Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Bee Journal, Vol. 9: July, 1873 How much interest was felt in relation to the cause which occasioned the disastrous losses of our bees in the winter of 1871 - 2, and yet but few, if any of us, were prepared for the fact that, the winter which has just closed, (that of '72 and would far surpass the previous one in point of fatality, even, in many instances, devastating entire apiaries; and I greatly regret to state that, in a radius of fifty miles from the point at which I write, that from one-half to two-thirds of our colonies have perished. I feared last fall that, in the absence of proper management, this loss would occur, and so I predicted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1872 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER n. NATURAL SWARMING. The swarming season is one of unusual interest to the beekeeper. He hopes soon to commence his annual harvest both of swarms and surplus honey. The issue of natural swarms is almost wholly dependent upon continued warm growing weather. June is the great swarming month in the northern States. Yet, when the spring is unusually favorable, we get an occasional swarm as early as the middle of May, and many about the last of that month. Again, swarming may not commence until July. Bees will often rear drones, construct queen cells, and be just on ihe point of swarming, when a few days of bad weather will cause the drones and embryo queens to be destroyed, and swarming to be postponed indefinitely. As much time must be spent in preparation when this occurs, it will require several weeks before swarms can issue, though the weather be never so favorable. Bees, like some human beings, seem most discontented when most prosperous. If the season is favorable, the May flowers will scarcely have appeared till the swarming fever begins instinctively to steal over the colony, affecting equally, perhaps, both queen and workers. The first step of preparation taken is the rearing of drones, by an early deposit of eggs in the drone cells by the queen. As these mature and the "lusty fellows" throng the entrance, if the weather is warm and pastuiage abundant, a few queen cells will be commenced at different times by the workers. These, in most cases, are suspended from the edgea or inequalities of the combs, with their open end downward. From three to ten queen cells are commonly constructed, and the egg or larvae, is lavishly supplied with "royal jelly," a pungent, stimulating, light cream-colored substance, when the cell is...

"Sports" and "variations" occur, producing inferior progeny; but all careful breeders who have an eye to the improvement of the race reject those that do not come up to the "standard of excellence," sending such animals and poultry to the shambles--so let us carefully select the best queens and drones to breed from. Length of Tongues The length of the tongue (Fig. 13) of the honey-bee is an important matter in her make-up, as there are some blossoms, such as red clover, which have so long a corolla that the average bee cannot reach their nectar. The Cyprian bee is said to have a longer tongue than other races, but its cross disposition renders it unfit for general domestication. The Italians have often furnished strains that harvested nectar from red clover during the second crop of that plant, and in very dry seasons, from the first crop. For that reason, we strongly recommend the Italians over any other race. The Italian Bees 123. Briefly stated, their superiority is thus demonstrated: 1. They have longer tongues and gather honey from flowers where black bees cannot. 2. They are more industrious and persevering, and with the same opportunity gather much more than black bees. 3. They work earlier and later in the day as well as in the season, often gathering stores when the blacks are idle. 4. They are better to guard their hives against robbers (84), and against the ravages of the bee-moth's larvfe (214). 5. They are more prolific in the spring. 6. Their bees and queen adhere more tenaciously to the comb. 7. They are amiable, and it is easy to manipulate them. There are other races of bees which are desirable, and among them we will mention the Caucasian and the Carniolan, but as both of...

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ...The diversity of conditions in this region is well shown in the accompanying map (Fig. 95), which was prepared by E. G. Baldwin, De Land, Florida, who has studied the beekeeping possibilities of his State quite thoroughly. It will be seen that the sources of nectar are quite distinct geographically. The geographical position of this State and the diversity of soil and climatic conditions strongly influence the growth of the honey plants. In this State two localities only a few miles apart may be quite unlike, when viewed from the standpoint of the beekeeper. This is also true in many other parts of the United States. (4) The semi-arid region of the south-west is located chiefly in the arid and semi-arid parts of Texas and Arizona and here too the honey plants are of somewhat restricted distribution. Among the plants which are important to the beekeeper are mesquite, horsemint, catclaw, huisache and guajilla. Most of the honey produced in this region is extracted, although a large number of beekeepers produce bulk combhoney (chunk honey), cut from large combs (without sections) and placed in cans in which extracted-honey has been poured to fill the spaces. Such honey is usually sold locally. Beekeeping in this region is largely in the hands of professional beekeepers. (5) The sage region is confined to the canons of southern California and should be considered a restricted region except for the fact that sage honey wields so important an influence on the honey market that the region may justly be placed among those of major importance. The various sages are all heavy yielders under favorable conditions and there is usually no other honey source of importance where this honey is produced. The influence of rainfall on the honey crop of this...
