This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biology of the Sea-Shore While the ecological aspect of the sea-shore has attracted a great number of research workers, from the point of view of teaching it would not seem to have received an equivalent amount of attention. It cannot be doubted that if a student confines himself, when on the sea-shore, purely to collecting and labelling species he is not obtaining a tithe of the benefit that his visit is capable of affording him. Consequently in planning this work, one of our chief ambitions has been to stimulate a wider interest on the part of the student by depicting for him something of the wonderfully vigorous and many-sided nature of the struggle for existence between tide-marks, and by drawing his attention to some of the innumerable problems connected with shore animals which still await investigation. We have had no wish to treat our subject exhaustively. For the most part we have confined ourselves to those British species with which we have first-hand acquaintance. To have foregone, however, all mention of foreign and, in particular, of tropical forms, would be to have excluded phenomena of the very greatest interest to our theme. It frequently happens, for instance, that a habit or an associa tion which is only slightly developed on our own shores has been brought to a high degree of specialisation elsewhere, especially in warmer seas. Consequently, we have not hesitated to give cases of this kind as large a measure of our attention as space allowed. For analogous reasons, while our main concern is with species occurring between tide marks, we have not infrequently extended our survey to include forms which more properly belong to the waters beyond the Laminarian zone. Book Synopsis A Student's Guide to the Seashore by : J. D. Fish

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students and naturalists are not only interested in which species live on the seashore but also about their biology. How does a particular species reproduce? What is its life cycle? A Student's Guide to the Seashore is a unique, concise, illustrated guide to both the biology and identification of over 600 common and widespread shore animals and plants. In this new edition, for the first time, simple keys are included to allow accurate identification, and each species is beautifully illustrated by the author's line drawings. Together with concise summaries of diagnostic features, and notes on biology, this is the first comprehensive guide to the seashore giving a fascinating insight into the diversity and complexity of life on the shore. An extensive glossary of scientific terms and complete bibliography ensure that this book will be the premier biological text and identification guide for many years to come.
Book Synopsis A Student’s Guide to the Seashore by : J.D. Fish
Download or read book A Student’s Guide to the Seashore written by J.D. Fish and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At one time or another, we have all been drawn by the fascination of the seashore. For the holiday maker, the relaxing day by the sea often turns out to be a most rewarding foray among rock pools and dense canopies of seaweed; for naturalists and students, the shore is one of the most challenging habitats. Whatever our interests and expertise, one of our first objectives when faced with the diversity of plant and animal life on the shore is to name the individual specimens and we quickly learn that this can be a difficult, though rewarding, occupation. Once an organism has been identified, a number of questions naturally follow. What is its life-cycle? How does it feed and reproduce? How long does it live? The answers to such questions give an insight into the lives of the plants and animals of the shore and are one of the first steps in an understand ing of the complexity of the shore environment. However, the information required to answer such questions is not always easily accessible and even when it is known it is often scattered in various books and research journals making it difficult and time consuming to find. Although a variety of identification keys and guides is available, some designed for the specialist, others for the amateur, such texts generally give little, if any, information on the biology of the organisms.
