Book excerpt: Did alligators ever really live in New York's sewers? What's it like to explore the old aqueducts beneath the city? How many levels are beneath Grand Central Station? And how exactly did the pneumatic tube system that New York's post offices used to employ work? In this richly illustrated historical tour of New York's vast underground systems, Julia Solis answers all these questions and much, much more. New York Underground takes readers through ingenious criminal escape routes, abandoned subway stations, and dark crypts beneath lower Manhattan to expose the city's basic anatomy. While the city is justly famous for what lies above ground, its underground passages are equally legendary and tell us just as much about how the city works.

Book excerpt: With over 60 per cent of the world’s population living in cities, the networks beneath our feet – which keep the cities above moving – are more important than ever before. Yet we never truly see how these amazing feats of engineering work. Just how deep do the tunnels go? Where do the sewers, bunkers and postal trains run? And, how many tunnels are there under our streets? Each featured city presents a ‘skyline of the underground’ through specially commissioned cut-away illustrations and unique cartography. Drawing on geography, cartography and historical oddities, Mark Ovenden explores what our cities look like from the bottom up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the merger of New York City and lower Westchester in 1874, there was a heightened interest in extending rapid transit lines across the Harlem River into this new section of the city. The newly acquired land was a mixture of hamlets, towns, villages, and farms on the fringes of urban development. There was great potential for economic growth. But it wasnt until 1882 when the first company was formed to provide transit service to what was to become the Borough of the Bronx. Continuation of elevated lines from Manhattan provided a suitable and adequate method of traveling to and from the city. This stimulated construction plans and many residential and commercial buildings arose dramatically along the routes. Here was material for a thrilling drama! Suddenly, rapid transit transformed dozens of sleepy, rural, unrelated communities into vibrant, cohesive, growing neighborhoods, itching for investment and economic development. Here is a history replete with flashes of genius as well a sordid spirit of greed. There were battles, schemes, and high ambitions, but in the end, great things were achieved. Our present generation can pay tribute to that remote past which gave us the city we know today.
Book Synopsis The Real World of Victorian Steampunk by : Simon Webb
Download or read book The Real World of Victorian Steampunk written by Simon Webb and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at the surprising nineteenth-century technology that inspires this literary and cultural movement: “I was very impressed by this book.” —SF Crowsnest In recent decades, steampunk has grown from a rather obscure subgenre of science fiction into a striking and distinctive style of fashion, art, design, and even music. It is in the written word, however, that steampunk has its roots—and in this book Simon Webb explores and examines the real inventions that underpin the fantasy. In doing so, he reveals a world unknown to most people today. Webb reveals the Victorian era as a surprising place: one of steam-powered airplanes, fax machines linking Moscow and St Petersburg, steam cars traveling at over 100 mph, electric taxis, and wireless telephones. It is, in short, the nineteenth century as you’ve never before seen it—a steampunk extravaganza of anachronistic technology and unfamiliar gadgets. Imagine Europe spanned by a mechanical internet, a telecommunication system of clattering semaphore towers capable of transmitting information across the continent in a matter of minutes. Consider too, the fact that a steam plane the size of a modern airliner took off in England in 1894. Drawing entirely on contemporary sources, we see how little-known developments in technology have been used as the basis for so many steampunk narratives. From seminal novels such as The Difference Engine to the steampunk fantasy of Terry Pratchett’s later works, this book shows that steampunk is at least as much solid fact as it is whimsical fiction.
