Book excerpt: The Code of Hammurabi is a well-preserved Babylonian law code of ancient Mesopotamia, dating back to about 1754 BC. It is one of the oldest deciphered writings of significant length in the world. The sixth Babylonian king, Hammurabi, enacted the code, and partial copies exist on a man-sized stone stele and various clay tablets. The Code consists of 282 laws, with scaled punishments, adjusting "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" (lex talionis) as graded depending on social status, of slave versus free man. Nearly one-half of the Code deals with matters of contract, establishing, for example, the wages to be paid to an ox driver or a surgeon. Other provisions set the terms of a transaction, establishing the liability of a builder for a house that collapses, for example, or property that is damaged while left in the care of another. A third of the code addresses issues concerning household and family relationships such as inheritance, divorce, paternity, and sexual behavior. Only one provision appears to impose obligations on an official; this provision establishes that a judge who reaches an incorrect decision is to be fined and removed from the bench permanently. A few provisions address issues related to military service. Hammurabi ruled for nearly 42 years, c. 1792 to 1750 BC according to the Middle chronology. In the preface to the law, he states, "Anu and Bel called by name me, Hammurabi, the exalted prince, who feared Marduk, the patron god of Babylon (The Human Record, Andrea & Overfield 2005), to bring about the rule in the land." On the stone slab there are 44 columns and 28 paragraphs that contained 282 laws. The laws follow along the rules of 'an eye for an eye'.

Book excerpt: David Wright argues that the so-called Covenant Collection of the Torah (Exodus 20:23-23:19) is chiefly the work of a single author, is the result of intellectual interaction with the author's sources and it may have had a politically ideological purpose, somewhat similar to that of the Laws of Hammurabi.

Yet Christ appears in every book of the Bible, sometimes in words, sometimes in shadow, sometimes in prophecy. As Jesus revealed to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, He can be found “in all the Scriptures” (Luke 24:27). And as we learn to find Jesus in every verse, we realize His constant presence in our lives as well. In The Bible Code, bestselling author of The Joshua Code, O. S. Hawkins, takes us from Genesis to Revelation as he illuminates Scripture through the light of Christ. In Exodus, He is the Passover Lamb. In Deuteronomy, He is the Bread of Life. In Song of Solomon, He is our Bridegroom. This book makes a beautiful gift for: Graduation Christmas Father’s Day Birthdays As we seek Jesus in the whole Bible, we find life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dale Patrick examines the first five books of the Bible--the Pentateuch--the Law. He provides an effective method for studying and understanding this vital part of the canon. His introduction concentrates on the exposition of the major thrust of Old Testament Law: the Ten Commandments, the Book of the Covenant, the Deuteronomic Law, the Holiness Code, and the Priestly Law. Law--rules and regulations, concepts and principles, legal codes--written and unwritten. Patrick tackles important questions surrounding the formation of the Law. What is the Law? How was it formulated? What implications does the Law of the Israelites have for Christians today? Patrick's deft handling and answering of these questions results in a book that provides a means to understand the specific rules governing the concepts and principles of the written law so that we may grasp the unwritten law; i.e., the justice, righteousness, and holiness required by God. Patrick offers critical exposition in a format that makes a seemingly difficult and esoteric part of the Bible accessible to the reader. This introductory text serves as a springboard to further study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most scholars believe that the numerous similarities between the Covenant Code (Exodus 20:23-23:19) and Mesopotamian law collections, especially the Laws of Hammurabi, which date to around 1750 BCE, are due to oral tradition that extended from the second to the first millennium. This book offers a fundamentally new understanding of the Covenant Code, arguing that it depends directly and primarily upon the Laws of Hammurabi and that the use of this source text occurred during the Neo-Assyrian period, sometime between 740-640 BCE, when Mesopotamia exerted strong and continuous political and cultural influence over the kingdoms of Israel and Judah and a time when the Laws of Hammurabi were actively copied in Mesopotamia as a literary-canonical text. The study offers significant new evidence demonstrating that a model of literary dependence is the only viable explanation for the work. It further examines the compositional logic used in transforming the source text to produce the Covenant Code, thus providing a commentary to the biblical composition from the new theoretical perspective. This analysis shows that the Covenant Code is primarily a creative academic work rather than a repository of laws practiced by Israelites or Judeans over the course of their history. The Covenant Code, too, is an ideological work, which transformed a paradigmatic and prestigious legal text of Israel's and Judah's imperial overlords into a statement symbolically countering foreign hegemony. The study goes further to study the relationship of the Covenant Code to the narrative of the book of Exodus and explores how this may relate to the development of the Pentateuch as a whole.

