Book excerpt: How is this book unique? Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About Michael O'Halloran by Gene Stratton-Porter This early 20th-century classic chronicles the adventures of an orphaned newspaper boy in his "hand-to-hand scuffle" with life in a midwestern metropolis. Gene Stratton-Porter's faith in the healing power of nature is also apparent, in a lovingly depicted tamarack swamp set near the city. This is the story of a spunky 10 year old orphan boy named Michael. It starts with Michael living alone, hiding from the Children's home, working as a newsboy, and following the rules his Mother gave him before she died. He is quite precocious and meets several interesting people in his day to day activities. Eventually he happens on a poor, dirty, little crippled girl wailing because her abusive granny has died and the Children's Home will be coming after her. Michael manages to get her to his home, clean her up, and claim her as his family. A lot of responsibility for a 10 year old, which he soon discovers and plots to remedy. This is quite an enjoyable tale.

Book excerpt: If you loved Gene Stratton-Porter's A Girl of the Limberlost, be sure to add her later novel A Daughter of the Land to your reading list. The family that serves as the focus of the novel isn't perfect, but they manage to fix their foibles and come together to make something beautiful and lasting. It's an engaging read for anyone who's ever fantasized about leaving city life behind and living off the land. Gene Stratton-Porter (August 17, 1863 - December 6, 1924) was an American author, early naturalist, nature photographer, and one of the first women to form a movie studio and production company, Gene Stratton-Porter Productions, Inc. She wrote several best-selling novels and well-received columns in national magazines, such as McCall's. Her works were translated into several languages, including Braille, and Stratton-Porter was estimated to have had 50 million readers around the world. She used her position and income as a well-known author to support conservation of Limberlost Swamp and other wetlands in the state of Indiana. She was born Geneva Grace Stratton in Wabash County, Indiana near Lagro. She was the twelfth and last child born to Mary and Mark Stratton.Early on, her family shortened her name to Geneve and she later shortened it further to Gene. Stratton-Porter's novel Laddie corresponds in many particulars with her early life, and Gene herself described this as the most auto-biographical novel. For example, the narrative takes place in the first person, with the story being related by the twelfth child of the "Stanton" family. The name of the beloved older brother (title character) "Laddie" is identical with Stratton-Porter's own treasured brother who died in an accident when she was young. As in Stratton-Porter's own family, the novelized Laddie is connected with the land and identifies with their father's vocation.Despite not finishing high school, Gene became an avid reader and lifelong scholar of ecology and wildlife.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is this book unique? Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About Laddie: A True Blue Story by Gene Stratton-Porter Loosely based on Stratton-Porter's own childhood, Laddie is a double tale -- the classic poor-boy/rich-girl romance and the story of a child of nature and her idyllic childhood. This is the delightful story of a loving family narrated from the perspective of the "Little Sister." The story was published in 1913 and probably takes place in the mid to late 1800's. We get to appreciate Little Sister's love of the land, the birds, her family and particularly her love and devotion to her oldest brother and hero, Laddie. While we enjoy seeing how a loving family associates, disciplines, and cares for one another with a love and belief of God and the Savior, we also see some contrasting views of a family whose father has forsaken God and the poison he carries while holding a long grudge.

It is considered a classic of Indiana literature. It is the sequel to her earlier novel Freckles. The story takes place in Indiana, in and around the Limberlost Swamp. Even at the time, this impressive wetland region was being reduced by heavy logging, natural oil extraction and drainage for agriculture. (The swamp and forestland eventually ceased to exist, though projects since the 1990s have begun to restore a small part of it.)

Book excerpt: One of the most beloved characters of the early-twentieth-century from the American naturalist and bestselling author of A Girl of the Limberlost. Raised in a Chicago orphanage and missing one hand, Freckles has survived a harsh childhood. When he becomes a security guard for a timber company in Indiana’s Limberlost swamp, he comes to embrace the beauty of the wilderness and the many animals he encounters on his daily rounds, finally finding his place in the world and the courage to open his heart. One of the most well-known authors of her time, Gene Stratton-Porter was a nature activist whose novels reflected her love of the Indiana wetlands she called home. “There’s a love story, villains, adventure, close brushes with death, and absolute redemption at the end—and Freckles learns the secret of his paternity, which given the romantic conventions of books such as these, is absolutely glorious.” —Buckeye Muse
