Book excerpt: One of today's most challenging issues in energy physics and engineering is the utilization of nuclear fusion power which can provide a lasting energy supply on earth. In the context of designing and developing magnetic confinement fusion reactors, the behavior of high-energetic ions in tokamaks deserves careful examination in theory, experiments and simulations since these ions play a crucial role in achieving and sustaining favorable fusion conditions in the fuel plasma. Thus a burning deuterium (D)-tritium (T) plasma tends to become self-heated by fusion born alphas. Therefore the behavior of energetic alpha particles in a D-T fusion reactor, i.e. their transport and losses as well as their impact on plasma stability must be well understood. In this book we examine the trajectories and diffusion properties of fast alpha particles in a tokamak reactor. For that we employ an orbit following code using a symplectic integration algorithm which allows for accurate calculations of the ion trajectories over long time periods, even in the presence of magnetic and electric field perturbations. The investigations presented in the book are of scientific importance to fusion research.

Book excerpt: The numerical methods used in the full particle-orbit following SPIRAL code are described and a number of physics studies performed with the code are presented to illustrate its capabilities. The SPIRAL code is a test-particle code and is a powerful numerical tool to interpret and plan fast-ion experiments in Tokamaks. Gyro-orbit effects are important for fast ions in low-field machines such as NSTX and to a lesser extent in DIII-D.A number of physics studies are interlaced between the description of the code to illustrate its capabilities. Results on heat loads generated by a localized error-field on the DIII-D wall are compared to measurements. The enhanced Triton losses caused by the same localized error-field are calculated and compared to measured neutron signals. MHD activity such as tearing modes and Toroidicity-induced Alfven Eigenmodes (TAEs) have a profound effect on the fast-ion content of Tokamak plasmas and SPIRAL can calculate the effects of MHD activity on the confined and lost fast-ion population as illustrated for a burst of TAE activity in NSTX. The interaction between Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequency (ICRF) heating and fast ions depends solely on the gyro-motion of the fast ions and is captured exactly in the SPIRAL code. A calculation of ICRF absorption on beam ions in ITER is presented. The effects of high harmonic fast wave heating on the beam-ion slowing-down distribution in NSTX is also studied.

Book excerpt: In this thesis we discuss measurements and modeling of minority heated fast-ion distributions in the Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies (ICRF) on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak. Analysis of fast-ions >100Te is important for both ITER and a future fusion reactor as both will have a significant population of 3.5 MeV alpha particles generated in fusion reactions. Fast particles in this energy range can drive unstable modes such as Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmodes (TAEs) and Reversed Shear Alfvén Eigenmodes (RSAEs). Furthermore, energetic ions may display plasma properties that differ from the bulk plasma. It is crucial to benchmark current simulation codes with measurements from highly energetic fast-ions on current devices. This thesis will focus on measurements of the fast-ion distribution made on C-Mod with an upgraded Compact Neutral Particle Analyzer (CNPA). Measurements of the fast-ion distributions will reveal strong dependences of the fast-ion effective temperature on both electron density and plasma current. For further analysis, we use the simulated distributions generated by the coupled full-wave spectral solver AORSA, with the zero orbit-width bounce-averaged Fokker-Planck code CQL3D. A new synthetic diagnostic integrated into CQL3D is used to make direct comparisons with the CNPA. We find that for plasmas that have a steady-state fast-ion distribution (df /dt = 0) the simulation and the experiment have good agreement. However, in simulations where the fast-ion distribution is evolving in time (df/dt =/ 0) we find a discrepancy between the simulation and the experimental results. The simulation is seen to evolve much slower than the experiment. Various reasons for the discrepancy are explored, including the possibility of a violation of the quasi-linear theory used in CQL3D.

