Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Barnes Family Year Book, Vol. 1: An Annual Publication Issued Under the Authority of the Barnes Family Association Little has found its way into history relating to the Barnes Family in America. Such as has been published has resulted in many errors, and given rise to false impressions. It has been the life work of the author to trace, generation by generation, the descendants of those ancestors of the Barnes name who settled in Connecticut during the first half of the seventeenth century, embracing branches of relationship so very remote that almost all traces had become obliterated. The similarity of names running through families living near each other, has made his task a most difficult one, and only by close comparison and patient study has he been able to separate one individual from another bearing the same name and age, and from the same locality. Many will, no doubt, find he has traced their relationship to ancestors unheard of. He has traced forward from the ancestor, step by step, rather than by the reverse, or backward process, until the living representatives of their different lines have been found. By this method he has been able to solve many stubborn problems, though not without many years' delay, and leaving others to occupy his attention. He does not claim perfection for his work, but desires to present for preservation what he has, and asks the further co-operation of all, that all errors may be corrected, so when the time comes for a general history of the Barnes family to be published, it may be perfect in every respect and worthy of our greatest effort. He contemplates making this pamphlet one of a series to appear annually, which shall include all records pertaining to all branches of the Barnes name and blood. To our earlier genealogies and local histories, we owe almost everything; we have freely borrowed information, but have endeavored to verify them by individual research and investigation. If he has eliminated errors and opened family lines whereby others may gain an opportunity to go still farther toward perfecting them, his work will surely not be overlooked or forgotten, but as an association, it will be continued hand in hand with all who truly yearn for the preservation of family lines and traditions.
