Book excerpt: Leaving the lavender fields of Provence behind him, a young man sets off on a journey that will lead him all the way to Africa where deep in the interior, he discovers the mysterious Land of the Bees. Among those he encounters on his way are a penniless painter who bears more than a striking resemblance to Van Gogh, a dishevelled wanderer who could only be Rimbaud, and finally a woman with skin the colour of honey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1973, tens of thousands of first-time and experienced beekeepers alike have relied on The Beekeeper's Handbook as the best single-volume guide to the hobby and profession of beekeeping. Featuring clear descriptions and authoritative content, this handbook provides step-by-step directions accompanied by more than 100 illustrations for setting up an apiary, handling bees, and working throughout the season to maintain a healthy colony of bees and a generous supply of honey. This book explains the various colony care options and techniques, noting advantages and disadvantages, so that beekeepers can make the best choices for their own hives. This fourth edition has been thoroughly redesigned, expanded, updated, and revised to incorporate the latest information on Colony Collapse Disorder, green IPM methods, regional overwintering protocols, and procedures for handling bees and managing diseases and pests such as African honey bees and bee mites. The book explains not only how but also why each step is part of the transformative process that results in the magnificent creation of honey. This essential guide is a beekeeper's most valuable resource. Colony Collapse Disorder has renewed our recognition of the importance of small-scale beekeeping and the critical role of bees in the production of our food supply. For the growing number of beekeepers looking to set up hives for either a rewarding hobby or a profitable commercial enterprise, this updated and revised essential how-to guide includes: step-by-step directions for all stages from setting up an apiary to harvesting honey; approximately 100 illustrations featuring techniques, equipment, and bee biology; information about how to manage new pests and diseases including Colony Collapse Disorder; coverage of new trends and changes in beekeeping including green IPM techniques and new laws for urban beekeeping; the most up-to-date bibliography and list of resources on the topic; and a new user-friendly book design that clearly highlights instructions and other important features.

Book excerpt: The Beekeeper's Bible is as much an ultimate guide to the practical essentials of beekeeping as it is a beautiful almanac to be read from cover to cover. Part history book, part handbook, and part cookbook, this illustrated tome covers every facet of the ancient hobby of beekeeping, from how to manage hives safely to harvesting one's own honey, and ideas for how to use honey and beeswax. Detailed instructions for making candles, furniture polish, beauty products, and nearly 100 honey-themed recipes are included. Fully illustrated with how-to photography and unique etchings, any backyard enthusiast or gardener can confidently dive into beekeeping with this book in hand (or daydream about harvesting their own honey while relaxing in the comfort of an armchair). Praise for The Beekeeper's Bible "Jones and Sweeney-Lynch explain the science and society of bees in clear, accessible language. And the recipes are admirably useful: honey scones, honey soap, honey hangover cures. 'Oh, stuff and fluff, ' as Pooh might say. Dip a paw into this richly satisfying volume and you won't have to do stoutness exercises." -The New York Times "Lip-smackin' throughout, The Beekeeper's Bible is, at its heart, a glorious invitation into the depths of the honeybee hive." --Chicago Tribune "An elegant, information-packed addition to the library of the most serious beekeeper." --Better Homes & Gardens Country Gardens "An amazing compendium of information, lore, facts, tips, techniques, and benefits of having bees in your life--whether you choose to keep a hive yourself, enjoy the by-products, or just appreciate these wonderful creatures for all that they contribute to our human ecosystem." --About.com

The swarming season is one of unusual interest to the beekeeper. He hopes soon to commence his annual harvest both of swarms and surplus honey. The issue of natural swarms is almost wholly dependent upon continued warm growing weather. June is the great swarming month in the northern States. Yet, when the spring is unusually favorable, we get an occasional swarm as early as the middle of May, and many about the last of that month. Again, swarming may not commence until July. Bees will often rear drones, construct queen cells, and be just on ihe point of swarming, when a few days of bad weather will cause the drones and embryo queens to be destroyed, and swarming to be postponed indefinitely. As much time must be spent in preparation when this occurs, it will require several weeks before swarms can issue, though the weather be never so favorable. Bees, like some human beings, seem most discontented when most prosperous. If the season is favorable, the May flowers will scarcely have appeared till the swarming fever begins instinctively to steal over the colony, affecting equally, perhaps, both queen and workers. The first step of preparation taken is the rearing of drones, by an early deposit of eggs in the drone cells by the queen. As these mature and the "lusty fellows" throng the entrance, if the weather is warm and pastuiage abundant, a few queen cells will be commenced at different times by the workers. These, in most cases, are suspended from the edgea or inequalities of the combs, with their open end downward. From three to ten queen cells are commonly constructed, and the egg or larvae, is lavishly supplied with "royal jelly," a pungent, stimulating, light cream-colored substance, when the cell is...

