Book excerpt: William Shea offers a gripping narrative of the events surrounding Prairie Grove, Arkansas, one of the great unsung battles of the Civil War that effectively ended Confederate offensive operations west of the Mississippi River. Shea provides a colorful account of a grueling campaign that lasted five months and covered hundreds of miles of rugged Ozark terrain. In a fascinating analysis of the personal, geographical, and strategic elements that led to the fateful clash in northwest Arkansas, he describes a campaign notable for rapid marching, bold movements, hard fighting, and the most remarkable raid of the Civil War.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of Prairie Grove, December 7, 1862 On Sunday, the 7th day of December, 1862, in Washington County, in the northwestern part of Arkansas, and near the Indian Territory, an engagement took place between the Union and Confederate forces called the "Battle of Fayetteville" or "Illinois Creek," but which is better known as the "Battle of Prairie Grove," which had an important bearing on subsequent military operations in the Trans-Mississippi part of the country. There are on file in the War Department in Washington forty official reports and congratulatory addresses to the troops, written by officers engaged purporting to give correct statements of the battle and the preliminary movements and skirmishes. Thirty-one of these documents are by Union and nine by Confederate officers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This expansive, multivolume reference work provides a broad, multidisciplinary examination of the Civil War period ranging from pre-Civil War developments and catalysts such as the Mexican-American War to the rebuilding of the war-torn nation during Reconstruction. The Civil War was undoubtedly the most important and seminal event in 19th-century American history. Students who understand the Civil War have a better grasp of the central dilemmas in the American historical narrative: states rights versus federalism, freedom versus slavery, the role of the military establishment, the extent of presidential powers, and individual rights versus collective rights. Many of these dilemmas continue to shape modern society and politics. This comprehensive work facilitates both detailed reading and quick referencing for readers from the high school level to senior scholars in the field. The exhaustive coverage of this encyclopedia includes all significant battles and skirmishes; important figures, both civilian and military; weapons; government relations with Native Americans; and a plethora of social, political, cultural, military, and economic developments. The entries also address the many events that led to the conflict, the international diplomacy of the war, the rise of the Republican Party and the growing crisis and stalemate in American politics, slavery and its impact on the nation as a whole, the secession crisis, the emergence of the "total war" concept, and the complex challenges of the aftermath of the conflict.

Weddle weaves the letters exchanged between Americus Leonidas Nelms and his wife Minerva Jane--his maternal grandparents--during the Civil War into a narrative about the Civil War itself. He resists the temptation to make it a family story, offering evidence of heroism and self-sacrifice by those whose forebears served in the Confederacy. The Civil War story, from whatever angle it is viewed, is one of pathos, suffering, and tragedy. It is as much so when regarded in the perspective of the deserters and those who suffered unreasoning persecution for their Union sympathies as when seen in the eyes of the long-suffering and homesick Confederate soldier. The fact is epitomized in this study of the North Texas area, whose people were sharply divided on the matter of secession.

Book excerpt: Thomas C. Hindman, an ardent defender of slavery and state rights, was the most explosive force in Arkansas politics in the years leading up to the outbreak of the Civil War. Energetic in championing a cause, fiery of temperament, and persuasively eloquent in speech, Hindman successfully led fights against Know Nothingism and the machine that had controlled the state's politics. He carried his fight against the abolitionists to Congress and vigorously campaigned for Arkansas' secession from the Union. Mindman raised a regiment at his own expense and drafted the ordinance that created Arkansas' military board. He quickly advanced from the rank of colonel to major general and for a time was commander of the Trans-Mississippi district. When he was reassigned east of the Mississippi, he participated in some of the most pivotal battles of the war, receiving injuries at Chickamauga and the Atlanta campaign. After the war, Hindman joined other Confederate refugees in Mexico. When Maximillian's government collapsed, Hindman returned to Arkansas, unpardoned and disenfranchised, and became the leader of the "Young Democracy, " a group willing to work within the bounds of the first Reconstruction Act. He had begun to build a biracial coalition to compete with the state's Republicans when he was shot at home by an unknown assassin on 27 September 1868.
