Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bards of the Bible The succeeding work does not profess to be an ela borate or full account of the mechanical structure of Hebrew poetry, nor a work of minute and verbal criticism. In order that the book may be tried by its own pretensions, the author deems it necessary to premise that, While containing much literary criticism, and a considerable proportion of biographical and religious matter, and While meant to develop indi rectly a subsidiary argument for the truth and divinity of the Bible, its main ambition is to be a Prose Poem, or Hymn, in honor of the Poetry and Poets Of the inspired volume, although, as the reader Will per ceive, he has occasionally diverged into the analysis of Scripture characters, and more rarely into cognate fields of literature or of speculation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oratory and Poetry of the Bible For the past fifteen years I have tried to incite my students in New York University, in Rutgers College, and now in the Seminary, to read the Bible, not as a task, but as a pleasure, and have had fair success. The books of the Prophets look very dull simply as books but when we look at them as largely sketches of ora tions and exercise our historical imagination to hear the orators speak, they become intensely interesting. I have tried in the classroom to so describe the times, the questions of the day, and the men that we could imagine ourselves in the crowd facing Isaiah, for in stance, as he held the multitude spell-bound by his eloquence. In this book I make the same attempt, but now I am forced to adopt the device of Short Stories of 'great Orations, as told in letters supposed to have been written by those who heard them. Such letters de scribing orations by Webster, Beecher, or Gladstone are of much general interest and help us to hear them, so I would help all hear Moses, Amos and Paul. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Part of Rheims in the Making of the English Bible In this latter work the Rhemish version again finds a place; but, strange to say, the Bishops' Bible - the most abundant of the sources of the Authorized version - is not included. Another version of primary importance, the Genevan, is also left out: for by a curious blunder, calculated to mislead the unwary student, in the column headed 'geneva, ' Whitting ham's New Testament of 1557 has been printed. A complete enumeration of versions and editions of versions consulted by me will be found in Chapter II. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poets of the Old Testament A vast amount of important work has recently been done on the poetry of the Old Testament. Thus far, however, no attempt has been made to bring home the results, as a unified whole, to the English reader. The present book seeks, within limits, to supply this want. A brief sketch is first offered of the general characteristics of Hebrew poetry. Then the growth of the literature itself is traced from its roots in the old folk-poetry of Israel to its full flower in the Psalter and Wisdom books like Proverbs and Job. The aim has been throughout to catch the heart and spirit of the poetry. Thus questions of Introduction are treated only incidentally, and by way of approach to the centre. Translations are also given of the most characteristic passages, as far as possible in the rhythm of the original. The scope of the work might, indeed, have been wider. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophets of the Old Testament Individual prophets have received brilliant ex position at the hands of English-speaking scholars. There is still room, however, for a comprehensive treatment of the subject, which allows the prophets to speak for themselves. The present volume seeks to fulfil this ideal, within necessary limits. Thecourse of prophecy is traced from its first morning beams, tillthelightdisappearsintherosyflushoi Apocalypse; the prophets are set on the back ground of their time, and portrayed in their sharply contrasted personality and experience; but the stress throughout is laid on translations of their most significant utterances, which reproduce as nearly. As possible the sense and rhythm of the original. The volume is thus, in subject-matter and method of treatment alike, the complement of my previous work on The Poets of the Old Testament, to which the reader is referred for a statement of general principles.
