Book excerpt: I was known as Fenrir the Destroyer, the taker of lives and castles, a brutal Viking warrior in the Kingdom of Kaldir. My kingdom. My name traveled far and wide, and those who heard it knew their place... accepted their fear above all else.I had riches beyond measure, my followers countless and loyal. But I was missing the most crucial part of my reign, of my ruling.A wife. My queen. A mother to my warrior sons and princess daughters. But there's only one female who tempted my eye and made me yearn for more. And for years I coveted her and her alone, waited until I could provide for her without fail.My Prima. She'd once been a young sapling barely reaching my thighs, but she'd grown into a mature woman full of curves that made me ache. She was the female I knew would make my filthiest fantasies come true.Prima was so small, tiny compared to me, and every protective instinct I had rose up with a vengeance strong enough to level anything in its path. I'd always protect her without fail. She was mine, no matter what. And when timid, inexperienced Prima was finally brought to me-my conquest after years of being alone-I was a selfish bastard and wouldn't deny myself from claiming her.In the end, she'd surrender. Because beneath her uncertainty and innocence was a wildfire I was ready to let burn me alive.

Book excerpt: Ramsay MacLaren owes a debt to the daughter of the Hawk of Inverfyre, one he will never forget‚ for the beguiling beauty helped him escape her father’s dungeon, saving his life and capturing his heart. When he hears that she is to wed a man he knows to be a knave, Ramsay must warn her, though he believes he can never claim Evangeline for his own. Rebellion in her heart, Evangeline Armstrong hopes for the best from her arranged match with a stranger, dreaming all the while of a single encounter with Ramsay MacLaren, a handsome outlaw, her father’s sworn enemy, and a man whose very name makes her heart leap. Brigands attack her party en route to the wedding, and Ramsay himself corners her, insisting she must not make the match, then steals a kiss that will haunt her dreams. Evangeline soon learns the truth of Ramsay’s claim when she is the sole witness of her betrothed’s heinous crime. Without allies in his abode, she flees his attack upon her with Ramsay’s aid—who insists they wed for her own protection. Their night together only awakens a desire for a thousand more—and makes Evangeline yearn for a forbidden union that she fears can never be. Can she trust a warrior whose kiss stirs her very soul, choosing him over her own family? Even if Ramsay can defeat his lady’s betrothed and defend her honor, can he win the heart of the lady who holds him in thrall?

Book excerpt: Students reading the Iliad for the first time are often bewildered by the sheer volume of information on apparently unrelated subjects contained in it. The central narrative seems to unfold very slowly, and to be complicated by long speeches containing stories which might be interesting in themselves, but which seem to have no relevance to anything else. In this book Dr Alden offers advice on how to read the Iliad through the relationship of major paradigms to the events of the main narrative. The first section offers the first full-length study in English of the paradigmatic functions of secondary narratives and minor-key episodes in the Iliad. None of these are irrelevant or merely ornamental: rather each is carefully selected and altered if necessary, to reflect on significant episodes of the main narrative and act as guides to its interpretation. The second section offers a general reading of the Iliad arising out of Phoenix's advice to Achilles in Book 9. The allegory of the Prayers illustrates the dire consequences of rejecting prayers, and the paradigm of Meleager presents us with an instance of an angry hero to whom prayers and entreaties are addressed, whilst the primary narrative confines this motif of prayers and entreaties in ascending scale of affection to Achilles and Hector and contrasts their responses. Both heroes suffer terribly for their rejection of entreaties.

Parker and Sully know the second they meet a beautiful passenger on the train to Butte that she will be their bride. They expected to court her properly, to acclimate to the unusual custom of being the wife of two men. Instead, she turns to them with an insane scheme to protect herself from a man they know to be anything but kind. But a fiancé won't protect her from a bad marriage. Only a husband can do that. When Mary weds her Bridgewater men, she learns that while she has two big cowboys to protect her from her past, it's possible she has the power to save them right back.

Book excerpt: This scandalous rake only meant to save a damsel in distress...not claim her as his own. The Marquess of Hayden might have his flaws, but he's never reneged on a bet. If the rumors are true, and the so-called Mad Earl truly does have a daughter, then Hayden will find her. But nothing can prepare him for the instant attraction he feels when he does. Hidden away from society, the beautiful and mysterious Madeline seems more like a princess from a fairy tale than an illegitimate child of the infamous tyrant. When he learns that she's a prisoner in her own home, a victim of the earl and his cruel bride, it's clear what he has to do. Or rather, it seemed clear when he'd been deep in his cups. Unfortunately, his botched attempt at a rescue leaves them both in more trouble than he'd imagined. But now it's his duty to keep Madeline safe and the only way to do that is to marry. There are worse fates than to be shackled with the woman who'd bewitched him. Once the maiden is out of her tower and in his bed, he finds she's no damsel but an enchantress who knows how to keep him lusting for more. So no...not exactly torture. They might even find happiness together-except that the marquess isn't known for his ability to commit, and the lady he's married has secrets that threaten any trust they might have forged. It was desire at first sight that brought him into her life, and dirty deeds in the bedroom that keeps them together...but will they find a love to make it last? Note: This series is part of Dragonblade's Flame line, so this is a sexy, steamy, and scorching-hot read with multiple sex scenes. Be advised. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time of his death in 2004, Jacques Derrida was arguably the most influential and the most controversial thinker in contemporary philosophy. But how does one respond to the death of Jacques Derrida? How does one mourn for Derrida, who spent thirty years warning of the dangers of mourning, while insisting that mourning is both unavoidable and impossible? In this original and engaging response to Derrida's death, Sean Gaston re-examines his own relationship with this great thinker and traces his own mourning, while examining the very nature of mourning in Derrida's work. Written in the immediate aftermath of Derrida's death, this insightful and touching account offers a fresh analysis of a vital element of Derrida's thought and a genuine reflection on the implications of Derrida's death for how we will now address his work.
