Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Christopher Castaneda's study of the construction of the pipelines that transported southwestern gas to the Northeast traces the ways in which the federal regulatory process fostered competitive growth in the natural gas industry." "In 1938, the Natural Gas Act granted the Federal Power Commission jurisdiction over the interstate transmission and sale of natural gas. The FPC used its new powers to guide, shape, and manage an intensely competitive period in the industry. As Castaneda shows, aggressive and politically astute entrepreneurs based in the Southwest took advantage of economic opportunity and a regulatory environment conducive to industry growth. They financed and built the nation's longest gas pipelines to connect the massive southwestern reserves with the major northern energy markets. The coal industry, which supplied the raw product for manufactured gas, and the railroad industry, which transported the coal, adamantly but unsuccessfully opposed the action and attempted to halt the introduction of natural gas into their northeastern markets. First, during the war years, emergency regulatory agencies directed the expansion of the industry into Appalachia. Then, in the ensuing peacetime, market forces prompted entrepreneurs to compete vigorously for regulatory approval to build pipelines to sell natural gas in the Northeast." "While previous studies have examined the development of the natural gas industry after 1954, when the Supreme Court's Phillips decision established the FPC as a regulator of price control rather than as a manager of industrial growth, Castaneda's is the first to examine this earlier entrepreneurial era. Based on exhaustive research in corporate records and government documents, Regulated Enterprise offers a case study of government-business relations during a period of rapid industrial expansion and suggests a new way of looking at federal regulation and competitive growth."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis From Texas to the East by : Christopher James Castaneda

Book excerpt: Immediately after World War II, several Houston-based firms organized to transport natural gas from the giant fields of the Southwest to the large utility companies that distributed energy in the urban-industrial centers along the East coast. This relatively inexpensive and clean-burning fuel quickly made spectacular inroads into markets previously served by coal and petroleum. Texas Eastern was one of the major competitors in the post-war industry. The company's origins were unique. Early in 1947, a group of entrepreneurs led by Herman and George R. Brown, founders of the Brown & Root construction firm, purchased the Big Inch and Little Big Inch pipelines from the U.S. government, which had built them to transport crude oil and petroleum product vital to the war effort. By converting these pipelines to the transportation of natural gas, the founders of Texas Eastern got in on the ground floor of a dynamic industry. With full access to company files, Christopher J. Castaneda and Joseph A. Pratt follow the company from its creation in 1947 to its purchase by Panhandle Eastern Corporation in 1989. During this period, Texas Eastern's strategy focused on expansion of its natural gas system and diversification into other related industries including liquefied natural gas sales, North Sea oil and gas production, and Houston real estate. In the 1970s and 1980s, the company faced a series of challenges from the energy crisis, the deregulation of natural gas, and the hostile takeover movement in the energy industries. By the late 1980s, the process of diversification had come full circle, as the company sold off subsidiaries and refocused on the transmission of natural gas as a part of Panhandle Eastern's vast system.

Book Synopsis Pipeline Engineering (2004) by : Henry Liu
Download or read book Pipeline Engineering (2004) written by Henry Liu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pipeline engineering has struggled to develop as a single field of study due to the wide range of industries and government organizations using different types of pipelines for all types of solids, liquids, and gases. This fragmentation has impeded professional development, job mobility, technology transfer, the diffusion of knowledge, and the movement of manpower. No single, authoritative course or book has existed to unite practitioners. In response, Pipeline Engineering covers the essential aspects and types of pipeline engineering in a single volume. This work is divided into two parts. Part I, Pipe Flows, delivers an integrated treatment of all variants of pipe flow including incompressible and compressible, Newtonian and non-Newtonian, slurry and multiphase flows, capsule flows, and pneumatic transport of solids. Part II, Engineering Considerations, summarizes the equipment and methods required for successful planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of pipelines. By addressing the fundamentals of pipeline engineering-concepts, theories, equations, and facts-this groundbreaking text identifies the cornerstones of the discipline, providing engineers with a springboard to success in the field. It is a must-read for all pipeline engineers.
