Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Edersheim was a Jewish convert to Christianity who wrote a massive multi-volume tome on the history of the Bible. From the preface: "THE period covered by the central books of the Pentateuch is, in many respects, the most important in Old Testament history, not only so far as regards Israel, but the Church at all times. Opening with centuries of silence and seeking Divine forgetfulness during the bondage of Egypt, the pride and power of Pharaoh are suddenly broken by a series of miracles, culminating in the deliverance of Israel and the destruction of Egypt's host. In that Paschal night and under the blood-sprinkling, Israel as a nation is born of God, and the redeemed people are then led forth to be consecrated at the Mount by ordinances, laws, and judgments. Finally, we are shown the manner in which Jehovah deals with His people, both in judgment and in mercy, till at the last He safely brings them to the promised inheritance. In all this we see not only the history of the ancient people of God, but also a grand type of the redemption and the sanctification of the Church. There is yet another aspect of it, since this narrative exhibits the foundation of the Church in the Covenant of God, and also the principles of Jehovah's government for all time. For, however great the difference in the development, the essence and character of the covenant of grace are ever the same. The Old and New Testaments are essentially one - not two covenants but one, gradually unfolding into full perfectness, "Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone" of the foundation which is alike that of the apostles and prophets. (Ephesians 2:20) There is yet a further consideration besides the intrinsic importance of this history. It has, especially of late, been so boldly misrepresented, and so frequently misunderstood, or else it is so often cursorily read - neither to understanding nor yet to profit - that it seemed desirable to submit it anew to special investigation, following the sacred narrative consecutively from Chapter to Chapter, and almost from Section to Section. In so doing, I have endeavored to make careful study of the original text, with the help of the best critical appliances. So far as I am conscious, I have not passed by any real difficulty, nor yet left unheeded any question that had a reasonable claim to be answered. If this implied a more detailed treatment, I hope it may also, with God's blessing, render the volume more permanently useful. Further, it has been my aim, by the aid of kindred studies, to shed additional light upon the narrative, so as to render it vivid and pictorial, enabling readers to realize for themselves the circumstances under which an event took place. Thus I have in the first two chapters sought to read the history of Israel in Egypt by the light of its monuments, and also to portray the political, social, and religious state of the people prior to the Exodus. Similarly, when following the wanderings of Israel up to the eastern bank of the Jordan, I have availed myself of the best recent geographical investigations, that so the reader might, as it were, see before him the route followed by Israel, the scenery, and all other accessories."

Book excerpt: Alfred Edersheim's classic commentary on the Biblical Book of Exodus is admired for its fluency of explanation, and for the author's immense knowledge of Old Testament lore. Exodus, the second book of the Old Testament, is renowned for its telling of how the ancient Hebrews departed from the Kingdom of the Egyptians. Egypt at the time was ruled by the Pharaoh, a proud and domineering ruler who oppressed those who believed in the one, true God. The manner in which God treated His peoples, showing them a path away from the misery of Pharaoh's rule, and unleashing a series of misfortunes upon the Pharaoh and the Egyptian citizens, form some of the Bible's most memorable passages. Edersheim's narrative is not simply an explanatory reading of the Biblical text; it also delves into the history of Egypt, as discovered by archaeologists and chroniclers of its ancient past. The referencing of multiple and varied sources enhances the commentary, making it useful for students of theology and lay believers alike. The author served as a minister in England; through effort and voracity he became a leading scholar and authority upon the Bible in the 19th century, his books frequently consulted by the Christian priesthood and adherents.

But I may remind my self and others, that the only real understanding Of any portion of Holy Scripture is that conveyed to the heart by the Spirit of God. And, indeed, throughout, my great object has been, not to supersede the constant and prayerful use Of the Bible itself, but rather to lead to those Scriptures, which alone are able to make wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. But my scope has also been wider. I have wished to furnish, what may be useful for reading in the family, --what indeed may, in some measure, serve the place of a popular exposition of the sacred history. More than this, I hope it may likewise prove a book to put in the hands of students, to show them what the Bible really teaches." --Alfred Edersheim

Book excerpt: This is the second volume in a new series, the Historical Commentary on the Old Testament, which devotes explicit attention to the history of interpretation of biblical tradition in all its stages, both within and without the Hebrew canon. As the term "Old Testament" indicates, the commentary stands in the Christian exegetical tradition. The team of contributors comprises scholars from all over the world and from any different churches and denominations. for Old Testament scholars, but also for ministers and other interested parties. The treatment of every pericope is preceded by a new translation and a section called "Essentials and Perspectives" in which the author summarizes the results of the exegesis in non-technical language. The primacy here is assigned to the final stage of the text. The summary should incite the user to consult the main body of the exegesis which is headed "Scholarly Exposition". scholarship

Book excerpt: The book of Exodus records the pivotal events in the formation of biblical Israel—the deliverance from slavery, the leadership of Moses, the wilderness wanderings, and the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai. Bible scholar Nahum Sarna, whose widely praised Understanding Genesis has become a standard text, examines and illuminates the distinctiveness of the Exodus narrative in light of ancient Near Eastern history and contemporaneous cultures—Egyptian, Assyrian, Canaanite, and Babylonian. In a new foreword to this edition, Sarna takes up the debate over whether the exodus from Egypt really happened, clarifying the arguments on both sides and drawing us back to the uniqueness and enduring significance of biblical text.
