Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1970. This an important addition to the understanding of African Islamic studies. Hausa folklore is rich i the world-wide motifs found in one form or another in such widely differing cultures as India, Scandinavia, American, Ireland and so on. There are familiar characters that can be identified from European folklore, but more often than not a number of motifs are clearly Indian. The publication of this second impression of Tremeane's work, is particularly welcome at a time when there is a growing interest among students in the background of ideas that inform African cultures as well as in the phenomena of African languages and the structures of African societies. But this material should not be seen as exclusively African. It is also part of the general Islamic heritage and contains a wealth of evidence to enable us to explain and understand the nature of the Islamic presence in Africa. Includes forty-one illustrations, over two hundred figures in the text, and a map.

Book excerpt: The Oxford Guide to the Book of Common Prayer is the first comprehensive guide to the history and usage of the original Book of Common Prayer and its variations. Expert contributors from around the world and from every major denomination offer an unparalleled view of The Book of Common Prayer and its influence. The Oxford Guide to Common Prayer is more than simply a history: it describes how Anglican churches at all points of the compass have developed their own Prayer Books and adapted the time-honored Anglican liturgies to their diverse local cultures. The Guide examines how the same texts - Daily Prayers, the Eucharist, Marriage and Funerals, and many others - in dozens of editions now in use throughout the world, both resemble and differ from one another. A brief look at "electronic Prayer Books" also offers a unique and exciting modern perspective. The Oxford Guide to the Book of Common Prayer offers a fascinating journey through the history and development of a classic of world literature from its origins in the 16th century to the modern day. Oxford is pleased to offer The Book of Common Prayer in a variety of formats and prices to match readers' needs and budgets - perfect for study or gift-giving. Visit our website to order your copy today. * A comprehensive survey of the rich history of the original Book of Common Prayer and all of its varied descendents. * Explains, characterizes, and illustrates the dozens of Prayer Book versions in current use throughout the world. * Lays out a path that will enable any reader, Anglican or not, to learn why the BCP is a classic of liturgy and literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calvary is the place where Jesus Christ paid the ultimate sacrifice for the redemption of mankind and for our sanctification and where he answered to every litigation of the accuser against us. Calvary invariably represents the cross as the cross represents our savior, Jesus Christ. Man on earth is on a journey of discovering, and this search can only have a positive end when it culminates at the knowledge and acceptance of our Lord Jesus as a personal savior, friend, redeemer, and God. Man has been given the right to choose between good and evil at all times but not the right to choose his destiny, his fate, or the circumstance of his life. Discovering Calvary has been a journey of twenty-one years. The hero of this novel, Samuel Okorie, is a young Nigerian youth born into an orthodox Christian family. The plot takes us through both his physical and spiritual journey from the tender age of about eight years old to maturity. Samuel eventually attains maturity not by succumbing to stronger (spiritual) forces or stronger arguments on lifes ideas and Christian tenets but by making decisive personal choices. Discovering Calvary, therefore, is about this journey. In the plot of the story, the reader is exposed, along with the hero, to some aberrations that inadvertently exist in the lives of avowed Christians. The reader sees Samuel Okorie forced by circumstances beyond his control to discover life truths and standard Christian tenets. The readers sympathy might be aroused because she/he identifies with the hero and feels his pain. The reader rejoices at Samuels eventual victory at the discovery of Calvary.

Book excerpt: This collection of essays explores the critical and fluid nature of security challenges that have plagued Nigeria since colonial times. Insecurity in diverse forms remains the bane of growth and progressive development in the country, and has the capability to derail a society no matter how sophisticated. What has generated insecurity at the macro- and micro-levels? How has insecurity been tackled? Why have security challenges escalated particularly in the post-independence period? What lessons could be learnt from the way security matters have been (mis)handled in the past? This volume presents chapters on the historical roots and antecedents of security challenges, and considers the nexus between the economy, political leadership and development, and its impacts on security in modern Nigeria. It also explores the effectiveness of the strategies employed to address security challenges, and discusses why some security challenges have lingered.

Book excerpt: Kidnapped from Galway, Ireland, as a young girl, shipped to Barbados, and forced to work the land alongside African slaves, Cot Daley's life has been shaped by injustice. In this stunning debut novel, Kate McCafferty re-creates, through Cot's story, the history of the more than fifty thousand Irish who were sold as indentured servants to Caribbean plantation owners during the seventeenth century. As Cot tells her story-the brutal journey to Barbados, the harrowing years of fieldwork on the sugarcane plantations, her marriage to an African slave and rebel leader, and the fate of her children—her testimony reveals an exceptional woman's astonishing life.
