The swarming season is one of unusual interest to the beekeeper. He hopes soon to commence his annual harvest both of swarms and surplus honey. The issue of natural swarms is almost wholly dependent upon continued warm growing weather. June is the great swarming month in the northern States. Yet, when the spring is unusually favorable, we get an occasional swarm as early as the middle of May, and many about the last of that month. Again, swarming may not commence until July. Bees will often rear drones, construct queen cells, and be just on ihe point of swarming, when a few days of bad weather will cause the drones and embryo queens to be destroyed, and swarming to be postponed indefinitely. As much time must be spent in preparation when this occurs, it will require several weeks before swarms can issue, though the weather be never so favorable. Bees, like some human beings, seem most discontented when most prosperous. If the season is favorable, the May flowers will scarcely have appeared till the swarming fever begins instinctively to steal over the colony, affecting equally, perhaps, both queen and workers. The first step of preparation taken is the rearing of drones, by an early deposit of eggs in the drone cells by the queen. As these mature and the "lusty fellows" throng the entrance, if the weather is warm and pastuiage abundant, a few queen cells will be commenced at different times by the workers. These, in most cases, are suspended from the edgea or inequalities of the combs, with their open end downward. CHAPTER VIII WINTERING Beekeepers annually sustain a heavier loss from cold than is generally supposed. In fact the loss is probably much greater than even the beekeepers themselves realize. The actual colony loss for the United States is said to be more than ten per cent. and it is thought to be no exaggeration to say that the actual bee loss is near fifty per cent. The fact that a colony of bees is alive in the spring really means very little as far as success is concerned. There may be enough bees in the hive to conduct business as usual but they will not be numerous enough to prove profitable to their owner when the honey flow comes on. Really successful wintering means, or should mean, that the bees live through with but little loss of individuals and in a strong healthy condition so that they will start promptly to rear the young bees for the next honey harvest. It is understood, of course, that all of the old bees that winter over die before the next active field season arrives. They serve only to start the new generation, but unless they are strong in numbers as well as in body they will fail in this very important function. The subject of proper wintering has perhaps produced as much discussion as any other one phase of beekeeping--and that is stating the case about as strongly as possible, for beekeepers are prone to discuss their troubles and success with all the avidity of an invalid at a health resort. Through all of this historic discussion run a great many references to the "winter sleep" of the bees. Years of talking to children of all ages at shows and in school classrooms have yielded abundant evidence that children are interested and feed-back from teachers and children is particularly encouraging. The greatest rewards when demonstrating live bees in a show case at public functions is seeing the eager faces and enquiring eyes of small children as they gaze in wonder at the bees and hearing their searching questions; questions often more basic than those posed by adults and more difficult to answer in terms meaningful to a child. Referring to bees in a display case a typical such question is, "How do you get the bees in there"? Presuming that the poor kids envisage the beekeeper going from flower to flower picking up the bees one by one and putting them in the case, how does one explain about beehives and frames of bees in a brief few minutes and in a language understandable by a small child? Another challenge has arisen several times. After explaining that the worker bees are all female, all the work being done by the girls, the question came, "How do you know they are female?" How do you answer a question such as this factually and in terms a five or six year old can understand? It is gratifying that beekeepers are asked to talk to schools and to know that the subject finds a place in curricula. There are already many books on beekeeping and in this age of the internet, when even children have access via mobile phone, tablet or computer, is there a need for a book specifically devoted to them? The project was embarked upon in the belief that there will always be a place for the written word, for a book which parents can read to small children or for older children to curl up with and read or refer to off the shelf. This is a small introductory book directed to young age groups. Another for older age groups, high school teenagers, is wider ranging with attention to the biology of bees and more detail about beekeeping.
