Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of the Books and Other Short Pieces But Sir William Tem lo had missed Jonathan Swift from Moor Park. Di crenees were forgotten, and Swift, at his wish, went back. This was in 1696, when his little pu i1, Esther Johnson, was fifteen. Swift said of her, I knew her from six years old, and had some share in her education, by directing what books she should read, and perpetually instructing her in the principles of honour and virtue, from which she never swerved in any one action or moment of her life. She was sickly from her childhood until about the age of fifteen; but then grew into perfect health, and was then looked upon as one of the most beautiful, grace ful, and agreeable young women in London, only a little too fat. Her hair was blacker than a raven, and every feature of her face in perfection. Te was the Stella of Swift's after-life, the one woman to whom his whole love was given) But side by side with the slow owth of his knowledge of all she was for him, was t 6 slow growth of his conviction that attacks of giddiness and deafness, which first came when he was twenty, and recurred at times throughout his life, were signs to be associated with that which he regarded as the curse upon his life. His end would be like his uncle Godwin's. It was a curse transmis sible to children, but if he desired to keep the in uence his genius gave him, h could not tell the world why he refused to marry. Fonly to Stella, who remained unmarried fog his sake, and gave her life to him, could all be known.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Battle of the Books and Other Short Pieces by Jonathan Swift While things were in this ferment, discord grew extremely high; hot words passed on both sides, and ill blood was plentifully bred. Here a solitary Ancient, squeezed up among a whole shelf of Moderns, offered fairly to dispute the case, and to prove by manifest reason that the priority was due to them from long possession, and in regard of their prudence, antiquity, and, above all, their great merits toward the Moderns. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. Book excerpt: The Battle Of The Books And Other Short Pieces This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: The Battle of the Books and other Short Pieces by Henry Morley Jonathan Swift was born in 1667, on the 30th of November. His father was a Jonathan Swift, sixth of the ten sons of the Rev. Thomas Swift, vicar of Goodrich, near Ross, in Herefordshire, who had married Elizabeth Dryden, niece to the poet Dryden's grandfather. Jonathan Swift married, at Leicester, Abigail Erick, or Herrick, who was of the family that had given to England Robert Herrick, the poet. As their eldest brother, Godwin, was prospering in Ireland, four other Swifts, Dryden, William, Jonathan, and Adam, all in turn found their way to Dublin. Jonathan was admitted an attorney of the King's Inns, Dublin, and was appointed by the Benchers to the office of Steward of the King's Inns, in January, 1666. He died in April, 1667, leaving his widow with an infant daughter, Jane, and an unborn child. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book excerpt: The Battle of the Books is the name of a short satire written by Jonathan Swift and published as part of the prolegomena to his A Tale of a Tub in 1704. It depicts a literal battle between books in the King's Library, as ideas and authors struggle for supremacy. Because of the satire, The Battle of the Books has become a term for the Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns. It is one of his earliest well known works.

Is literature relevant to their life? Can it help shape their reality? Is this affiliation new, or is there a pattern? This book poses some answers to these questions and more; it is ideal for university students and young intellectuals who seek further insight into world literature and literary theory. As this book shows, strong and courageous voices from the past, voices that transcend time and space, like Swift’s, must remain alive in the departments of English and world literature in this wasteland of globalization - a world dominated by cold science, materialism, and conflict. There is need for Swift to haunt us, for his ghost to wake us to the truth. Anarchist, anti-colonialist, nay-sayer, champion of the oppressed and conscious of the plight of women, Swift is the ultimate “therapeutic ironist”; what more can a pen do?

The jury, after sitting all night and nearly all day, had found the prisoner not guilty. Solomon Stone, once more a free man, walked with an unsteady step and a haggard face from the court room, and with his attorney drove away. The throng of men that had attended the trial from beginning to end, each a self appointed judge, gathered in groups of twos and threes on and about the court-house steps, and discussed the case. Every face was either stern or serious. There were many emphatic gestures in the different clusters. Some spoke in low confidential tones, others argumentatively, while a few voices were loud in anger and replete with threats. These were the friends of Nathan Overton who had died, they claimed, from the effects of a blow dealt him on the head by Solomon Stone. The two men were neighbors, and had quarreled over a blooded colt which both claimed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
