Book excerpt: Mariah, the Maiden of Mesopotamia, has an opportunity to tutor the children of the Parthian queen at the palace in Babylon. En route, she gets word that the queen has suddenly died. Now Mariah must not only become the children's tutor, but their full-time guardian as well, by order of the king. Also along the way, Mariah falls in love with her carriage driver. Unfortunately, the widower king falls in love with her, too. Her heart, which was already torn by the son she gave up for adoption, years ago, is now further divided between love and duty. The King wants to make her into his mistress, but Mariah must keep him at arm's length and choose the best path. Adding to the secret sorrow of her lost son, his father unexpectedly shows up and makes trouble that could ruin her reputation, or worse. THE BABYLONIAN QUEEN is the stunning story of a smart, strong woman's life in 5 A.D. Reader fans of Anita Diamant's THE RED TENT will find a new Biblical-era heroine to love in THE BABYLONIAN QUEEN.

Book excerpt: Beginning with Diodorus Siculus's first-century BCE account and extending to early modern German Meisterlieder, this book explores the plethora of narratives about the ancient Babylonian queen Semiramis. The selected texts, most from continental Europe, cover a range of genres and languages. Organized thematically around issues of visual communication -- acts of seeing and being seen -- this study highlights the narrative fluidity in the matière de Sémiramide, ultimately revealing a figure of excess and surplus that defies classification and categorization. In its thematic focus, this study also draws on the competitive yet complementary relationship between the visual and the verbal.

Book excerpt: This is a history of goddess-worship. Written like a graphic novel, this well-researched book shows how goddess worship "morphed" through the centuries until it climaxed in its present most common form: the worship of the Virgin Mary. In different cultures, the names were different, but the goddess was the same. She was the Queen of Heaven, the mother of the god. She became the Mediatrix through whom all must go to reach their god.Author David Daniels is a stickler for research, so no one will be surprised to find a 30-page section of End Notes, as well as annotated bibliography. You can check out his facts for yourself! It's a heavy subject, but the illustrations by Jack T Chick help to make the story flow, and a lot easier for the casual reader to understand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Achaemenid Persian Empire, at its greatest territorial extent under Darius I (r.522–486 BCE), held sway over territory stretching from the Indus River Valley to southeastern Europe and from the western Himalayas to northeast Africa. In this book, Matt Waters gives a detailed historical overview of the Achaemenid period while considering the manifold interpretive problems historians face in constructing and understanding its history. This book offers a Persian perspective even when relying on Greek textual sources and archaeological evidence. Waters situates the story of the Achaemenid Persians in the context of their predecessors in the mid-first millennium BCE and through their successors after the Macedonian conquest, constructing a compelling narrative of how the empire retained its vitality for more than two hundred years (c.550–330 BCE) and left a massive imprint on Middle Eastern as well as Greek and European history.

Book excerpt: The year is 596 B.C. Kingdoms and empires rise and fall, carrying men along with the inexorable insistence of a vast desert storm. Kasher, a young Mesopotamian man, determines to become a part of the empire of the great Nebuchadnezzar II, only to find himself on the battlefield not only of men, but of the gods. What do the great symbols of Babylon - lions, dragons, gods and demi-gods - really mean: or are they merely for show? His journey is one of mysticism, treachery and love. The world in which he moves is filled with symbolism, rivalry and beauty. His true quest, however, reaches much deeper - into his own soul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise and beautifully designed book exploring the symbolism behind an exquisite Ancient Babylonian plaque found in southern Iraq. This spectacular terracotta plaque was the principal acquisition for the British Museum's 250th anniversary, and in 2004 was exhibited in various museums around the UK. Made between 1800 and 1859 BC, it is made from baked straw-tempered clay and modelled in high relief. It probably stood in a shrine and could represent the demoness Lilitu, known in the Bible as Lilith, or a Mesopotamian goddess. The figure wears the horned headdress characteristic of a Mesopotamian deity, and holds a rod and ring of justice, symbols of her divinity. Her long multi-coloured wings hang downwards, indicating that she is a goddess of the Underworld. The book explores the history and symbolism behind this beautiful and highly unusual relief.
