Book excerpt: Most of the earlier solutions for residual stresses were based on the assumption of elastic unloading and only a few considered reverse yielding. In this report a new theoretical model for a high strength steel is proposed and a closed-form solution for calculating residual stresses in autofrettaged tubes has been obtained. The new results indicate that the influence of the combined Bauschinger and hardening effects on the residual stress distribution is significant.

In this report, the prediction of residual stresses for the case of reverse yielding including the combined Baushinger and hardening effect will be reported for an autofrettaged thick-walled cylinder. The Bauschinger effect factor is varying as a function of overstrain. The strain-hardening effect is considered with different parameters used for loading and unloading process. The new results indicate that the influence of the combined Bauschinger and hardening effect on residual stress distribution is significant. (Author).

Book excerpt: This work addresses the influence of Bauschinger effect upon residual stresses and associated fatigue lifetimes for pressurized, autofrettaged thick cylinders. The model employed allows for the variation with radius of Bauschinger Effect Factor (BEF) thoughout the autofrettaged tube since the percentage plastic strain, which determines BEF, will vary from a maximum value at the bore to zero at the elastic-plastic interface.

Book excerpt: In the swage autofrettage process, partial autofrettage was achieved by driving an oversized mandrel through the cylinders to cause plastic deformation. In this work, we made experimental and theoretical investigations of residual stresses in a swaged asymmetric thick-walled cylinder with small wall variations. Hoop and radial residual stress distributions, as well as angular hoop stress variations at the inside and outside diameter of the cylinder, were determined by using a single-exposure position-sensitive scintillation x-ray diffraction detection system. Our experimental results were in good agreement with the residual stress distributions predicted from Tresca's hydraulic autofrettage model. Deviations of hoop residual stress at the bore may be attributed to Bauschinger's effect. Finite element analysis using ABAQUS code on a Convex supercomputer was used to model the swage autofrettage process. Small angular residual stress variations were predicted due to the eccentricity of the cylinder. The finite element model predictions of residual stress distribution were in general agreement with experimental results except near the bore. Preliminary results of an alternative finite element method showed a reduced compressive hoop stress near the bore, similar to the results obtained by assuming Bauschinger's effect. Book excerpt: Experimental and theoretical investigations were made for swage autofrettage partially plastic ASTM A723 steel cylinders with an outside diameter (OD) to inside diameter (ID) ratio of 2.75 and 74 percent overstrain. Residual stress radial distribution and angular stress distribution around the bore were analyzed using two position-sensitive x-ray diffraction stress analyzers. Theoretical calculation was made by implementing an interactive, iterative Lotus Works spreadsheet residual stress model on an IBM PC. The model was based on the classical solution to the elastic-plastic deformation problem of a symmetric thick walled cylinder under internal pressure, including reverse yielding effect. Angular stress distribution data at the ID and OD indicated that non-axisymmetric deformation had occurred during yielding of the cylinders. Excellent agreement was obtained between experimental results and theoretical predictions, including the Bauschinger effect near the bore. By comparing experimental data with theoretical calculations for the 74 percent overstrained cylinders, the Bauschinger factor for the A723 steel was determined to be close to 0.5. Residual stress analysis for the entire cylinder is suggested in the future. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autofrettage is a process which increases the ability of a thick-walled cylinder to contain internal pressure without undergoing plastic deformation by means of producing a system of favorable residual stresses in the cylinder. If material is removed from the cylinder after autofrettage, some of these residual stresses will be removed. This report presents the results of an experimental study of the effect of material removal on the elastic strength of autofrettaged cylinders. The test specimens used were one inch bore diameter cylinders, ranging in diameter ratio from 1.4 to 2.4, of a modified 4330 steel with a yield strength of about 160,000 psi. The specimens were autofrettaged by internal hydrostatic pressure to the complete overstrain condition, thermally treated and machined on either the inside or outside surface. They were then pressure tested to determine their re-yield pressure. The results are compared with those predicted by various theories. Significant differences are noted and are explained in terms of material behavioral phenomena such as the Bauschinger effect and strain aging. (author).

Book excerpt: The International Conference on Mechanical Design and Production has over the years established itself as an excellent forum for the exchange of ideas in these established fields. The first of these conferences was held in 1979. The seventh, and most recent, conference in the series was held in Cairo during February 15-17, 2000. International engineers and scientists gathered to exchange experiences and highlight the state-of-the-art research in the fields of mechanical design and production. In addition a heavy emphasis was placed on the issue of technology transfer. Over 100 papers were accepted for presentation at the conference. Current Advances in Mechanical Design & Production VII does not, however, attempt to publish the complete work presented but instead offers a sample that represents the quality and breadth of both the work and the conference. Ten invited papers and 54 ordinary papers have been selected for inclusion in these proceedings. They cover a range of basic and applied topics that can be classified into six main categories: System Dynamics, Solid Mechanics, Material Science, Manufacturing Processes, Design and Tribology, and Industrial Engineering and its Applications.

Book excerpt: Pressure Vessel Technology, Volume 3 reviews the practices and trends in pressure vessel technology. This book discusses the tremendous progress in the various fields of pressure vessel technology, including fabrication techniques, ferrous materials, and life expectancy to assure structural integrity. Organized into 11 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the fabrication techniques in pressure vessel technology. This text then examines the requirements of the chemical industry for the prevention of catastrophic failure of pressure components. Other chapters consider the major development of pressure vessels for special purposes, high pressure vessels, materials for making pressure vessels, and pressure vessel codes. This book discusses as well the seismic design in the field of pressure vessels and pipings. The final chapter deals with buckling resistance under seismic motions for thin-walled cylindrical vessels, of which predominant mode of failure is shear buckling and bending under horizontal earthquake loadings. This book is a valuable resource for mechanical engineers, project managers, and scientists.

Book excerpt: There is a long-standing interest in developing a capability to predict the distribution of residual stresses in thick-wall tubes after internal pressurization--autofrettage. Since autofrettage involves partial or full plastic deformation of the tube, any computation of stress under pressure and, hence of the post-pressurization residual stresses, depends upon the assumed yield criterion. The latter may or may not include the material's strain hardening and/or strain softening capabilities. The most commonly used criteria are those named after Tresca and Mises. In the absence of exact solutions for plastic deformations, simplifying assumptions concerning the material's behavior are being made for the development of workable solutions, sometimes with the knowledge that certain physical principles are being violated. Many suggested solutions to the problem of autofrettage assume that Tresca's yield criterion prevails. Recent attempts to treat a 'modified Tresca's yield criterion' as Mises' yield criterion and/or attempts to add strain-softening (Bauschinger effect) to Tresca's yield criterion are questioned in this report. Keywords: Thick walled tubing, Pressurization, Autofrettage, Mises' yield criterion, Tresca's yield criterion, Elastic-plastic deformation, Retained stresses. (EDC).

Book excerpt: Critical diameter ratios for reverse yielding of thick-walled cylinders are calculated, taking experimentally determined values of the Bauschinger Effect into account. The tangential residual stresses at the inside surface of the tube are then calculated based on the critical diameter ratios. It is shown that the theoretical residual stresses are reduced by 54 and 38 percent, based on the 0.1 and 0.2 percent offset yield strengths used in determining the Bauschinger Effect parameters for the high-strength, low-alloy steel used as an example for this study.
