Book excerpt: Bilbury Chronicles is the first of a series of books (all available on Amazon as Ebooks) describing the adventures (and misadventures) of a young doctor who enters general practice as an assistant to an elderly and rather eccentric doctor in Devon, England. When he arrives in Bilbury, a small village on the edge of Exmoor where central heating is a log fire in the middle of the room and where doors are never locked, the young doctor doesn't realise how much he has to learn. But he soon finds the extent of his ignorance when he meets his patients. There is Anne Thwaites who gives birth in the middle of a field and local rogue Thumper Robinson who knows a good many tricks that aren't in any textbooks. And there is Mike Trickle, a TV show host, who causes great excitement when he buys a house in the village. The young doctor's employer is elderly Dr Brownlow who lives in a house that looks like a castle, drives an old Rolls Royce and patches his stethoscope with a bicycle inner tube repair kit. The local pub, the Duck and Puddle, is run by Frank, the inebriate landlord, and the village shop is run by Peter who also drives the local taxi, delivers the mail and acts as the local undertaker. There is Miss Johnson, the receptionist with a look that can curdle milk; Mrs Wilson, the buxom district nurse and Len, her husband who is the local policeman with an embarrassing secret. And there is Patsy. The author of the Bilbury series of books, Dr Vernon Coleman, is a qualified doctor who has written over 100 books which have sold more than two million copies in hardback and paperback in the UK and been translated into 24 languages. Many of his books have been bestsellers. His novel Mrs Caldicot's Cabbage War has been turned into an award winning movie and his medical books include Bodypower and How To Stop Your Doctor Killing You - both of which have been huge international bestsellers. Dr Coleman has written columns for many of the world's leading newspapers and magazines and has presented hundreds of television and radio programmes. What the papers say about Vernon Coleman and his books: The tales he tells are truly uplifting and thought-provoking. Book excerpt: Bilbury Country is the fourth book in The Young Country Doctor series by Dr Vernon Coleman. The books are all set in the village of Bilbury in the English county of Devon. It's the 1970s and the village is old-fashioned and, in many ways, cut off from the world. Bilbury Country includes the usual cast of villagers - as well as the doctor and his wife.`The fourth book in the series describes what happens to Bilbury and its villagers when a newspaper story turns a trickle of visitors into a flood. Full of charm and humour.' - News & StarThe Bilbury books have attracted great reviews and thousands of fans around the world. `You can sniff the clean Devon air and recognise characters indigenous to any West Country village. Dr Coleman harnesses the essence of village life with a wealth of characters and strings them along on a tide of gentle humour.' Western Morning News`A cornupcopia of colourful characters helps to weave a rich tapestry of village life subtly tempered with the gentle humour which hallmarks this author's work. Set in the 1970s, the mixture of rural beauty, human nature and the odd whisper of nostalgia combine to make this book a real delight.' Western Gazette`Coleman handles the humour with the assured touch that comes from having already written a string of successful titles (and) manages to retain a heartwarming affection for his fellow man.' - Yorkshire Evening Post`For sheer relaxing pleasure here's another witty tale from the doctor whose prolific writings are so well known to many of us.' Bookshelf (BBC)`Captures the essence of old fashioned village life where you never needed to lock your door.' - Western Evening Herald`A pleasure to read from cover to cover.' - Kentish ExpressThe author of the Bilbury books, Vernon Coleman, is a bestselling writer whose books have sold over two million hardback and paperback copies in the UK alone and been translated into 24 languages. Trained as a doctor, Dr Coleman is still a registered GP, though he has earned his living as an author for many years now. He has written over 100 books. These include Mrs Caldicot's Cabbage War (which has been turned into an award winning film), Mr Henry Mulligan and Paris in My Springtime. His medical books include Bodypower and How to Stop Your Doctor Killing You.Vernon Coleman has written columns and articles for many of the world's leading newspapers and magazines and has presented hundreds of programmes on radio and television. What the papers say: Vernon Coleman writes brilliant books - The Good Book GuideCompulsive reading - The GuardianBritain's leading medical author - The StarBritain's leading health care campaigner - The SunBrilliant - The PeopleA godsend - Daily TelegraphSuperstar - Independent on SundayKing of the media docs - IndependentRevered guru of medicine - Nursing TimesMarvellously succinct, refreshingly sensible - The SpectatorThe patients' champion - Birmingham PostHe writes lucidly and wittily - Good HousekeepingProbably one of the most brilliant men alive today - Irish TimesThe man is a national treasure - What doctors don't tell youetc etc

Book excerpt: 'The mirror, above all - the mirror is our teacher', wrote Leonardo da Vinci. Portraits are an endless source of fascination, responding as they do to the basic human impulse to scrutinize a face and strive to peer into the person behind it. Self-portraits have the added fascination that comes from looking into the mirror and trying to study one's own face and the elusive self lurking behind its surface. This striking and sensitive compilation presents an uninterrupted sequence of 500 self-portraits, in chronological order, all the way from ancient Egypt to the late twentieth century and including painting, drawing, sculpture and photography. The challenge of interpreting and re-creating their own likenesses has proven irresistible to artists throughout the ages. Included here are powerfully evocative works by many of the world's greatest painters and sculptors, from Dürer and Rembrandt to Frida Kahlo and Andy Warhol. Each image is both a work of art and a rigorous exploration in psychology and self-perception: a concept brought to life even by the book's mirrored jacket, on whose surface the reader's own face becomes the 501st self-portrait. Presented without commentary, these works speak for themselves: a compelling collection for every student of art and human nature. The illuminating introduction is by the renowned painter and writer Julian Bell.

Almost 20 years later, Jelly Belly continues to be loved by young audiences in Canada and abroad. This playful collection features rhymes that build on the nursery tradition, as well as interactive poems that combine actions and words in an entertaining romp.