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1921 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VIII WINTERING Beekeepers annually sustain a heavier loss from cold than is generally supposed. In fact the loss is probably much greater than even the beekeepers themselves realize. The actual colony loss for the United States is said to be more than ten per cent. and it is thought to be no exaggeration to say that the actual bee loss is near fifty per cent. The fact that a colony of bees is alive in the spring really means very little as far as success is concerned. There may be enough bees in the hive to conduct business as usual but they will not be numerous enough to prove profitable to their owner when the honey flow comes on. Really successful wintering means, or should mean, that the bees live through with but little loss of individuals and in a strong healthy condition so that they will start promptly to rear the young bees for the next honey harvest. It is understood, of course, that all of the old bees that winter over die before the next active field season arrives. They serve only to start the new generation, but unless they are strong in numbers as well as in body they will fail in this very important function. The subject of proper wintering has perhaps produced as much discussion as any other one phase of beekeeping--and that is stating the case about as strongly as possible, for beekeepers are prone to discuss their troubles and success with all the avidity of an invalid at a health resort. Through all of this historic discussion run a great many references to the "winter sleep" of the bees. They are spoken of as animals which become dormant in the cold season and pass into a hibernating state similar to that enjoyed by the bears and other animals which curl up under an old stump and lose both consciousness and...

This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why write a book about bees for small children? Reference to "birds and bees" has been used for years as a Victorian euphemism for sex education, yet there is more ignorance about the biology of bees than human reproduction and of their vital role in food production. Where better to start than with the education of children? Years of talking to children of all ages at shows and in school classrooms have yielded abundant evidence that children are interested and feed-back from teachers and children is particularly encouraging. The greatest rewards when demonstrating live bees in a show case at public functions is seeing the eager faces and enquiring eyes of small children as they gaze in wonder at the bees and hearing their searching questions; questions often more basic than those posed by adults and more difficult to answer in terms meaningful to a child. Referring to bees in a display case a typical such question is, "How do you get the bees in there"? Presuming that the poor kids envisage the beekeeper going from flower to flower picking up the bees one by one and putting them in the case, how does one explain about beehives and frames of bees in a brief few minutes and in a language understandable by a small child? Another challenge has arisen several times. After explaining that the worker bees are all female, all the work being done by the girls, the question came, "How do you know they are female?" How do you answer a question such as this factually and in terms a five or six year old can understand? It is gratifying that beekeepers are asked to talk to schools and to know that the subject finds a place in curricula. There are already many books on beekeeping and in this age of the internet, when even children have access via mobile phone, tablet or computer, is there a need for a book specifically devoted to them? The project was embarked upon in the belief that there will always be a place for the written word, for a book which parents can read to small children or for older children to curl up with and read or refer to off the shelf. This is a small introductory book directed to young age groups. Another for older age groups, high school teenagers, is wider ranging with attention to the biology of bees and more detail about beekeeping.

Book excerpt: Index; Why keep BeesThe HiveBee BusinessHow to get the beesHive ManagementBee DiseasesHoney PlantsWinteringThe beginner in any field is always more or less at sea. There are always lit- tle, fundamental things that he wants to know and too often these same little things are the most difficult to discover. Often, too, when a man learns enough of any one subject to write a book about it, he forgets or overlooks some of the fundamental things that he learned in his own beginnings and as a result assumes that his readers know as much about his subject as he does himself. In this little book I have tried to keep in mind my own troubles when I first started to cultivate the festive bee. I then knew the creatures only as an ento- mologist would know them. To me they were merely a species of insect having certain anatomical characters. I knew their life-history in a perfunctory way, but when it came to real knowledge of their habits, I had none. But for the kindly help of the man to whom this volume is dedicated my flound- erings would have been prolonged and I would have accumulated information as I accumulated stings - ^by a painful process. A book of this size does not and can not claim to tell all there is to know on the subject of beekeeping in spite of its title. The subject is a big one and it has many sides. The beekeeper must be content to be a student, learning a little each year and with the consolation that men have spent their lives in the study only to leave many unsolved problems behind them. If the little book serves as an introduc- tion to the fascinating business of keeping bees and if it guides the steps of its read- ers in the right direction it has fulfilled its purpose. The writer has had no other object in view. B. W. D

It concentrates on the 'why', 'how' and 'when' of beekeeping. It explains bee basics in a manner meaningful to people who lack an intensive background in biology. It does not oversimplify, and provides a meaningful source of beekeeping information for the new and informed beekeeper. Widely considered the most complete beekeeping textbook, covering a vast array of topics of bee biology and colony management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will help beekeepers understand the fundamentals of beekeeping science. Written in plain and accessible language by actual researchers, it should be part of every beekeeper’s library. The respective chapters not only present raw data; they also explain how to read and understand the most common figures. With topics ranging from honeybee nutrition to strains of Varroa resistant bees, from the effects of pesticide chemicals to understanding diseases, and including a discussion of venom allergies, the book provides essential “knowhow” that beekeepers will benefit from every time they inspect their hives. Further, each chapter ends with the author explaining how beekeepers can (or cannot) directly utilize the information to enhance their beekeeping operation. The text is structured to facilitate ease of use, with each author addressing the same four issues: 1) What are the specific purposes or goals of these experiments? Or more simply: what have these studies taught us? 2) How should a non-scientist read the data generated? 3) What are the key points in relation to practicing beekeepers’ goals? 4) How can the data or techniques discussed be applied by beekeepers in their own apiaries? This approach allows readers to look up specific information quickly, understand it and even put it to use without having to read entire chapters. Further, the chapters are highly readable and concise. As such, the book offers a valuable guide and faithful companion for all beekeepers, one they can use day in and day out.
