Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Basket Makers, Vol. 1 of 2 One fine summer's afternoon, a Sundayw school teacher was returning from a neighbour ing village, where he had been instructing his class. He was one who enjoyed aright the scenes of nature, because he had learnt to view them in the light of God's holy word. The va tious objects he met with were made occasions of recalling to his mind passages of Scripture by which they were improved. Thus a serious and devotional spirit was cultivated, and the mind brought into a pleasing state of prepara tion for the services of the sanctuary, which he' usually attended in the evening, having sacri ficed his own privileges in the afternoon, in orr der to promote the best interests of poor chil dren. Thought along the lines of manual train ing is susceptible of expression in many ways and through many mediums. The expression of thought through wood and iron necessitates a more or less elaborate equipment of tools, and for this reason those mediums of expression are denied younger pupils. But the expression of thought through basketry, requires almost no tools (a knife and scratch-awl), has variety as to form and color and almost unlimited possibilities in design. It is my aim in this booklet to give in simple English and with illustrations which may be comprehended by the youngest pupil, the results of my thought and teaching of basketry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Basketmakers' Company The Craft Guilds or Livery Companies, with their ancient records and historical associations, rank among the most interesting institutions of the City of London. Deprived of old-world surroundings, their quaint customs have lost their former significance, and their powers and privileges have, with few exceptions, become obsolete. Yet in spite of altered economic conditions the old Guilds survive, for time seems powerless to efface such splendid monuments to the wisdom and industry of our forefathers. The annals of most of these ancient Guilds have been written, but the compiler of the following pages found to his regret that no history of the Basket-makers existed. A search among the civic and parochial archives was therefore instituted and this account compiled, with the object of preserving the old records, and in the hope that the work now submitted may serve as an outline for the worthier efforts of others in the future. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Basket Making: Being the First Book of the How to Do It Series A demand for lessons in basket weaving by mail has led to the publishing of Basket Making, which is the first of the How To Do It series of handbooks that is about to be published by the printing department of the Art Craft Institute. These books will all be of uniform size and style, and will cover such subjects as Drawing, Designing, Phoenician Wood Carving and Pyrography, Metal work, Needle work and other arts that are taught in the Institute. Each edition will be fully illustrated, and as concise as consistent with the nature of the subject. It is expected that these books will, to a certain ex tent, take the place of the correspondence course, although work will still be received for criticism, as it is quite impossible to meet every requirement of the students in any one book, or in fact any num ber of books. The work is condensed to cover as large a field as possible, and the only excuse for its being, is, that it may assist those who are now struggling with the intricacies of basket making. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fine Willow Basketry While it is strongly urged that traditional methods be adhered to, the same argument does not apply, in the case of designs, and a large variety of pattern and an infinite variety of shape is possible, the latter being suggested by everyday objects such as boxes, bowls, vases, and other brie-a-bmc found in every home. The baskets of commerce can also be taken as models and produced in miniature as, for example, the familiar Christmas hamper. In this little manual restraint has been exercised with regard to the designs used as examples and the reader is recommended to master the traditional forms exemplified here before giving rein to his fancy. One thing is important. As soon as the novice gains some mastery over his material, he should endeavour to work strictly to a shape and measurements previously determined upon. Nothing is easier than to allow the work to get out of hand and if this happens it is useless to attempt to make it come right. There is only one remedy and that the drastic one of cutting down the work to the point where it started to go wrong and doing it over again. In the practice of basket-making speed is an important factor as the work is mainly a repetition of a few simple weaves or strokes. The expert attains speed not by strain and hurry, but by the elimination of all superfluous motions, a point to which the novice should give careful attention, particularly in the preliminary cutting out of material, For example, it is far quicker to slype all the stakes at one opera tion than to do each one separately and insert it in the bottom before doing the next. An hour or so spent in watching an expert basket maker will be an eye-opener in this respect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Make Baskets: With a Chapter on "What the Basket Means to the Indian" The twisting and weaving of Nature's materials, grasses, twigs, rushes and vines into useful and beautiful forms seems almost instinctive in man. Perhaps it came to him as the nest-weaving instinct comes to birds - for at first he used it as they do, in the building of his house. Later shields and boats were formed of wicker work but how long ago the first basket was made no one is wise enough to tell us. Today Indian tribes in South America weave baskets from their native palms, South African negroes use reeds and roots, while the Chinese and Japanese are wonderful workmen in this as in other arts and industries; but basketry has come down to us more directly through the American Indian. Generations of these weavers have produced masterpieces, many of which are preserved in our museums, and the young basket maker need not go on long pilgrimages to study the old masters of his craft. Here at last, as in England, the value of manual training is being realized, and basketry is taking an important place. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Basket, 1904, Vol. 2: The Journal of the Basket Fraternity, or Lovers of Indian Baskets and Other Good Things When does the age of invention begin? Could we but look back mto the far away dim ages of the past and watch the ascent of man from barbarism to civilization, how fascinating the occupation would be! Especially would our keenest interest be aroused at those epoch making periods in which some small but important discovery was on the verge of being made; when humanity was stumbling toward some great fact that, once seized, was to revolutionize future methods. \vho would not delight in such occupation, were he able to take with him into those dark days the light of present day knowledge? How did men invent fire? When, where and how (lid they first make any kind of clothing or house? Under what circumstances did they fashion the first weapon? When consciously grind corn? W'eave baskets? Make pottery? And the thousand and one other things that the little bronze women and men have handed down to us? I can conceive of few things as interesting as these in all human progress. How one's heart would beat in high expectation, knowing what was to come, when the naked aborigine first began to shape a bow and arrow; a throwing stick, a war club, a battle-axe! How many attempts there were before success crowned the first efforts; or, alas! How often the thing had to be given up until some future time, perhaps centuries later! How the primitive inventor, prompted by some feel ing, he knew not what, working solely for his own interest and profit. Without thought of financial reward, or the higher incitement of doing good to his fellows, blindly groped along, confident that he could suc ceed where success had never yet beckoned; assured that he could accomplish, where none as yet had accomplished! Book excerpt: Excerpt from More Baskets and How to Make Them The interest in basketry which began in this country some three years ago is on the increase rather than on the wane. This may seem surpris ing to the uninitiated, but those who have made baskets will understand it. Basketry has proved itself. In schools and social settlements one notes the contrast between the beginners' mats and baskets, loosely woven and crude in form, and the graceful forms and solid weaving of experienced young craftsmen. A well-made basket shows more than dexterity and skill: it stands for patience and stick-to-it-iveness, and has the value of all good work. Best of all, children love the craft and would rather weave baskets or wander afield in search of natural material for weaving or dyes than do anything else you can suggest. To grown people basketry is a boon. It is unusual to find a craft so simple as to require no tools or para.
