Book excerpt: Fig and Starlight have a dilemma: They have a good idea that the sponsor of the birthday bash is headed for trouble; he threatens to expose everyone's dirty secrets. Someone may do anything, including murder, to keep him from exposing secrets. Fig's husband David and Starlight's boyfriend, police officer Kino, also have a dilemma: How to prevent the women from putting themselves in grave danger in their efforts at amateur detecting. The story follows the group to some of the most beautiful sights of Kauai, including the historic and beautiful Maha'ulepu trail, with treacherous rock formations that convince Fig that Kauai can be dangerous as well as beautiful. Fig and Starlight see whales, beautiful Wailua Falls, and visit the tourist sites and hidden treasures of Kauai. As the week progresses, the danger becomes more imminent, as the two women watch helplessly as the situation deteriorates. Murder seems the inevitable result, until they become so entrenched in the mystery that their own lives are endangered.

Book excerpt: George, an aging sheriff in a small Midwestern village, has a lot on his mind: the mayor has shown him a rather crudely note with a very threatening theme. The note implies that the people who the mayor loves are going to be killed first, then the mayor herself will be murdered. George shows the note to his brother, Peter while they are fishing in Minnesota. Peter, a gifted high school literature instructor, has his own problems: his fourteen year old daughter Deborah, has been acting very strange as of late. George meets with the mayor just before her father is brutally murdered in his bed. Now George is in a race to prevent the murders of others who are close to the mayor. He still finds time to pay attention to his niece Deborah, his brother's daughter, who is going through a crisis of her own. George is puzzled by the bizarre details of the murder, as evidence points to a mentally ill young man who lives in town. Deborah and her father, Peter, become involved in trying to help George, as the mayor becomes more frantic. The story is both dark and humorous, as the author explores family relationships, mental illness, murder, tragedy and triumph. The quotations which head each chapter are woven into the story, as Shakespeare, Dickens, Agatha Christie and other writers' ideas become an integral part of the plot and its resolution.

Book excerpt: A body was discovered at the zoo in Lincoln Park on Chicago's upscale north side. The body was covered in blood, lying in the outside enclosure of one of the lion's cages. Next to the body, the lion was sleeping peacefully. Detectives Nikos Papakostis and Kaitlin Doyle, assigned to the case, discover a note on the body stating that the man had been killed because his father had broken the law. As Nikos and Kaitlin investigate further, they find that the 'law' the killer referred to is an Old Testament law, directing that the sins of the father would result in punishment of the sons, to the third and fourth generations Kaitlin reasoned that the current murder may not have been the only crime committed by the Old Testament killer, and indeed, in her research of the police files, she finds another crime committed many years earlier: the murder of a very talented adolescent, who was killed because his father had a gay relationship. The killer, who called himself 'Moses' left a note explaining that the son must die due to the sins of his father. The two detectives find that their every move seems to be anticipated by the killer, who has now threatened to strike again. They soon realize that they also may be targeted by the serial killer, who has increased his activity into a murderous frenzy. Nikos and Kaitlin do a great deal of their case work after hours at the Mykonos restaurant, owned by Nikos' uncle George. George is concerned with finding a mate for Nikos, preferably a nice Greek girl, especially since Kaitlin shows no romantic interest in Nikos. George finally arranges a meeting between Nikos and Roula, a distant cousin of Nikos' from Athens. Nikos feels distracted from trying to solve the crime and avoid the dreaded cousin. The drama of the murders unfold as Nikos is forced to confront his cousin from Greece. The story develops as Kaitlin and Nikos fight a battle against time to try to find the killer before he kills again, finally realizing that they themselves may be targeted to be the next victims of the crazed killer. The book explores the dark regions of a killers mind, the tragedy of his victims, the relationships which develop between the detectives and the other characters of the story. The narrative is filled with dark themes and a great deal of humor. It is a very readable and thought provoking study of religious delusion, solid relationships, failure and triumph, all in the context of believable characters and their interactions with each other. Once you start the book, you will not be able to put it down.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1866 and 1969, an estimated 8,000 individuals—at least 90 percent of whom were Native Hawaiians—were sent to Molokai’s remote Kalaupapa peninsula because they were believed to have leprosy. Unwilling to accept the loss of their families, homes, and citizenship, these individuals ensured they would be accorded their rightful place in history. They left a powerful testimony of their lives in the form of letters, petitions, music, memoirs, and oral history interviews. Kalaupapa combines more than 200 hours of interviews with archival documents, including over 300 letters and petitions written by the earliest residents translated from Hawaiian. It has long been assumed that those sent to Kalaupapa were unconcerned with the world they were forced to leave behind. The present work shows that residents remained actively interested and involved in life beyond Kalaupapa. They petitioned the Hawaii Legislative Assembly in 1874, seeking justice. They fervently supported Queen Liliuokalani and the Hawaiian Kingdom prior to annexation and contributed to the relief effort in Europe following World War I. In 1997 Kalaupapa residents advocated at the United Nations together with people affected by leprosy from around the world. This book presents at long last the story of Kalaupapa as told by its people.

Book excerpt: In The Doomsday Mother, bestselling true crime author John Glatt tells the twisted tale of Lori Vallow, accused of having her two children murdered to start a new life with her new husband, doomsday prepper Chad Daybell. At first, the residents of Kauai Beach Resort took little notice of their new neighbors. The glamorous blonde and her tall husband fit the image of the ritzy gated community. The couple seemed to keep to themselves—until the police knocked on their door with a search warrant. Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell had fled to Hawaii in the midst of being investigated for the disappearance of Lori’s children back in Idaho—Tylee and JJ—who hadn’t been seen alive in five months. For years, Lori Vallow had been devoted to her children and her Mormon faith. But when her path crossed with Chad Daybell, a religious zealot who taught his followers how to prepare for the end-times, the tumultuous relationship transformed her into someone unrecognizable. As authorities searched for Lori’s children, they uncovered more suspicious deaths with links to both Lori and Chad, including the death of Lori’s third and fourth husbands, her brother, and Chad’s wife. In June 2020, the gruesome remains of JJ and Tylee were discovered on Chad’s property, and the newlyweds were arrested and charged with murder. And in a shocking development, horrifying statements revealed that the couple’s fanatical beliefs had convinced them the children had become zombies--a belief that may have led to their deaths. Bestselling author and journalist John Glatt takes readers deeper into the devastating story of Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell in an attempt to unravel the lethal relationship of this doomsday couple.
