Book excerpt: Field experiments throughout Northern Alberta established picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid) as an excellent herbicide for the control of Canada thistle ( Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop.). Rates of 8 to 12 oz/A were sufficient to consistently reduce thistle stands under all conditions. Preplant herbicide treatments were tolerated by creeping red fescue ( Festuca rubra L.) and timothy ( Phleum pratense L.) if one growing season elapsed between treatments and planting of the grasses. Seeding of the grasses three weeks following herbicide application resulted in reduced grass stands and dry matter production in several instances. Seedling stands of creeping red fescue treated at the 1- to 5-tiller stage grew and developed better where thistle control was provided by single applications of picloram at 4,8, and 12 oz/A or dicamba at 24 oz/A. Fertile tiller production was increased substantially in plants selected from plots treated in the field with 4 and 12 oz/A of picloram at the 3- to 5-tiller stage, and transferred to a growth chamber. Seed production of timothy was not affected by 2 to 12 oz/A of picloram when applied at several growth stages. Dicamba and 2,4-D treatments were tolerated best at the post-flowering stage of growth. Creeping red fescue seed production was reduced by most herbicide treatments applied at 10 per cent anthesis in 1969. Plants receiving 8 and 12 oz/A of picloram in 1969 were prostrate and seed head numbers were reduced in 1970. In no instance did herbicide treatment result in more than a 9.4 per cent reduction in percentage germination of the seed from either grass species when compared to the untreated check. Dicamba applied on timothy two weeks after the peak flowering period did not significantly reduce the seed germination but seedlings produced were prostrate and bent. Picloram at 2 oz/A had no effect on seed germination irrespective of the growth stage of the plants at treatment time. In greenhouse experiments with picloram and dicamba-treated soil, creeping red fescue germinated and emerged more readily than did timothy. Surviving timothy plants grew and developed more readily, however, than did creeping red fescue plants. Dissipation of dicamba under field conditions was complete by the end of one growing season. Picloram soil residues which were phytotoxic to cucumbers were detected at all locations and at most rates of application after more than one growing season had elapsed. Dissipation of picloram was greatest at the St. Albert plot and this was attributed to the high organic matter content of the soil. The use of picloram or dicamba for thistle control in grass seed fields is feasible. Picloram applied to actively growing thistles in the bud stage on a spot application basis and prior to seeding at rates of 4 to 8 oz/A followed three to four weeks later by intensive cultivation is recommended. Thistle regrowth can be treated when seedling grasses are past the three to four-leaf stage with a mixture of 4 oz/A of dicamba and 8 oz/A of MCPA amine or 2,4-D amine.

Scop.) is an aggressive, introduced creeping perennial weed that flourishes in a wide variety of environments. Its deep, creeping root system and colony forming tendencies make it one of the most difficult weeds to control. A strategy that incorporates a better understanding of the biology of Canada thistle into the development of an integrated management plan that includes herbicides and biological control could help reduce the dispersal and impact of this species. The objectives of this work were to: 1) determine how Canada thistle emergence and growth are affected by changes in root size, biomass, burial depth, and soil moisture and 2) compare single and joint impacts of herbicides and biological control agents on Canada thistle growth. Objective 1 was carried out in a greenhouse and in field conditions. To monitor Canada thistle emergence and growth responses, a completely randomized factorial design was used in the greenhouse, and a randomized complete block design was used in the field. Models were developed to predict emergence and growth patterns based on available water, burial depth, and various root metrics. For the exception of available water, the same predictors were used in field conditions to predict Canada thistle emergence and growth. The variables that were manipulated were able to significantly predict the responses measured, and we concluded that available water, root burial depth, and root weight, length, diameter, and volume are indicators of emergence likelihood, emergence time, shoot and root growth, and shoot number. Objective 2 was carried out in greenhouses and field settings. Three herbicides were evaluated with and without insects to determine reduction in Canada thistle root and shoot biomass in the greenhouse. One herbicide was also used at a low rate and evaluated singly and in combination with a stem-boring weevil (Hadroplontus litura (F.)) and a pathogen (Pseudomonas syringae pv. tagetis) to determine effect on Canada thistle response in the greenhouse and field. We failed to reject our null hypothesis of additivity between control agents, and concluded that integrating individual control methods yields greater Canada thistle control than any singular method.

Book excerpt: Classical biological control of weeds has been used almost 50 years to control Cirsium arvense (Canada thistle) in the United States. However, few field studies have assessed the efficacy of approved biological control agents, a stem-galling fly Urophora cardui and stem-mining weevil Hadroplontus litura. We reviewed literature on C. arvense control, and between 2008 and 2012, monitored release transects of U. cardui, H. litura, both species, or no insects released at C. arvense infestations across the western United States. At each study transect (n = 87), we measured U. cardui parasitism pressure, biological control agent establishment and abundance, vegetation cover, C. arvense density, and abiotic variables; each as potential factors in inter-annual C. arvense density fluctuation. We found that U. cardui galls are attacked by five parasitoid species at low rates and that C. arvense infestations are negatively affected by perennial grass competition and not by biological control agent herbivory.

Book excerpt: "The success of biological weed control programs has been limited by a lack of understanding of the stress physiology of insect damage and pathogen development. This case study with the perennial weed, Cirsium arvense, (L.) Scop. evaluated the stress of five natural enemies. Attack by a seed head predator, Orellia ruficauda (F.) caused about 21.5% predation and may reduce seed dispersal. The stress of stem gall formation (Urophora cardui (L.)) is greatest when the gall occurs on young plants and on the mainshoot and defoliation simulation (Cassida rubiginosa Muller) is most effective at high levels on young plants. In nature, however, the latter two natural enemies are not synchronized with these susceptible stages, thereby reducing their effectiveness. Although Cleonus piger Scop., a root crown inhabitant, can result in plant death, regeneration of damaged vascular tissue can occur. Plants which emerge systemically infected with Puccinia punctiformis (Str.) Rohl. (rust) rarely survive the season. A matrix model simulating the effects on Canada thistle population dynamics by the natural enemies was applied." --

Book excerpt: This guide focuses on the most problematic weeds in eastern North America for which there are at least some biocontrol agents established and/or available. Multiple photos and descriptions of each weed included in this guide emphasize key identification traits and plant ecology. For each weed included in this guide, all biocontrol agents released or currently found in North America are described individually. Photos highlighting key identification features and damage are included. The release history, current status, and recommended use of each biocontrol agent are described in detail. Recommendations and current impact often vary between the US and Canada, therefore, the information is presented separately. Includes international code of best practices for classical biological control of weeds.
