Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once upon a time, I thought love was a fairytale. I thought selling myself to a mafia boss was noble. So what if they called him the Beast? I grew up in rags, and he would lift me to riches. All I had to do was give him my soul. He was punishing. Insatiable. Captivating. Nothing like I expected him to be. Each day my reality blurred, leaving me wondering if I was slave or princess. The longer I stayed, the more I lost myself to him. Even after every cruelty the Beast visited upon me, I longed for his touch. Even after every savage word he spoke, I begged for his lips. I thought the worst thing he could take was my body. I was too naïve to guard my heart. Once upon a time, I thought love was a fairytale. Now I know better than to speak of happily ever afters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A freed slave's daring assertion of the evils of slavery Born in present-day Ghana, Quobna Ottobah Cugoano was kidnapped at the age of thirteen and sold into slavery by his fellow Africans in 1770; he worked in the brutal plantation chain gangs of the West Indies before being freed in England. His Thoughts and Sentiments on the Evil of Slavery is the most direct criticism of slavery by a writer of African descent. Cugoano refutes pro-slavery arguments of the day, including slavery's supposed divine sanction; the belief that Africans gladly sold their own families into slavery; that Africans were especially suited to its rigors; and that West Indian slaves led better lives than European serfs. Exploiting his dual identity as both an African and a British citizen, Cugoano daringly asserted that all those under slavery's yoke had a moral obligation to rebel, while at the same time he appealed to white England's better self. Book excerpt: From Slave to Separate but Equal: The Constitution, Slave Capitalism, Human Rights & Civil War Reckoning is a secret history of the United States, not taught in schools, about Economic, Social and Political effects of Protestant slavery. included in the Constitution, denying citizenship to Blacks resulting in a Civil War reckoning with a million casualties. From Slave to Separate but Equal challenges the assumption that the Civil War was fought to end black slavery. Author Paul Kalra presents a convincing argument that by far the bloodiest war the U.S. has waged could have been avoided had slaveholders adopted the Catholic slave code, which recognized the humanity of slaves. By adopting the Protestant slave code and framing it into an undemocratic Constitution, slaveholders created distinct slaveholder and non-slaveholder classes, and denied Blacks citizenship. This inevitably led to economic and political dilemmas that became insurmountable once immigrants flooded the slave-free North and Lincoln was elected President.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filmatized in 2013 and the official recipient of three Oscars, Solomon Northup's powerful slave narrative 'Twelve Years a Slave' depicts Nortup's life as he is sold into slavery after having spent 32 years of his life living as a free man in New York. Working as a travelling musician, Northup goes to Washington D.C, where he is kidnapped, sent to New Orleans, and sold to a planter to suffer the relentless and brutal life of a slave. After a dozen years, Northup escapes to return to his family and pulls no punches, as he describes his fate and that of so many other black people at the time. It is a harrowing but vitally important book, even today. For further reading on this subject, try 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Solomon Northup (c.1807-c.1875) was an American abolitionist and writer, best remembered for his powerful race memoir 'Twelve Years a Slave'. At the age of 32, when he was a married farmer, father-of-three, violinist and free-born man, he was kidnapped in Washington D.C and shipped to New Orleans, sold to a planter and enslaved for a dozen years. When he gained his freedom, he wrote his famous memoir and spent some years lecturing across the US,on behalf of the abolitionist movement. 'Twelve Years a Slave' was published a year after 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' by Harriet Beecher Stowe and built on the anti-slavery momentum it had developed. Northup's final years are something of a mystery, though it is thought that he struggled to cope with family life after being freed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustine's City of God has profoundly influenced the course of Western political philosophy, but there are few guides to its labyrinthine argumentation that hold together the delicate interplay of religion and philosophy in Augustine's thought. The essays in this volume offer a rich examination of those themes, using the central, contested distinction between a heavenly city on earthly pilgrimage and an earthly city bound for perdition to elaborate aspects of Augustine's political and moral vision. Topics discussed include Augustine's notion of the secular, his critique of pagan virtue, his departure from classical eudaimonism, his mythology of sin, his dystopian politics, his surprising attention to female bodies, his moral psychology, his valorisation of love, his critique of empire and his conception of a Christian philosophy. Together the essays advance our understanding of Augustine's most influential work and provide a rich overview of Augustinian political theology and its philosophical implications.

Yet his purpose in life, is all too clear. He will fight, and die, for Bospor. After sixteen winters, all warrior slaves must attempt the brutal test to enter 'Sovek'. Only there can they die with honour, defending the northern border against the savage horsemen of the Scythian Empire. Those who fail, face a grim alternative. They will be taken to the city, so the free people of Bospor can watch them die in the arena. Either way, for all warrior slaves, life is short and death is certain. But Clay is different! The shackles of slavery cannot contain his strength, and the tight grip of tyranny will not break his spirit. He is unstoppable....he will carve his own destiny.

Book excerpt: A monstrous alien race attempts to conquer the Earth-like planet of Gor, where men are warriors and women are sex slaves. The fight for survival on the primitive, Earth-like world Gor continues with a ferocity that matches the rest of the series. On Gor, there are three different kinds of beings that are labeled beasts: the Kurii, a monster alien race that is preparing to invade Gor from space; Gorean warriors, who fight with viciousness almost primitive in its bloodlust; and then there are the slave girls of Gor, lowly beasts for men to treat as they see fit, be it as objects of labor or desire. Now all three come together as the Kurii fight to take over Gor with its first beachhead on the planet’s polar ice cap. As all three kinds of beasts struggle together, an incredible adventure is told, one that begins in lands of burning heat and ends up in the bitter cold of the polar north among the savage red hunters of the polar ice pack. Rediscover this brilliantly imagined world where men are masters and women live to serve their every desire. Beasts of Gor is the 12th book in the Gorean Saga, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.