Book excerpt: This overview of the Pentateuch reviews the various historical-critical attempts to read it that arise from notions about the social evolution of Israel's religion and culture. Is the Pentateuch an accumulation of folk traditions, a work of ancient historiography, a document legitimizing religious reform? The present book, in dialogue with competing views, advocates a compositional model that recognizes the social and historical diversity of the literary strata. It argues that a proto-Pentateuchal author created a comprehensive history from Genesis to Numbers that was written as a prologue to the Deuteronomistic History (Deuteronomy to 2 Kings) in the exilic period and later expanded by a Priestly writer to make it the foundational document of the Jerusalem temple community.

It was found encrypted in the holy Torah, the first five books of the Old Testament. There is a prediction that the same code will be discovered in the holy testaments of the Vedas and the Koran. If you love God above all things and mankind as yourself, it is your religious faith that enlightened your soul and your character; you must therefore cling to that faith. The Bible Code confirms that only God knows the future. This book therefore does not contain prophecy; it clarifies prophecy given to us long ago. Much of it was given in the form of metaphor because we were not ready for the facts at that time. The Code gives us descriptions of actual events and prospective dates when they may occur based on the current state of the world. These events should have occurred between 1995 and 2002 but for reasons described later, were delayed. On the morning of the 11 September 2001, the world changed with the destruction of the World Trade Centre in New York. President Bush described it as the beginning of a long struggle between good and evil. He was right. According to the Bible Code, it was the start of a ten-and-a-h

Book excerpt: The foundation for all study of biblical law is the assumption that the Covenant Code is the oldest legal code in the Hebrew Bible and that all other laws are revisions of that code. This book sets forth the radical hypothesis that those laws in the covenant code that are similar to Deuteronomy and the Holiness Code are in fact later than both of these, and therefore can't be taken as the foundation of Hebrew Law.

Book excerpt: The Old Testament law is foundational for our understanding of the Bible, but for many it remains some of the Old Testament's most foreign and exotic material. This book by a leading evangelical expert in biblical law helps readers understand Old Testament law, how it functioned in the Old Testament, and how it is (and is not) instructive for contemporary Christians. The author explicates the often confusing legal system of ancient Israel, differentiates between time-bound cultural aspects of Israelite law and universally applicable aspects of the divine value system, and shows the ethical relevance of Old Testament law for Christians today.

Book excerpt: "Christian Code" is an attempt to consolidate and codify by subject matter all the laws of the Bible-all the teachings of Jesus, all the commandments of Moses, all the fruit, virtues, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, all the saintly disciplines and sacraments, the many popular catechisms (Jewish, Catholic, Reformed, etc.), significant works of religious literature (Augustine, Maimonides, Aquinas, Luther, etc.), and most importantly, the scripture itself-into a single volume. The intent is to help the reader better understand the law-where it comes from, why it is there, what it means, and how to obey it-and facilitate this in a practical way by arranging the laws as one would an officially regulated legal document (e.g. the "United States Code") with identification numbers for each law, multiple levels and categories of law, table listings, internal and external references, and scholarly notes. The resulting 539 page codex contains 12 titles, 52 chapters, 613 sections, 4169 verses, and 918 footnotes. A scripture index is included in the back.

Book excerpt: Biblical Law: Being a Text of the Statutes, Ordinances, and Judgments Established in the Holy Bible with Many Allusions to Secular Laws: Ancient, Medieval, and Modern, Documented to the Scriptures, Judicial Decisions, and Legal Literature Clark offers a systematic presentation of the commandments, precedents and customs found in the King James Version of the Bible. Following the organization of a legal text, the work is divided into sections on General Principles, Political Law, Civil Law, Economics and Welfare, General Laws, Penal Law, Crimes and Punishment, and Procedure and Administration of Law. " 'A PANDECT of Profitable Laws, against Rebellious Spirits!' Thus the Scriptures are described in the preface to the King James Version. Indeed, the Holy Bible is not only a repository of early laws; it is the code at once most ancient and best known by those who have been observers of the Christian Creed; and to it our later laws and governmental processes are, in essential and enduring parts, immediately indebted. (. . .) [T]he author, in order that Biblical law may be of easy access-has extracted the many commandments, precedents and customs which are to be found throughout the sacred writings and has sought to present them logically and systematically, in the style of a modern law book." -- Preface, v
