Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With perhaps 8,000 different species, beetles are easily the largest group of animals in California and can be found virtually everywhere in the state. They grapple over flower heads, lurk in pantries, paddle through pristine mountain streams, amble over dunes, and buzz about porch lights on warm evenings. But until now, there was no single resource for identifying the most commonly encountered beetles in California’s mountains, valleys, and deserts. This valuable field guide, a companion volume to Introduction to California Beetles published in 2004, identifies more than 500 of the state’s more conspicuous and colorful species, with the majority presented in stunning color photographs. Written and designed for amateur naturalists, students, and field biologists, it is chock-full of what every beetle watcher wants to know, including suggestions for finding beetles, starting a beetle collection, and keeping beetles in captivity. The informative, accessibly written species accounts include information on beetle identification, natural history, and distribution. * Features 300 color photographs, 110 drawings, and 2 maps * Covers 569 species in 56 families * Lists California’s sensitive, threatened, and endangered species * Provides resources and web sites for further study of California beetles

Download or read book Beetles of Western North America written by Arthur V. Evans and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Beetles are incredibly diverse, with over 23,000 named species in the United States alone. They take on all hues, shapes, and sizes, from the iridescent green of the Western Cedar Borer to the striking red of the Rose Curculio. They can also be found in a wide range of habitats, from cold mountain streams to scorching deserts. Similar to its eastern counterpart, Beetles of Eastern North America, this book is a comprehensive guide to the beetles of the US and Canada that can be found west of the Continental Divide. It covers over 1,400 species across 130 different families. The book begins with a general introduction to beetles, with sections on morphology, behavior and natural history, and conservation, as well as information on how to find and photograph beetles. After the introduction, there is an illustrated key to common beetle families. The family descriptions include information on natural history, collection, identification, common genera and species, and similar families"--

This book was released on 2012-05-02 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on examination of more than 6,600 adult specimens, this work treats the Nearctic fauna of Eustrophinae (Tetratomidae), a relatively obscure, but potentially ecologically significant, group of beetles associated with wood-rotting fungi in most forest ecosystems. Five genera and 12 species are recognized: Pseudoholostrophus (Pseudoholostrophus) impressicollis (LeConte), P. (Holostrophinus) discolor (Horn), Holostrophus bifasciatus (Say), Eustrophus tomentosus Say, Eustrophopsis confinis (LeConte), E. bicolor (Fabricius), E. brunneimarginatus (Dury), E. indistinctus (LeConte), E. arizonensis (Horn), E. ornatus (Van Dyke), and Synstrophus repandus (Horn). A new species, Eustrophopsis crowdyi is described from southern Arizona. An identification key, supplemented with color photographs of the body (dorsal and lateral), frontal view of head, prosternal process and other structural features, is presented. Distribution maps of known geographical ranges in Canada and the United States (and Mexico for three southern species) are included, supplemented by detailed locality data. In addition to the taxonomic analyses, preliminary comments are made on the biogeography of the Nearctic Eustrophinae, as well as their natural history and ecological importance in forest habitats.

The First Edition has been widely used as a textbook and this Second Edition should continue to serve students in advanced classes. The Second Edition features expanded and updated chapters, especially with respect to the cited references and the classification of North American freshwater invertebrates. New chapters or substantially revised chapters include those on freshwater ecosystems, snails, aquatic spiders, aquatic insects, and crustaceans. - Most up-to-date and informative text of its kind - Written by experts in the ecology of various invertebrate groups, coverage emphasizes ecological information within a current taxonomic framework - Each chapter contains both morphological and taxonomic information, including keys to North American taxa (usually to the generic level) as well as bibliographic information and a list of further readings - The text is geared toward researchers and advanced undergraduate and graduate students
Book Synopsis Hydraenidae (Coleoptera) by : Michael Hansen
Download or read book Hydraenidae (Coleoptera) written by Michael Hansen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-14 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerns about global biodiversity are rising dramatically, yet we are lagging behind in the most basic prerequisite for its understanding and conservation: the inventory. Insect species may make up five or ten times the number of all other plant and animal species combined, and as such they represent one of the major challenges in biosystematic science. World Catalogue of Insects is an initiative aiming at compiling worldscale, authoritative catalogues of monophyletic insect taxa. We are therefore proud to launch this major series. Volumes will as a minimum contain standard nomenclatoral information on all names pertaining to the taxon treated, including type locality and distribution to the extent this is relevant. Additional information is optional, e. g., location, status and condition of types; biology; bibliographical information; pest status; vector status; etc. This volume one focuses on Hydraenidae (Coleoptera).
