It is centered on an insightful American woman's daily experience, recorded in her diary from 1939 to 1942, wherein personal reflections and epic thrust yield an intriguing sense of plot. Author Lester Bartson draws on many external sources in order to bring to life the diarist's interesting native city of Canton, Ohio, her subsequent service as a WAC during the liberation of France, and postwar initiatives in Nova Scotia. Bartson uses recently discovered original material to piece together the poignant story of her husband, a Canadian RAF pilot during the First World War. Historical and cultural issues are given perspective by richly interactive notes, a broadly based Introduction, reflective Epilogue, thematic Index, and more than fifty individual illustrations.

Book excerpt: “Deserves consideration from anyone interested in how the ship design process is translated into actual product which in turn can win a war.” —Warship International The Battle of the Atlantic, fought by the Allies to maintain lines of communication and vital trade routes for armaments, men, and basic sustenance, could not have been won without the 2,710 Liberty ships that were designed and built for those critical one-way voyages to Europe—more than one voyage was considered a bonus. The kudos for the Liberty’s construction rightfully belongs to America, but few people know that the groundwork for the shape of the hull and its basic hydrodynamics took place in the North Sands shipyard of Joseph Thompson & Sons Ltd on the banks on the River Wear in Sunderland, England. This new book follows the path of the critical designs that flowed from Thompson’s shipyard, commencing with SS Embassage in 1935, to SS Dorington Court in 1939, through the SS Empire Wind/Wave series for the Ministry of War Transport in 1940 to SS Empire Liberty in 1941. These led to the sixty Ocean Class vessels built by Henry J. Kaiser and, from these, the Liberty ship was adapted by American naval architects Gibbs & Cox who, to this very day, still claim they designed the Liberty ship. With the use of beautifully drawn ship profiles, starting with World War I designs, then the critical designs from Thompson’s shipyard, and particularly a drawing comparing the Liberty ship with its British progenitor, the author demonstrates just how much of the former was borrowed from the latter. While some credit has been given to Thompson’s designs, this new book offers the first real proof as to the direct link between his work, the Empire Liberty/Ocean Class, and the Liberty ship that followed. In addition, the book demonstrates the versatility of the Liberty ship and explores those that were developed for specialist use, from hospital ships and mule transports to nuclear-age missile range ships.

Book excerpt: In the history of naval warfare probably no type of ship has provided more firepower per ton than the monitor – indeed they were little more than a huge gun mounting fitted on a simple, self-propelled raft. Designed and built rapidly to fulfil an urgent need for heavy shore-bombardment during World War I, they were top secret in conception, and largely forgotten when the short-lived requirement was over. Nevertheless, they were important ships, which played a significant role in many Great War campaigns and drove many of the advances in long-range gunnery later applied to the battle fleet. Indeed, their value was rediscovered during the Second World War when a final class was built. Monitors were largely ignored by naval historians until Ian Buxton produced the first edition of this book in 1978. Although published privately, this became an established classic and copies of the first edition are now almost unobtainable, so this new edition will be welcomed by many. It has been completely revised, extended and redesigned to a generous large format which allows material deleted from the original edition for lack of space to be restored.

Now, for the first time since Gordon W. Prange's Miracle at Midway, comes a myth-smashing new interpretation of this great naval engagement." "Making extensive use of untapped Japanese primary sources, including Imperial Navy operational records never before used by Western authors, Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully reconstruct the actual sequence of the critical events of June 4, 1942, looking afresh at the decisions of the U.S and Japanese commanders, and placing them within the seldom-understood context of the Imperial Navy's doctrine and technology. Readable and filled with insights and reassessments, Shattered Sword is the first substantive contribution to our understanding of the Battle of Midway in more than a generation. With a foreword by a leading World War II naval historian John Lundstrom, it will become an indispensable part of any military history buff's library."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “handsome volume” offers a “lavishly illustrated” journey back to the golden age of steam travel through first-hand accounts and images of the passengers (Bruce Peter, author of Ship Style). A Century of Sea Travel is an eye-opening voyage through the golden years of the passenger steamship, a voyage described by the very travelers who sailed on these magnificent engineering marvels. In memoirs and letters home, diaries and the backs of postcards, the recorded experiences of every aspect of steamship travel are here relived: from details of the ships, the crew, and fellow passengers; to the food and entertainment on board; to tales of romance, accidents, and disasters; and of being dreadfully sick during storms at sea. The writers were emigrants or colonial rulers, men of letters, young men seeking their fortune, wives on their way to new homes abroad; some were rich, many were poor and escaping the hardship of downtrodden lives. All had in common the experience of voyaging at sea. Vividly brought to life by full-color and black-and-white postcards, travel posters, promotional brochures, fine art, photographs, maps, luggage labels, health inspection certificates, and itineraries, the authors have woven together word and image into a page-turning narrative that evocatively describes an age (1840–1950) now lost to time.
