Book excerpt: In my book, 'Why I Hate Nepalese?', I delve into the reasons behind my strong negative feelings towards the people of Nepal. Through my personal experiences and observations, I have come to the conclusion that Nepalese people possess certain qualities and characteristics that make them difficult to like. One of the main issues I have with Nepalese people is their lack of punctuality. I have encountered countless instances where I have had to wait for hours for a Nepalese person to show up for a meeting or appointment. This lack of respect for other people's time is not only frustrating but also reflects a lack of professionalism and responsibility.

In the summer of 2011, two bleary-eyed kids, teetering on the cusp of adulthood, decide to drop out of the daily grind and just travel. But once they hit the road, their plans go out the window. Soon, they are barreling over potholes the size of lunar craters in Nepal, bungee jumping in Rishikesh, waking up to Buddhist chants in Sikkim and cycling down the world’s highest motorable pass in Ladakh. On the way is a constant stream of oddballs, like the five-second-tea lady, the flute-playing hotel manager, flying Sonam, reggae junkies and many more – this journey is all about rolling with the punches. Special Lassi is one part funny, two parts crazy and a whisper of wistful – for the best things are ephemeral and a lust for life is a dangerous thing. AMRITA CHATTERJEE is a unicorn who likes to frolic in her mythical la-la-land, and surfaces occasionally to check on the real world. But the lights are brighter on the other side and she hopes you will follow her there, if only for a while.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theravada Buddhism has experienced a powerful and far-reaching revival in modern Nepal, especially among the Newar Buddhist laity, many of whom are reorganizing their lives according to its precepts, practices and ideals. This book documents these far-reaching social and personal transformations and links them to political, economic and cultural shifts associated with late modernity, and especially neoliberal globalization. Nepal has changed radically over the last century, particularly since the introduction of liberal democracy and an open-market economy in 1990. The rise of lay vipassana meditation has also dramatically impacted the Buddhist landscape. Drawing on recently revived understandings of ethics as embodied practices of self-formation, the author argues that the Theravada turn is best understood as an ethical movement that offers practitioners ways of engaging, and models for living in, a rapidly changing world. The book takes readers into the Buddhist reform from the perspectives of its diverse practitioners, detailing devotees' ritual and meditative practices, their often conflicted relations to Vajrayana Buddhism and Newar civil society, their struggles over identity in a formerly Hindu nation-state, and the political, cultural, institutional and moral reorientations that becoming a "pure Buddhist"—as Theravada devotees understand themselves—entails. Based on more than 20 years of anthropological fieldwork, this book is an important contribution to scholarly debates over modern Buddhism, ethical practices, and the anthropology of religion. It is of interest to students and scholars of Asian Religion, Anthropology, Buddhism and Philosophy.
