Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of Prairie Grove, December 7, 1862 On Sunday, the 7th day of December, 1862, in Washington County, in the northwestern part of Arkansas, and near the Indian Territory, an engagement took place between the Union and Confederate forces called the "Battle of Fayetteville" or "Illinois Creek," but which is better known as the "Battle of Prairie Grove," which had an important bearing on subsequent military operations in the Trans-Mississippi part of the country. There are on file in the War Department in Washington forty official reports and congratulatory addresses to the troops, written by officers engaged purporting to give correct statements of the battle and the preliminary movements and skirmishes. The following quotations will illustrate the conflict of statements on this subject. Federal writers say: It is hardly denied by the most passionate of mcclellan's partisans that the way was open before him to Richmond on the afternoon of the first day; that being mcclellan's greatest opportunity. The Confederates had thrown almost their whole force against mcclellan's left wing (keyes and Heintzelman), and on the sec ond day were streaming back to Richmond in discouragement and disorder. We now know the state of disorganization and dismay in which the rebel army retreated. On the Confederate side it is stated The way to Richmond was not open to 'mcclellan. The first day the Confederates attacked mcclel lan's left wing with but five brigades. So far from streaming back to Richmond in discouragement and disorder, they [the attacking party] remained in possession of the captured works on the Williamsburg road, nearly twenty-four hours after the fighting ended; and, on the Nine-miles road the Confederates closely confronted Sumner's corps at Fair Oaks for several days there after. Book excerpt: Thomas C. Hindman, an ardent defender of slavery and state rights, was the most explosive force in Arkansas politics in the years leading up to the outbreak of the Civil War. Energetic in championing a cause, fiery of temperament, and persuasively eloquent in speech, Hindman successfully led fights against Know Nothingism and the machine that had controlled the state's politics. He carried his fight against the abolitionists to Congress and vigorously campaigned for Arkansas' secession from the Union. Mindman raised a regiment at his own expense and drafted the ordinance that created Arkansas' military board. He quickly advanced from the rank of colonel to major general and for a time was commander of the Trans-Mississippi district. When he was reassigned east of the Mississippi, he participated in some of the most pivotal battles of the war, receiving injuries at Chickamauga and the Atlanta campaign. After the war, Hindman joined other Confederate refugees in Mexico. When Maximillian's government collapsed, Hindman returned to Arkansas, unpardoned and disenfranchised, and became the leader of the "Young Democracy, " a group willing to work within the bounds of the first Reconstruction Act. He had begun to build a biracial coalition to compete with the state's Republicans when he was shot at home by an unknown assassin on 27 September 1868.
