Book excerpt: "A holistic assessment of what journalism is all about, with plenty of enterprising interpretations of our trade - a word I prefer to 'profession'. I never met a more 'unprofessional' breed than that of my fellow hacks. This book will, I hope, lead our successors both to question and rebel more than we have." - Jon Snow, Channel 4 News "Stands out in a crowded field." The Guardian "The bible of professional education in journalism... Every student of journalism should buy a copy." - THE (Times Higher Education) This is the indispensable guide to the theory and practice of journalism, now updated with 25% entirely new material. With its innovative text design, it creatively combines the experience and advice of practising journalists with the theories and insights from the academic study of journalism. This second edition thoroughly addresses the ‘converged’ nature of much 21st century journalism, with discussion and examples of online practice embedded throughout to represent the reality that online journalism is increasingly part of the job for all journalists. New and improved features include: More examples, more depth, and more interviews with journalists. A whole new chapter on telling stories through pictures, whether on TV or online. Fresh new examples reflecting today’s journalistic practice. More insights from online journalists on blogging, the use of video and audio on the web, interactive maps and other ways of doing journalism online. This edition embraces the new without abandoning the fundamentals of what journalism is all about. It will continue to inspire students of journalism to reflect on everyday practice and connect it to academic debate.

Book Synopsis Boeing 707 Group by : Graham M. Simons
Download or read book Boeing 707 Group written by Graham M. Simons and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive look at the plane that revolutionized air travel and its place in aviation history from the author of Comet! The World’s First Jet Airliner. The Boeing 707 family—that includes the forerunner Model 367-80, the KC-135 series of military transports and the slightly smaller Model 720—was the pioneer of the sweptback wing, incorporating podded engines borrowed from the B-47 military bomber. It was the aircraft that many regard as the design that really ushered in the Jet-Age. This book from the established aviation historian Graham Simons examines the entire course of the Boeing 707’s history, charting an impressive design evolution and illustrating the many ways in which the 707’s legacy continues to be felt to this day. In laying the foundation for Boeing’s preeminence on the world’s jetliner market during the 1980s and 90s, the 707 paved the way for future innovations in both civilian and military fields and Graham Simons has put together an image-packed history that records the historic and landmark milestones of this iconic aircraft type. “The book is well worth the price and will provide many hours of intriguing reading and research support. It is a good addition to one’s aviation bookshelf.”—Air Power History “An impressive volume that is well-written, and easy to read. Its research is of a high standard. It will, of course, appeal to Boeing 707/C-135 ‘enthusiasts’ and as such could well become a ‘Standard Reference Work’ on its subject.”—NZ Crown Mines

Book Synopsis When Computers Were Human by : David Alan Grier
Download or read book When Computers Were Human written by David Alan Grier and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2007-09-16 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Palm Pilots and iPods, PCs and laptops, the term "computer" referred to the people who did scientific calculations by hand. These workers were neither calculating geniuses nor idiot savants but knowledgeable people who, in other circumstances, might have become scientists in their own right. When Computers Were Human represents the first in-depth account of this little-known, 200-year epoch in the history of science and technology. Beginning with the story of his own grandmother, who was trained as a human computer, David Alan Grier provides a poignant introduction to the wider world of women and men who did the hard computational labor of science. His grandmother's casual remark, "I wish I'd used my calculus," hinted at a career deferred and an education forgotten, a secret life unappreciated; like many highly educated women of her generation, she studied to become a human computer because nothing else would offer her a place in the scientific world. The book begins with the return of Halley's comet in 1758 and the effort of three French astronomers to compute its orbit. It ends four cycles later, with a UNIVAC electronic computer projecting the 1986 orbit. In between, Grier tells us about the surveyors of the French Revolution, describes the calculating machines of Charles Babbage, and guides the reader through the Great Depression to marvel at the giant computing room of the Works Progress Administration. When Computers Were Human is the sad but lyrical story of workers who gladly did the hard labor of research calculation in the hope that they might be part of the scientific community. In the end, they were rewarded by a new electronic machine that took the place and the name of those who were, once, the computers.

Book Synopsis Territoriality and the Westernization Imperative by : Claude V. Chang
Download or read book Territoriality and the Westernization Imperative written by Claude V. Chang and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2008-01-17 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coexistence in an atmosphere of mutual respect in a pluralist world order has become an even greater challenge in the practice of international relations since the murderous acts committed by al-Qaeda on September 11, 2001 (9/11) that demanded justice. This book looks beyond today's popular narratives. Dr. Chang explores the extent to which the tragedy of 9/11 has been exploited by the neoconservative-controlled U.S. administration as opportunity to launch its grand strategy for creating an American-centric order, necessary for the continuation of U.S. hegemony in the twenty-first century. Specific controversial concerns are extensively examined within the historical and theoretical context of territoriality and power. The state of the American economy; the Arab-Israel conflict; and the invasion of Iraq and its aftermath are treated as interrelated issues and examined in terms of the Westernization imperative inherent in the grand strategy that principally requires the containment of an emerging China.
