Book excerpt: "In the fall of 1821 Reverend William Cravens came to the new community of Indianapolis to minister to those of the Methodist faith. That first church in the city of Indianapolis in 1821 was known as Wesley Chapel. The congregation first met in Isaac Wilson's log cabin on the Capitol Square grounds and was served by itinerant preachers. In 1825 a log cabin on Maryland at Meridian Street was purchased and enlarged to seat 200 people. It continued to be served by circuit riders. From 1829 to 1846, the congregation met in a small brick building on the Circle at Meridian Street. In 1846 the Wesley Chapel was torn down and a new church was built on the same site at a cost of $10,000; it housed the congregation during the Civil War and until 1869. After the war, the congregation decided to build "the most beautiful church in the city." They moved to New York and Meridian Streets and built an ornate Gothic structure with tall, slender spires for $100,000. This building served the congregation until a fire in 1904 burned it beyond repair. It was during this time that Wesley Chapel was renamed Meridian Street Episcopal Church"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What an amazing journey it has been! A celebration marking the hundredth anniversary of the dedication of the imposing stone structure overlooking the southern end of Diamond Park in the city of Meadville, Pennsylvania, kicked off on Sunday, March 31, 1968. Marking the occasion, a volume detailing the early years of the Methodist Church in Meadville was produced, putting access to the history of the congregation in easily accessible form. The current volume has been designed to apply that tradition of one-stop accessibility to the subsequent half century. To bring that dream to fruition, a devoted group has devoted countless hours to researching and compiling the years 1968 to 2021. Continuing to build on the kind of firm foundation that grows from an awareness of where Stone United Methodist Church has been, its move into the always unknown future is underway. Greetings, reader! Thank you for joining us in a look back at the past fifty-plus years of the ministry of Stone United Methodist Church. My heartfelt thanks to Dr. Armendia Pierce Dixon for compiling the material and writing the text. Her attention to detail and faithful accounting of events has been invaluable. Thanks also to those who have given of their time, resources, energy, and expertise over these past decades to make possible the ministry you read about in these pages. Honoring our past with confidence, we look to the future while embracing our mission statement: Compelled by God's love, Stone UMC is an inclusive community of faith, meeting people where they are, connecting them with Christ and one another, helping them live as disciples of Jesus Christ. To God be the glory. --Rev. Sarah Daniels Roncolato

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in northern Middlesex County, South Plainfield has a rich and fascinating history. It was first settled by the Lenape and later by immigrants from Scotland, England, and the Netherlands. Mills were built, and by the 18th century, it was home to numerous farms and two hamlets: Samptown and New Brooklyn. During the American Revolution, skirmishes shook the sleepy community. The 19th century brought the arrival of railroads and industry. The 20th century saw South Plainfield transformed. The Lehigh Valley Railroad built an enormous coal storage yard. Spicer Manufacturing opened a factory manufacturing universal joints for early trucks and cars. Harris Steel, a fabricator of steel for bridges and skyscrapers, constructed a sprawling plant in South Plainfield. After World War II, the borough grew by leaps and bounds as new suburban developments replaced farms and fields. Today, South Plainfield is a strong community with a diverse population located at the crossroads of central New Jersey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short-term mission trips are commonplace in American church life. Yet their growth and practice have largely been divorced from theological education, seminary training, and mission studies. Consuming Mission takes important steps in offering a theological assessment of the practice of STM and tools for subsequent mission training. Using relevant academic studies and original focus-group interviews, Haynes offers important insights into this ubiquitous practice. While carefully examining the biblical and historical foundations for mission, Consuming Mission engages more contemporary movements like the Missio Dei, Fresh Expressions, the Emergent Church, and Third-Wave Mission movements that have helped shape mission. The unique role of United Methodist mission is illustrated through its historical roots and contemporary expression in the ubiquitous STM movement in the United States. Haynes uses original field research data to gather the implicit and explicit theologies of lay and clergy participants. Cultural influences are significantly influencing STM participants as they use their time, money, sacrifice, and service, applied in the name of mission, to purchase a personal growth experience commonly sought by pilgrims. The resulting tensions from mixing mission, pilgrimage, and tourism creates are explored. Haynes offers important steps to move the practice away from using mission for personal edification.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptism is a foundational rite and sacrament of the church. Over the centuries, the significance of baptism for Christian life and faith has been confirmed by the church, but baptism remains a highly controversial topic. Numerous disagreements exist between denominations and faith traditions—including the various descendants of the original Methodist movement—over the doctrine and practice of baptism. Who can be baptized? Why is baptism done? What does the rite mean? New Life in the Risen Christ: A Wesleyan Theology of Baptism seeks to address confusion over baptism and offer a coherent treatment of the sacrament from a Wesleyan theological perspective. Distinguished scholars from around the world are brought together in this volume to examine the writings of John Wesley and offer scholarly reflections on topics related to the sacrament of baptism. Their work is an invitation to remember and be thankful for baptism as the sign of divine grace that initiates Christians into a new reality: life in the risen Christ.
