Rompkey
Download or read book Labrador Odyssey written by Ronald Rompkey and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1999-04 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curwen, a young medical doctor, documented his impressions of the Labrador coast while distributing clothing and supplies as part of Grenfell's "mission." The journal entries are Victorian toned, and offer insights into the politics of the area, conditions of the fishing schooners, the lives of the settlers, the Moravian Brethren, and commentary on his captain, Grenfell, as well as the countryside they encountered. The editor has provided an introduction that places the journal in a historical context, and has added annotations, and official letters and reports written by Grenfell to supplement Curwen's account. Interesting photographs taken by the doctor accompany the text. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
Book Synopsis Mammals of Ungava and Labrador by : Scott A. Heyes
Download or read book Mammals of Ungava and Labrador written by Scott A. Heyes and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1882 the Smithsonian Institution Arctic scientist, Lucien McShan Turner, traveled to the Ungava District that encompasses Northern Quebec and Labrador. There he spent 20 months as part of a mission to record meteorological data for an International Polar Year research program. While stationed at the Hudson's Bay Company Trading Post of Fort Chimo in Ungava Bay, now the Inuit community of Kuujjuaq, he soon tired of his primary task and expanded his duties to a study of the natural history and ethnography of the Aboriginal peoples of the region. His ethnography of the Inuit and Innu people was published in 1894, but his substantial writings on natural history never made it to print. Presented here for the first time is the natural history material that Lucien M. Turner wrote on mammals of the Ungava and Labrador regions. His writings provide a glimpse of the habits and types of mammals that roamed Ungava 125 years ago in what was an unknown frontier to non-Inuit and non-Innu people.
