But the impact on veterans across the globe, as well as the war's effects on individual lives and communities, is a largely neglected issue. As a consequence of cultural and legal barriers, the oral histories of the Vietnam War currently available in English are predictably one-sided, providing limited insight into the inner workings of the Communist nations that participated in the war. Furthermore, many of these accounts focus on combat experiences rather than the backgrounds, belief systems, and social experiences of interviewees, resulting in an incomplete historiography of the war. Chinese native Xiaobing Li corrects this oversight in Voices from the Vietnam War: Stories from American, Asian, and Russian Veterans. Li spent seven years gathering hundreds of personal accounts from survivors of the war, accounts that span continents, nationalities, and political affiliations. The twenty-two intimate stories in the book feature the experiences of American, Chinese, Russian, Korean, and North and South Vietnamese veterans, representing the views of both anti-Communist and Communist participants, including Chinese officers of the PLA, a Russian missile-training instructor, and a KGB spy. These narratives humanize and contextualize the war's events while shedding light on aspects of the war previously unknown to Western scholars. Providing fresh perspectives on a long-discussed topic, Voices from the Vietnam War offers a thorough and unique understanding of America's longest war.

Book excerpt: Annotation "A highly original study that is of particular importance as communities across the United States and elsewhere explore heritage tourism as a way to boost local economies, Sally J. Southwick's book Building on a Borrowed Past: Place and Identity in Pipestone, Minnesota demonstrates how small-town citizens and boosters contributed to the generic image of "the Indian" in American culture and describes the process of one culture absorbing the heritage of another for civic advantage."--BOOK JACKET. She’s the subject of town gossip… … and he’s the man from her past. How did she get here? It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Finley Kelly has dreamed of her wedding day for years. But those dreams didn’t include standing up in front of everyone she knew. Alone. And it didn’t include doing it two more times. Three weddings. No marriage. A new nickname as the “unwed bride.” Now that she’s engaged again-- this time to her wealthy boss-- Finley is determined to make the fourth time stick. When she leaves the church, it will be with a husband at her side. She just never considered that her fiancé might not love her. When a man from her past returns to town, it threatens to destroy yet another supposedly perfect day. Knox Morgan is everything she never dared to want, everything she never thought she’d have. But she made a commitment, and the clock is ticking. This time, when she reaches the end of the aisle, will she get her happily ever after? Escape into this sweet romance that will give you all the feels. Always a Bride is the first book in the Always in Love series. Enjoy small town beach life with sweet and swoony men, strong-willed women, and family ties that can’t be broken. Book excerpt: Morgan Llywelyn gives readers a near-future, apocalyptic thriller with her signature depth and intimacy of character. In Drop by Drop, the first in a new trilogy, global catastrophe occurs as all plastic mysteriously liquefies. All the small components that make many technologies possible--navigation systems, communications, medical equipment--fail. In Sycamore River, citizens find their lives disrupted as everything they've depended on melts around them, sometimes with fatal results. All they can rely upon is themselves. And this is only the beginning.Llywelyn blends her signature character-driven portrait of small-town life with the appeal of William Fortschen's One Second After.
