Dandelion Press In a rural 1940s town, ten-year-old Rusty and his friends, Squirrel and Ivy, find that some new kids have taken over their swimming hole and won’t leave. Instead of settling for a ruined summer, the friends form a battle plan to try to win Crawdad Hole back. When their efforts fail—repeatedly—they must decide whether to acknowledge their selfishness and share the swimming hole they consider theirs. Their decision to give peace offerings and ask for the other kids’ forgiveness forges new friendships.

The kids discover three things: It takes a lot of work to build a successful business, dogs and lemonade stands do not mix, and lemonade isn’t spelled “lemonaid.” Through teamwork they manage to raise some money, but will it be enough to get the perfect gift for Pastor Jenkins?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C. S. Lewis famously penned the phrase “God in the Dock” and proposed that there was a “great divide” between ancient and modern humans, in that our ancestors would have rightly seen themselves “in the dock” before God, while we moderns have placed God there before us. But what if what God's love most desires for us, the gospel or “good news” of the only way of life for humanity, has been “in the dock” before us from the time of Adam and Eve? And what if it is also the case that the gospel is often “in the dock” as though it is not good—even for the church? This book builds upon and expands the “life and death” stakes Lewis proposed by demonstrating that the gospel way of faith itself has been placed in the dock by us and in many ways ruined our relationships with God, with our own selves, with one another, and even with the natural world itself which we are meant to “steward” for its good. In these pages the reader will discover why the gospel that requires faith is good news, but why we so tragically default to our divisive and self-destructive ways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Indians worshiped them as creators of the world, Napoleon ate them to celebrate his victories, Swedes have them shipped in from halfway around the world, and for Louisiana's Cajuns the humble crawfish is the centerpiece of cuisine, a symbol of ethnic pride, a staple commodity for thriving business ventures, and an inextricable part of folklore. Research and interviews spice this delightful book that details the relationship between crawfish and humans—from antiquity to the New York markets of the 1880s; from Depression-era pauper's feast to gourmet entree of the 1980s Cajun cooking craze; from spring afternoon pastime to modern aquaculture agribusiness. To get the reader's mouth watering, more than two dozen recipes from those who know crawfish best—both famous chefs and crawfishers—are interspersed throughout. Sections offer advice on catching, buying, handling, cooking, and, for those who wish to simplify their encounters with crawfish, ordering tasty dishes in restaurants. Included are also a bibliographical essay, an index to recipes, and a list of sources for spices, paraphernalia, and airfreight shipments of crawfish.

Book excerpt: The Ku Klux Klan has received much attention for its violent activities, but comparatively little research has been done on its musical legacy. The printed music that still exists is spread throughout the nation in both public and private collections. This work presents, chronologically, the music associated with the Klan from 1867 to 2002, thus enabling readers to sense the arguments and attitudes of the Klan as they developed and changed over time. Because of the relative scarcity of Klan–related music, non–Klan music that mentions the word “Klan” is included. These obscure references help place the Klan in a larger social perspective and are very important in documenting anti–Klan musical reaction. In instances where a song merely mentions the Klan, usually in only one verse or in the chorus, then only that verse containing the Klan reference, plus appropriate context, is included. The catalogue also includes Klan–related music that does not have lyrics, such as marches, waltzes, two-steps, and several Klan–related pieces that were published in Europe. Sheet music was virtually nonexistent after the 1930s, so in order to capture a feeling of Klan–related music today, a limited discography of Klan–related recordings from 1920 to 2002 is also included.

Book excerpt: Grace Summer lands herself in a melon load of trouble when she becomes torn between the boy of her dreams and the boy almost next door. As the newly crowned Watermelon Queen, she is thrust into the spotlight, meets the dreamy Warren Hartley, and continues trying to get over an accident that rocked her world. Mix in working with Beau Baron who Grace happens to fight with just about as much as breathing and the metaphorical sparks fly. Like most things in life, Grace must learn to take the good with the bad. While the good is the handsome and fun Warren Hartley, the bad is Beau Baron—or at least being around his annoying and rude self way more than she would like. For Beau, Grace is nothing more than aggravating and an irritating reminder from the night of the accident. Tensions soar as Grace and Beau fight to love themselves and maybe, just maybe, each other.
