Book excerpt: The Good Life was a publication that was sent out on a semi-regular basis to a small group of friends/colleagues/subscribers beginning in November 1993 and concluding in September 2002. This book is a compilation of those issues. The subject material is varied and diverse---the bulk of it is a recounting of real life experiences, both mundane and dramatic, frequently analyzed from sociological, philosophical, psychological and humanistic perspectives. It also includes commentary on sociological issues, as well as topical commentary on the events of the day: the O.J. Simpson trial, the death of Princess Diana, and September 11, 2001. Sports topics of the day are discussed, and a smattering of poetry is also included, as well as reader commentary. It is an open-minded and multi-faceted book unlike any other you have read or will read.

Book excerpt: Though the Word of God is likened to honey being savored, daily bread being enjoyed, rain bringing refreshing, and a lamp giving direction, it is also like a fire burning up the chaff, a hammer breaking the rock into pieces, and a double-edged sword piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit. A combined effect of the Word as hammer, fire, and sword should have the desired purifying effect on those areas of our lives that need cleansing! Though it is true that God desires to work with us, there may be certain things in our lives that prevent God from working with us. Then those areas have to be dealt with. Self, jealousy, pride and lust are some of the negatives that could hinder God from working with us. When we allow the Lord to lay the axe to the root and do a cleansing work in these areas of our lives, we will be better people not only for God but also for each other. Book excerpt: The Axe Laid to the Root, Fred Pruitt’s second book, immediately plumbs to the final depths of personal spirituality in Christ. Though it seems to start as a simple exposition of scripture and a reiteration of basic Christian theology, it soon becomes far more than that. The book develops into a profound spiritual tome, evoking not only an expansion of our conceptual understanding of salvation through Jesus Christ and the Cross, but even more so hits a central nerve in each of us, by putting into words the realities of every believer’s deep inner spiritual struggles, articulating the unspoken groans of the Holy Spirit in us. This is NOT a “how-to” book. Nor is it a book that calls for rededication or redoubling our efforts. Those subjects are about the work of man. It is instead a book about losing everything and finding all. It is about the work which GOD does in us. It is about recognizing God as the Doer, the Instigator, and the One Who brings all these things to pass – in us! One reader wrote the following, which describes The Axe Laid to the Root to a “t.” “You've done an amazing thing there: summarized the ONE and single Bible theme into just a few pages. [It is] the whole shebang ... Father's salvation intent from beginning to end. Wow: the message now so simple but oh, so hard-earned for us all down our 2000 year history. So many dead ends and blind alleys … have been suffered on the way to this single-eye vision.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although recent discussions on Matthew have emphasized the document's setting within Judaism, these studies have not analyzed how the Jewish figure of John the Baptist functions within this setting. Brian Dennert steps into this gap, arguing that Matthew presents Jesus to be the continuation and culmination of John's ministry in order to strengthen the claims of Matthew's group and to vilify the opponents of his group. By doing this he encourages Jews yet to align with Matthew's group (particularly those who esteem the Baptist) and to gravitate away from its opponents. The author examines texts roughly contemporaneous with Matthew which reveal respect given to John the Baptist at the time of Matthew's composition. The examination of Matthew shows that the first Evangelist more closely connects the Baptist to Jesus while highlighting his rejection by Jewish authorities.

Book excerpt: By examining Black mixed-race identities in the city through a series of historical vantage points, Making Mixed Race provides in-depth insights into the geographical and historical contexts that shape the possibilities and constraints for identifications. Whilst popular representations of mixed-race often conceptualise it as a contemporary phenomenon and are couched in discourses of futurity, this book dislodges it from the current moment to explore its emergence as a racialised category, and personal identity, over time. In addition to tracing the temporality of mixed-race, the contributions show the utility of place as an analytical tool for mixed-race studies. The conceptual framework for the book – place, time, and personal identity – offers a timely intervention to the scholarship that encourages us to look outside of individual subjectivities and critically examine the structural contexts that shape Black mixed-race lives. The book centres around the life histories of 37 people of Mixed White and Black Caribbean heritage born between 1959 and 1994, in Britain’s second-largest city, Birmingham. The intimate life portraits of mixed identity reveal how colourism, family, school, gender, whiteness, racism, and resistance, have been experienced against the backdrop of post-war immigration, Thatcherism, the ascendency of Black diasporic youth cultures, and contemporary post-race discourses. It will be of interest to researchers, postgraduate and undergraduate students who work on (mixed) race and ethnicity studies in academic areas including geographies of race, youth identities/cultures, gender, colonial legacies, intersectionality, racism, and colourism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preached at Enfield, Connecticut on July 8, 1741, this is perhaps the greatest sermon ever preached in America—and is certainly among the most well known. Owing to its forthright dealing with God’s wrath and His intense hatred of sin and the sinner, it is also one of the most controversial. Indeed, for more than three-quarters of the sermon Edwards lays down a relentless stream of the most vivid and horrifying descriptions of the danger facing unregenerate men. While it is difficult to read such graphic language, there is abundant hope in the sermon’s conclusion. Edwards puts it this way, “And now you have an extraordinary opportunity, a day wherein Christ has thrown the door of mercy wide open and stands calling and crying with a loud voice to poor sinners.” While those who would rather ignore God’s justice in favor of His mercy condemn Edwards and his sermon, those who were present and actually heard him preach that day reacted in a decidedly different manner. According to the diary of Reverend Stephen Williams who attended the sermon, “Before the sermon was done there was a great moaning and crying through the whole House, ‘what shall I do to be saved; oh, I am going to hell, etc.’” The diary goes on to indicate that Edwards had to interrupt his sermon and come down to minister to those who were under such awful conviction. And so, in spite of what the scoffers might think or say, “the amazing and astonishing power of God” was manifested among the people that day—with many falling not into the hands of an angry God, but into the arms of a mighty Savior.

From editions of the Haggadah to portraits to anti-Semitic cartoons, diaries to newspapers to novels, it analyzes a vast array of works that both molded and revealed Jewish popular opinion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this theory-rich study, Shelby Johnson analyzes the works of Black and Indigenous writers in the Atlantic World, examining how their literary production informs "modes of being" that confronted violent colonial times. Johnson particularly assesses how these authors connected to places—whether real or imagined—and how those connections enabled them to make worlds in spite of the violence of slavery and settler colonialism. Johnson engages with works written in a period engulfed by the extraordinary political and social upheavals of the Age of Revolution and Indian Removal, and these texts—which include not only sermons, life writing, and periodicals but also descriptions of embodied and oral knowledge, as well as material objects—register defiance to land removal and other forms of violence. In studying writers of color during this era, Johnson probes the histories of their lived environment and of the earth itself—its limits, its finite resources, and its metaphoric mortality—in a way that offers new insights on what it means to imagine sustainable connections to the ground on which we walk.

Book excerpt: A powerful account of British missionaries, Peter and Brenda Griffiths, who played a critical role in the development of the Elim church in the aftermath of the Vumba massacre. Peter and Brenda Griffiths, Stephen's parents, and their team had set up a superb secondary school, only for guerrillas to slaughter almost all the staff. After their funerals Peter maintained that forgiveness for the attackers was the Christian thing to do. This is an inspiring story of Peter and Brenda's courage, sacrifice, and faithfulness in God, who despite the atrocities, continues to build His church in Zimbabwe.

He believed that God, through his Word and Spirit, had provided the guidelines and the power for this to be achieved. In this book, John Owen effectively dismisses various excuses for not engaging in self-scrutiny and yet avoids the current trend of self-absorption. In so doing, he provides principles to help believers live lives of holiness." [From back cover.]
