Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Cheshire There is no need nowadays to apologise for the publication of a County Fauna. The value of local lists to naturalists is so generally recognised, that it is a matter of surprise that no comprehensive account of the Cheshire Birds has hitherto been compiled. As no one has come forward to fill up the gap, and place Cheshire on a level with neighbouring counties in this respect, we venture to submit this work to the public. Our object has been to critically consider the lists of previous authors, who have dealt with portions of the county only, and the records which have appeared from time to time in magazines and other publications. We have been able to sup plement these with information communicated to us by many correspondents, and with matter from our own notebooks. We have purposely omitted technical descriptions of plumage, and general observations on habits, which may be found in any reliable textbook, and have endeavoured to express ourselves as concisely and in as simple language as possible. RED-FOOTED FALCON. Falco Vespertinus, Linnaeus. This rare Falcon has only been obtained once in Cheshire. An adult female was shot by the gamekeeper of Mr. R. H. Greg in May 1873, at Styal, near Wilmslow.1 MERLIN. Falco.esalon, Tunstall. Many of the shepherds and gamekeepers in Longdendale can remember the time when this beautiful little Falcon was fairly common; and although its numbers have greatly decreased, owing to the misguided zeal of the latter, a few pairs still nest annually amongst the heather, or on the crags in some of the more lonely cloughs. In the Grosvenor Museum, Chester, are four young birds in down, which Oldham obtained alive on June 18th, 1894, from a keeper who had taken them from a bare spot on a ledge of rock near the head of Crowden Brook. The feathers of the wings and tail hardly showed through the down; but the little creatures, already exhibiting the gameness and ferocity of their kind, threw themselves on their backs when handled, showing fight with beak and talons. We have observed the same characteristic in even younger birds which we have found in the disused nests of Carrion Crows, on the cliffs of the Anglesea coast. Possibly an odd pair of Merlins may succeed in rearing their young on the moors east of Macclesfield, as they 1 V. Book excerpt: "Cheshire and Wirral provides a wide range of habitats for birds, from the internationally important estuaries of the Dee and Mersey in the west to the high moors of the Peak District National Park in the east. During 2004 to 2007 more than 350 volunteers spent over 50,000 hours surveying each 2x2 km tetrad in Cheshire and Wirral, recording every bird species in the breeding season and in winter. This Atlas reveals dramatic changes since the county's first breeding bird Atlas of 1978-84, and also for the first time shows the detailed distribution of the wintering species." "Illustrated with 300 pictures by local photographers and artists, this colour Atlas provides full accounts of 186 species, with briefer treatments for a further 31. More than 500 maps show the birds' distribution in the two seasons as well as the difference between seasons and the spectacular gains and losses in breeding status over the last twenty years. For the first time at county level, this Atlas also includes figures for the breeding populations of 65 of the most numerous species, 35 of which also feature abundance maps. In a further innovation for a project of this nature, observers recorded details of the birds' habitats, greatly increasing its overall conservation value."--BOOK JACKET.

Hoping to trade London's damp alleyways for the warmth of ye olde Cheshire Cheese Inn, Skilley strikes a bargain with Pip, an erudite mouse. Skilley will protect the mice who live at the inn, and in turn, the mice will provide Skilley with the thing he desires most. But when Skilley and Pip are drawn into a crisis of monumental proportions, their new friendship is pushed to its limits. The escalating crisis threatens the peace not only of the Cheshire Cheese Inn but the entire British Monarchy! New York Times best-selling author Carmen Agra Deedy and coauthor Randall Wright collaborate on this compelling story set in Victorian England. With the artwork of award-winning illustrator Barry Moser, The Cheshire Cheese Cat is filled with charming characters and strong themes of friendship and loyalty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative handbook, part of the Helm Identification Guides series, looks in detail at the world's 170 species of robins and chats. This large family of small passerines was formerly considered to be part of the thrush family (Turdidae), but is now usually treated as a separate family, Muscicapidae, together with the Old World flycatchers. The vast majority of species are Eurasian or African, with only a handful of species straying into the New World or Australasia. The Australian Robins, although superficially similar, have long been regarded as a separate family. Robins and chats are a diverse family comprising both highly colourful and visible species, such as the robin-chats of Africa, as well as some of the most skulking and elusive birds, such as the shortwings of Asia. Many chats, such as the well-known Nightingale, are renowned songsters, and a good number are highly sought-after by world listers for their extreme rarity or simply because they are hard to see. This book discusses the identification and habits of these birds on a species-by-species basis, bringing together the very latest research with accurate range maps, more than 600 stunning colour photographs that illustrate age and racial plumage differences, and 64 superb colour plates by the internationally renowned artist, Chris Rose. This authoritative and sumptuous book will be an essential purchase for all chat enthusiasts, and will become the standard reference on the subject for many years to come.
