Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compendium of the Bible of the Religion of Science To determine this matter, let us inquire into the sources of inspiration. These are impressions, dreams, intuition, clairvoyance, clairaudience, psychology, psychometry, magnetism, communications from spirits and from visions of various kinds. All these, that are claimed to be inspired by God, are asserted. To be infallible truth, and the only guide to make peace and good will among the people, and insure them a heavenly home among the blest. Now let us inquire into the sources of knowledge and wisdom. They are obtained by experience, experiments and observations. And finally formulating the facts into sciences. The most 1mportant of these is the science of free speech, which the god of words never hinted at, never thought of, although he is made of words and speeches. Wherever this science is complied with, there is intelligence and peace among the people. All the other sciences are made upon its principles of industry, observations and determina tion to know the truth and abide by it 3. To know what is right and do it. It has taken ages of hard work and close reasoning to obtain the present knowledge and wisdom, and make the religion of science as it now is. No pains have been spared to make it true and just to all people. When we turn to the inspirations from the gods, we find them saying: in six days God made the heavens and earth and all that in them is. The earth was at, sun, moon and stars went round it, and Christians killed astronomers, because they proved that all their astronomical statements from Genesis to revelations are falsehoods. Why did the Christians wish to destroy the geologists? Simply because they proved that all the statements of their inspired writers, about the making of the crust of the earth and its animals, its vegetables and its man, were false. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible, Science, and Faith Those who still view the Bible as a divinely inspired book, despite the repeated attacks made on its authenticity and inspiration, as well as those who yet hold to the teachings of their faith, notwithstanding the theories of a certain school of scientists, who relegate religion and belief in a personal God to the limbo of idle fancies, are frequently accused of forswearing their liberty of thought, and of voluntarily placing themselves in a condition of intellectual thraldom which incapacitates them from appreciating the true significance of the most important inductions and generalizations of modern science. Groundless as this charge is, there are not a few, even among intelligent people, who believe it to be substantially true. And yet nothing could be more false or absurd. As well say that the mariner forfeits his freedom of action because, forsooth, he gives heed to the buoys and lighthouses which are stationed along his course, and which signalize reefs and shoals and indicate places where the safety of his vessel would be imperilled or where navigation is impossible. What buoys and lighthouses are to the seafaring man, that expressions of revealed truth and principles of Christian philosophy are to the man of science. The middle of the last century marks the beginning of present religious thinking. At that time there was a dis tinct uniformity in the presentation of what Christianity is and teaches. The main items were: Hell fire; eternal damnation; the inspiration of the Bible; no salvation for the heathen; salvation by faith; the grace of God; sin; baptism; and heaven for those who believed and were faithful. Salvation was individual and not social. To doubt was one of the greatest of sins. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Science in the Light of Holy Scripture If it did not come in the name of Christ, quote the Bible, use Christian nomenclature, and profess to be the faith once delivered to the saints, I would have paid no more attention to it than to other false religions of the earth. But just because it does come in the name of Christ, teaches in His name - and yet - denies all for which that name stands in Holy Writ; because it exalts a false Christ and preaches a false Christianity, I have sent forth this testimony of warning. The teachings of science drawn from the latest and most correct sources are put down inde pendently of any ulterior motive. The passages of Scripture said to contradict science are then taken up, and the apparent conflict is harmonized. Science has undoubtedly made transcendent prog ress within recent years. This progress is due in great measure to the continual changes occasioned by the rapid frequency of new discoveries. Indeed there is no feature of science as extraordinary as its changeableness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genesis and Science, or the First Leaves of the Bible Where I could not adopt their arguments or make their conclusions my own, I endeavoured to show, from what are deemed authoritative statements, how great is the confusion among themselves, and how utterly without weight and value, in consequence, must be the assertions hazarded by scientists against the Book of Genesis. If censured, as I shall be, for not recklessly deciding some of the burning questions of the day, I shall quietly submit and take it very patiently. Is there not a time for everything '3 If revelation has long since closed its canon, certainly science has not, and before this is done, it is vain to apprehend danger for the cause of truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Science and the Christian Bible Dear Sir - I am one of the subscribers to your little magazine, the sermon. I hope you will make it a success, for the press is the best means of spreading the truth. The pulpit is one means, but the press of the present day is a great power for good or evil, mostly for good. Although we do not always agree with the writers, I believe in being charitable to the opinions of all men. The truth will in the end prevail. And the little froth caused by friction does very little harm. Most of us lose sight of the fact that the press is not the leader but the follower of public Opinion, and the paper which gauges it most correctly is the one which will succeed. Some, but very few, keep abreast, but the great majority of the writers are away behind. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Faith in an Age of Science In my student days I became deeply interested in the relations of science and religion, and in the tentative and provisional solution of the problems which the advance of science offers to religious thought. The sympathy I have felt with the perplexities of successive classes of students, in an experience of more than thirty years as a teacher of geology and the cognate sciences, has kept the subject ever before my mind. The thought of many years finds expression in the present volume. I have ventured to hope that the book may be useful to several classes of people. To some of my brethren in the church, and particularly in the ministry, who have a hardly adequate appreciation of the value of the contribution which science has made to the world's thought, I have hoped that these pages may bring a more generous appreciation of the results of science, and a greater tolerance of those modifications of religious belief which seem necessary to most scientific men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion and Science: From Galileo to Bergson Thus it is quite natural that only a few typical names should, find their places here: and often no sufficient reason may appear for one being included rather than another. For instance, in the tenth chapter, T. H. Green, F. H. Bradley, and A. J. Balfour are mentioned, While Martineau and the Cairds are passed over. Needless to say, there was no doctrinal prejudice here. Again, in the fourth chapter, Pascal is dealt with at some length, but Boehme, an equally important thinker, is ignored. And so on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Science of Health, Based on the Scripture The ideas presented in "The Christian Science of Health, based on the Scriptures," are the result of years of experience, observation and study. They are not untried theories, for they have been put into practice by hundreds of Christians throughout the world, and wherever tried, have proved successful in bringing about a more joyous, healthy and useful life than would have been possible without them, and those who have been living by these principles will have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone who is seeking the right road to health and happiness. It will be necessary for the reader of this book to keep a Bible by his side throughout the time while he is engaged in its study, as the references given must be read for the proper understanding of "The Christian Science of Health," and as each new truth is grasped, it must be at once put into practice, as this will greatly assist in the comprehension of the rest. Unless this is done, the reader cannot expect to receive any benefit from the book, or from the Bible, whence its ideas are drawn. To those who do read and practice its principles, however, there will, without doubt, come the blessings of health-improvement and happiness which they have been seeking, and have sought in vain elsewhere. So the writer would say, "Go, little book, the world is wide," and there are many souls waiting for the light which may come to them through thy pages; carry a blessing to them, and so fulfill the mission on which thou art sent.