Book excerpt: This book of proceedings collects the papers presented at the Workshop on Diagnostics for ITER, held at Villa Monastero, Varenna (Italy), from August 28 to September 1, 1995. The Workshop was organised by the International School of Plasma Physics "Piero Caldirola. " Established in 1971, the ISPP has organised over fifty advanced courses and workshops on topics mainly related to plasma physics. In particular, courses and workshops on plasma diagnostics (previously held in 1975, 1978, 1982, 1986, and 1991) can be considered milestones in the history of this institution. Looking back at the proceedings of the previous meetings in Varenna, one can appreciate the rapid progress in the field of plasma diagnostics over the past 20 years. The 1995 workshop was co-organised by the Istituto di Fisica del Plasma of the National Research Council (CNR). In contrast to previous Varenna meetings on diagnostics, which have covered diagnostics in present-day tokamaks and which have had a substantial tutorial component, the 1995 workshop concentrated specifically on the problems and challenges of ITER diagnostics. ITER (the International Thennonuclear Experimental Reactor, a joint venture of Europe, Japan, Russia, and the United States, presently under design) will need to measure a wide range of plasma parameters in order to reach and sustain high levels of fusion power. A list of the measurement requirements together with the parameter ranges, target measurement resolutions, and accuracies provides the starting point for selecting a list of candidate diagnostic systems.

Book excerpt: Spherical tokamaks, with their relatively low toroidal field, extend fast-ion-driven instability physics to parameter ranges not normally accessed in conventional tokamaks. The low field means that both the fast-ion Larmor radius normalized to the plasma minor radius and the ratio of the fast-ion velocity to the Alfven speed are relatively large. The large Larmor radius of the ions enhances their interaction with instability modes, influencing the structure of the unstable mode spectrum. The relatively large fast-ion velocity allows for a larger population of fast ions to be in resonance with the mode, increasing the drive. It is therefore an important goal of the present proof-of-principle spherical tokamaks to evaluate the role of fast-ion-driven instabilities in fast-ion confinement. This paper presents the first observations of fast-ion losses resulting from toroidal Alfven eigenmodes and a new, fishbone-like, energetic particle mode.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a pedagogical presentation of the application of spectral and pseudospectral methods to kinetic theory and quantum mechanics. There are additional applications to astrophysics, engineering, biology and many other fields. The main objective of this book is to provide the basic concepts to enable the use of spectral and pseudospectral methods to solve problems in diverse fields of interest and to a wide audience. While spectral methods are generally based on Fourier Series or Chebychev polynomials, non-classical polynomials and associated quadratures are used for many of the applications presented in the book. Fourier series methods are summarized with a discussion of the resolution of the Gibbs phenomenon. Classical and non-classical quadratures are used for the evaluation of integrals in reaction dynamics including nuclear fusion, radial integrals in density functional theory, in elastic scattering theory and other applications. The subject matter includes the calculation of transport coefficients in gases and other gas dynamical problems based on spectral and pseudospectral solutions of the Boltzmann equation. Radiative transfer in astrophysics and atmospheric science, and applications to space physics are discussed. The relaxation of initial non-equilibrium distributions to equilibrium for several different systems is studied with the Boltzmann and Fokker-Planck equations. The eigenvalue spectra of the linear operators in the Boltzmann, Fokker-Planck and Schrödinger equations are studied with spectral and pseudospectral methods based on non-classical orthogonal polynomials. The numerical methods referred to as the Discrete Ordinate Method, Differential Quadrature, the Quadrature Discretization Method, the Discrete Variable Representation, the Lagrange Mesh Method, and others are discussed and compared. MATLAB codes are provided for most of the numerical results reported in the book - see Link under 'Additional Information' on the the right-hand column.

We see a mountain and want to move it to carve out a path for ourselves. We see a river and want to tame it so that it irrigates our fields. We see a star and want to fly to its planets to secure a future for our progeny. For all this, we need a genie who will do our bidding at a flip of our fingers. Energy is such a genie. Modern humans need energy and lots of it to live a life of comfort. In fact, the quality of life in different regions of the world can be directly correlated with the per capita use of energy [1.1–1.5]. In this regard, the human development index (HDI) of various countries based on various reports by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) [1.6] (Fig. 1.1), which is a parameter measuring the quality of life in a given part of the world, is directly determined by the amount of per capita electricity consumption. Most of the developing world (~5 billion people) is crawling up the UN curve of HDI versus per capita electricity consumption, from abysmally low values of today towards the average of the whole world and eventually towards the average of the developed world. This translates into a massive energy hunger for the globe as a whole. It has been estimated that by the year 2050, the global electricity demand will go up by a factor of up to 3 in a high growth scenario [1.7–1.9]. The requirements beyond 2050 go up even higher.
