Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birth of Democracy Father, being at the other end of the field when the rain came up, was several minutes behind me, thus by the time he arrived we had calmed down from our little fit of gratitude, and Uncle Howard had concealed himself beside one of my mules to surprise him as he had me. However, he did not wait until Father had gotten into the stall, but jumped upon him before he was hardly inside the door. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of Democracy Any inquiry into the course of democratic progress in England would be confessedly imsy and superficial which did not endeavour, however brie y, to indicate the nature of the movement in its earlier stages. Is English democracy of home growth, or does it owe its chief impulse to the cognate movement in France? Was it propelled onwards by a conscious striving after new ideals, or was it merely the result of discontent aroused by material discomforts and unjust laws? Did our Radical reformers claim that they were initiating a new era for humanity at large, or were they content with redressing the ills of the time? To these and similar questions it is hoped that this little work will furnish some reply, not, as a rule, explicitly and in set terms, but rather by means of an unbiassed narrative which will leave the reader free to draw his own conclusions as to the drift of events, the full significance of which cannot as yet be fully realized. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birth of the New Party or Progressive Democracy It has been said that misgovernment in the United States is an incident in the history of commerce. But this is true, not only in the United States but of all government. It is inevitable that after every period of material prosperity there should be a period of accounting and recapitulation in which the people are forced to recover those rights that in the time of general jubilation have been purloined from them. It is no jest that in the times of excitement, certain brainy and unscrupulous men will find themselves in the position of the nimble gentleman who boasted that he would take all the prizes at the county fair. He did; but fortunately the policeman made him put them all back before he got outside the gate. At the beginning of the Victorian Age there was an Attorney General of England, afterwards Lord Chief Justice Campbell, who rose at a public banquet in Edinburgh and with his comfortable dinner warming his imagination, his face beaming in response to the flattering reception, declared that the Chartist movement had passed entirely away. Lord Campbell was the Wickersham of his day. The fatuous blunderer of our own day was no further away from the truth in his Chicago speech than was Lord Campbell in his Edinburgh effort. Within ten days the war for what was called the People's Charter was at its height - and it lasted for ten years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Democracy: Considered as a Party Name and as a Political Organization Republicanism as a party name, and some dark stains upon its history. If so, it is the duty of some patriot to point them out. I shall content myself with exposing and commenting upon Democracy as a party name and organization. And I trust it will be by no means difficult to show that the word used as a party name or title has almost invariably proved to be, in practice, as far from the abstract or popular meaning of the word as the east is from the west, or as darkness is from light. It, then, this charge can be established from the history of Democracy, such a party ought not to exist, and cannot exist without endangering free institutions and the representative form of government. But if the charge be not well founded, or if it will apply as well to any other party or party name, then the benefits to arise from its investigation should stimulate patriots to enter upon the work. From such an investigation would likely come a truer estimation and correction of party abuses, and a higher elevation and purification of the means for maintaining free government and equal rights, and consequently greater security and safety for the people. But of all this the reader must judge as we proceed with these historical sketches. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Founded in 1791 with Thomas Jefferson as its chief spon sor, it attracted immediately the enthusiastic and affection ate support of the masses of the people, who were determined that the institutions and government of the United States should have the character of a democracy and not an aristocratic system based upon the superior presump tions and pretensions of a few. Its development was so rapid that at the national elections of 1792 it secured control of the popular branch of Congress and cast 55 of the total 132 Electoral votes for President and vice-president. In 1796 it lacked but two votesxof the number required to decide the result in the 'electoral College; and in 1800 it won a triumphant victory, electing the President and Vice President and also a marked majority of the members of each house of Congress. Thus established as the ruling power of the nation, it was so maintained by the people, nearly always by overwhelming majorities, for an unbroken period of forty years, when it experienced a temporary reverse without, however, any abatement of its vitality or deviation from its original principles or character. Those principles and that character, distinguishing it as the party of the masses of the people in composition, instincts, action, and general acceptation, it has since preserved through all the vicissitudes of its fortunes. Daniel Ziblatt revisits this timely and classic question in a wide-ranging historical narrative that traces the evolution of modern political democracy in Europe from its modest beginnings in 1830s Britain to Adolf Hitler's 1933 seizure of power in Weimar Germany. Based on rich historical and quantitative evidence, the book offers a major reinterpretation of European history and the question of how stable political democracy is achieved. The barriers to inclusive political rule, Ziblatt finds, were not inevitably overcome by unstoppable tides of socioeconomic change, a simple triumph of a growing middle class, or even by working class collective action. Instead, political democracy's fate surprisingly hinged on how conservative political parties - the historical defenders of power, wealth, and privilege - recast themselves and coped with the rise of their own radical right. With striking modern parallels, the book has vital implications for today's new and old democracies under siege.

At that time most men in this country were farmers. There were no factories, no railways, no cities of any considerable size. Practically all the people of the colonies were Of one race and language. None were very rich and none very poor. They were separated from Europe by a voyage of months. The great tasks of men and women Were those of the pioneer: first, to settle the wilderness, cut the forests, plant and harvest; and second, to establish homes, schools, churches, laws, and government. Their new nation was conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
