Book excerpt: A general-purpose test facility for determining the one-dimensional compression characteristics of soils subjected to impulse-type loads has been developed in order to help satisfy the ever-increasing demand for reliable soil-property data required in support of a wide variety of nuclear-weapons-effects-related problems. The design, fabrication, installation, and evaluation of the various elements which together comprise the test facility were accomplished. The various considerations involved in the design and evaluation of the newly developed test facility are discussed in detail, thus providing some insight into the types of factors which affect the experimental-accuracy capability of a one-dimensional compression test facility and thereby the reliability of the data obtained under any particular set of conditions. Book excerpt: Provides a thorough explanation of the basic properties of materials; of how these can be controlled by processing; of how materials are formed, joined and finished; and of the chain of reasoning that leads to a successful choice of material for a particular application. The materials covered are grouped into four classes: metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. Each class is studied in turn, identifying the families of materials in the class, the microstructural features, the processes or treatments used to obtain a particular structure and their design applications. The text is supplemented by practical case studies and example problems with answers, and a valuable programmed learning course on phase diagrams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behavior of sand in one-dimensional compression is investigated with both theoretical and experimental studies. The phenomenological aspects of one-dimensional behavior are discussed, such as stress-strain characteristics, energy absorption capacity, and coefficient of earth pressure at rest. The analytical study deals with the stress-strain relations of an idealized granular medium composed of elastic, equi-radii spheres in a face-centered cubic array. A new solution is derived for the behavior of the array when subjected to a monotonically increasing axial compressive stress for the comdition of zero radial strain. An experimental device is described which is capable of measuring the radial stresses developed in high-pressure, one-dimensional tests. Measurements of both the coefficient of earth pressure at rest and stressstrain properties are presented for four sands tested to an axial stress of 3,290 psi. Correlations are presented which compare the actual behavior of a rounded, uniform, quartz sand in one-dimensional and triaxial compression with the behavior suggested by the theoretical analysis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook offers a superb introduction to theoretical and practical soil mechanics. Special attention is given to the risks of failure in civil engineering, and themes covered include stresses in soils, groundwater flow, consolidation, testing of soils, and stability of slopes. Readers will learn the major principles and methods of soil mechanics, and the most important methods of determining soil parameters both in the laboratory and in situ. The basic principles of applied mechanics, that are frequently used, are offered in the appendices. The author’s considerable experience of teaching soil mechanics is evident in the many features of the book: it is packed with supportive color illustrations, helpful examples and references. Exercises with answers enable students to self-test their understanding and encourage them to explore further through additional online material. Numerous simple computer programs are provided online as Electronic Supplementary Material. As a soil mechanics textbook, this volume is ideally suited to supporting undergraduate civil engineering students. “I am really delighted that your book is now published. When I “discovered” your course a few years ago, I was elated to have finally found a book that immediately resonated with me. Your approach to teaching soil mechanics is precise, rigorous, clear, concise, or in other words “crisp." My colleagues who share the teaching of Soil Mechanics 1 and 2 (each course is taught every semester) at the UMN have also adopted your book.” Emmanuel Detournay Professor at Dept. of Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering, University of Minnesota, USA

Book excerpt: Effective measurement of the composition and properties of petroleum is essential for its exploration, production, and refining; however, new technologies and methodologies are not adequately documented in much of the current literature. Analytical Methods in Petroleum Upstream Applications explores advances in the analytical methods and instrumentation that allow more accurate determination of the components, classes of compounds, properties, and features of petroleum and its fractions. Recognized experts explore a host of topics, including: A petroleum molecular composition continuity model as a context for other analytical measurements A modern modular sampling system for use in the lab or the process area to collect and control samples for subsequent analysis The importance of oil-in-water measurements and monitoring The chemical and physical properties of heavy oils, their fractions, and products from their upgrading Analytical measurements using gas chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) applications Asphaltene and heavy ends analysis Chemometrics and modeling approaches for understanding petroleum composition and properties to improve upstream, midstream, and downstream operations Due to the renaissance of gas and oil production in North America, interest has grown in analytical methods for a wide range of applications. The understanding provided in this text is designed to help chemists, geologists, and chemical and petroleum engineers make more accurate estimates of the crude value to specific refinery configurations, providing insight into optimum development and extraction schemes.

This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the mechanical behavior of solids and contacts (interfaces and joints) is vital for the analysis, design, and maintenance of engineering systems. Materials may simultaneously experience the effects of many factors such as elastic, plastic, and creep strains; different loading (stress) paths; volume change under shear stress; and microcracking leading to fracture and failure, strain softening, or degradation. Typically, the available models account for only one factor at a time; however, the disturbed state concept (DSC) with the hierarchical single-surface (HISS) plasticity is a unified modeling approach that can allow for numerous factors simultaneously, and in an integrated manner. DSC/HISS Modeling Applications for Problems in Mechanics, Geomechanics, and Structural Mechanics provides readers with comprehensive information including the basic concepts and applications for the DSC/HISS modeling regarding a wide range of engineering materials and contacts. Uniformity in format and content of each chapter will make it easier for the reader to appreciate the potential of using the DSC/HISS modeling across various applications. Features: • Presents a new and simplified way to learn characterizations and behaviors of materials and contacts under various conditions • Offers modeling applicable to several different materials including geologic (clays, sands, rocks), modified geologic materials (structured soils, overconsolidated soils, expansive soils, loess, frozen soils, chemically treated soils), hydrate-bearing sediments, and more.

Volcanic rocks and soils contains keynote lectures and papers from the International Workshop held in Ischia (Italy), 24-25 September 2015. The book deals with recent developments and advancements, as well as case histories, in the geotechnical characterization and engineering applications related to volcanic formations. It covers a variety of themes, including: • Geotechnical characterization under both static and cyclic/dynamic loading conditions, with special regard to structural properties at different scales (microstructural features; field and laboratory characterization; construction materials); • Geotechnical aspects of natural hazards (slope stability; seismic risk); • Geotechnical problems of engineering structures (foundations; embankments; excavations and tunnels). Volcanic Rocks and Soils is of interest to scientists and practitioners in the fields of rock and soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering, engineering geology and geology.
