Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bertrams, Vol. 2 of 2: A Novel George bertram, as we have seen, returned to town after his interview with Miss Waddington without seeing his father. Neither to his mind nor to hers was any comfort brought by that grammatical rule in which Miss Baker had found so much consolation. For both of them the separation was now a thing completed. Each knew enough of the other to feel that that other's pride was too high to admit of his or her making any first fresh advancement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Winifred Bertram and the World She Lived That carpet on which the foot sank noiselessly as on the softest mossy turf, those soft draperies and languishing chairs and sofas, those bronze stat nettes and quaint vases, what imagination could ever dive so far as to trace them back to factories and warehouses, to the hammering and screwing and planing and stitching of working men and women? N 0! They must have floated into their places like the furniture of Aladdin's palace, like the stones at the voice of Orpheus, at the call of a genie, to the sound of fairy music. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Muriel Bertram: A Tale It was a gray sort of day, but the gray, Qua ker-like in softness, had a beauty of its own. Blue mists gathered in hollows, or circled clumps of trees, and a silver brook wound through the broad pasture-lands. Outlines of hills stood in purple clearness against a yellow - white horizon, which caught a pinkish hue towards the west. Slight glimmers of green near at hand gave promise of spring. Muriel, with her head thrown backward, and her hand on the ivy-clad wall, took in the picture dreamily. There was something nu-english and out of the common about her; and about the curve of her mouth, and the fall of her eyelids, was a touch of repression and sadness. Knowing she ought to hasten ou, she yet de layed. The extreme quiet of all around infected her with a curious disinclination to move. Few people passed along this upper road at any time, and in winter it was especially lonely. Muriel had met none, and did not expect to meet any. She was in a mood for solitude, and had become so much wrapped up in her own thoughts as to be quite unaware of a break in her solitude. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House of Hidden Treasure: A Novel For Maurice Bertram it had no terrors, no associations, no memories that were not entirely delightful. Full of romance and poetry, it was to him an embodied fairy tale. Sweet and subtle fragrance pervaded it in his memory, faint odours of lavender and dried roses. There is no fragrance to match that of old roses; the fragrance of their bloom is coarse by comparison with that subtle, spiritual, pathetic scent. All the happiness his orphan childhood had known was associated with that house; he had dreamed of it by day and by night, longed for it, pictured it, until, when he stood a grown man before its heavy doorway and regarded its steep, low-brewed roof and leaning gable-end, he scarcely knew it again yet it was unchanged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leo Bertram, or the Brave Heart: From the German of Franz Hoffman These words were spoken by a fine lad of nineteen to his younger brother. They had been out fishing. The appearance of the boat, upon which a pile of nets was lying, and the garb of the two brothers betokened their trade very plainly, and there were also proofs testifying to their skill and success, as they loaded themselves with the spoils. Willy would have taken the oars also with him, but his brother objected. Leave them there, he said; I must start for Bremen at day break to-morrow; no one will trouble the oars to-night - at least I advise them not to. Willy threw them back in the boat, and followed his brother's rapid steps along the shore, until they turned to the right, and saw a one-story tiled-roof house standing in a thick grove of trees. Perhaps our readers some time may have seen a house so home-like and attractive in its appearance that they have exclaimed in voluntarily, I would willingly pass my life there and this cottage, the home of the brothers, would have prepossessed you in its favor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bertram Dobell: Bookseller and Man of Letters Whatever of distinction or incompatibility in general between booksellers and men of letters may be implied in the title of this article, no one will be likely to deny that Bertram Dobell has earned - literally earned - as much right to the latter term as to the former. His shop, in the heart of London, is known to every bibliophile, and is the best of starting-points for one of those rambles amongst the many old book-shops of the city in which the soul of the book-hunter delights. And the owner of that shop is himself an author and publisher also; a poet of no mean order - one who has even dared to resent (in verse) the imputation of being a minor poet; he is an "excavator of royal mummy-pits of verse," to whose labours therein, certain "inheritors of unfulfilled renown" - unfulfilled for nearly three centuries at least - owe their heritage to-day; he is a critic of great insight and sympathy - an authority even in certain fields which he has made his own - whose contributions to our knowledge of Elia and his contemporaries make up a most delightful volume; and it is mainly owing to his efforts that the author of "The City of Dreadful Night" has obtained to-day that recognition of his genius denied to him, or at least given only in scanty measure, during his lifetime. Such are a few of Bertram Dobell's claims to the title of a man of letters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1896 edition. Excerpt: ... Chapter VII. THE BACK. Jn the middle line of the back there is a furrow, more or less well-marked, according to the muscularity of the subject, and bounded by muscular masses, which are formed chiefly by the complexus muscle of either side jn the cervical region, and by the erectores spinae in the remainder of the back. At the bottom of this furrow the spines of the vertebras may be felt, and, as Holden remarks, made evident in the living subject to the 'eye by friction in the median line, when red patches will appear and indicate their position. The spine of the axis may easily be felt beneath the occiput, and that of the seventh or vertebra prominens at the root of the neck, with frequently the spine of the sixth above it. The spines of the vertebrae between the second and the sixth cannot be felt as individual structures, but a ridge indicating their position and that of the ligamentum nuchae can distinctly be made out. The third dorsal spine corresponds to the inner end of the spine of the scapula, and the seventh to the inferior angle of that bone. The twelfth corresponds to the head of the last rib, and the lowest part of the trapezius muscle, which may be made evident in a thin. subject by raising the arm and scapula as high as possible. The highest point of the crest of the ilium corresponds to the fourth lumbar spine. On account of the downward direction of the spines of the dorsal vertebrae, these prominences do not all correspond to the rib which belongs to them. The second dorsal spine corresponds to the head of the third rib, and so on, each spine corresponding to the head of the rib of the vertebra below it, until the eleventh and twelfth spines, which are on a level with their own ribs. The scapula covers the ribs from the...
