Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress, the pilgrims cannot reach the Celestial City without passing through Vanity Fair, where everything is bought and sold. In recent years there has been much analysis of commerce and consumption in Britain during the long eighteenth century, and of the dramatic expansion of popular publishing. Similarly, much has been written on the extraordinary effects of the evangelical revivals of the eighteenth century in Britain, Europe, and North America. But how did popular religious culture and the world of print interact? It is now known that religious works formed the greater part of the publishing market for most of the century. What religious books were read, and how? Who chose them? How did they get into people's hands? Vanity Fair and the Celestial City is the first book to answer these questions in detail. It explores the works written, edited, abridged, and promoted by evangelical dissenters, Methodists both Arminian and Calvinist, and Church of England evangelicals in the period 1720 to 1800. Isabel Rivers also looks back to earlier sources and forward to the continued republication of many of these works well into the nineteenth century. The first part is concerned with the publishing and distribution of religious books by commercial booksellers and not-for-profit religious societies, and the means by which readers obtained them and how they responded to what they read. The second part shows that some of the most important publications were new versions of earlier nonconformist, episcopalian, Roman Catholic, and North American works. The third part explores the main literary kinds, including annotated bibles, devotional guides, exemplary lives, and hymns. Building on many years' research into the religious literature of the period, Rivers discusses over two hundred writers and provides detailed case studies of popular and influential works.

Book excerpt: If we are saved by God's grace, what does it matter how we live? Why cannot we merely eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we might die? In this short treatment on "antinomianism" (meaning, "against the law"), Puritan extraordinaire John Flavel tackles this all-important topic and demonstrates from Scripture and reason why Christians are obliged to obey the law, even though we are under grace. The person who professes grace but denies the necessity of the moral law denies the very doctrine he or she supposedly professes. So, should Christians continue in sin so that grace may abound? Perhaps the apostle Paul put it best when he answered this very question-"God forbid!"Discover in these few short pages the necessity of the moral law in the life of the believer and see how it is integrally tied to the whole of the Christian life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Check to Antinomianism Our work has been entirely that of abridge ment.' We have omitted words, sentences, and even entire chapters, which, however needed by the exigencies of a prolonged controversy, add nothing to the clear exposition and definition of the author's doctrine. We hope that we have omitted no essential phase or demonstra tion of the truth set forth by the auth or. But with the exception of here and there a connect ing phrase or sentence, we have adhered strictly to his own words, lest we should mar the chaste English prose of the eighteenth century. We hope that the little volume thus produced may be of service, not only to our young preachers and students, but also to all earnest souls who desire a rational and scriptural exposition of Christian Perfection. Book excerpt: Richard Baxter wrote "The Saints' Everlasting Rest" to help prepare him for death during a life-threatening illness. It has inspired Christians for centuries to lift their eyes above this world to the place where they will spend eternity. Born in 1615, Richard Baxter lived and ministered throughout most of the seventeenth century. After being forced from his pulpit with some two thousand other Puritan ministers in the Great Ejection of 1660, he continued his writing ministry, authoring more than 140 books. Originally published in 1649, this work was forty-six chapters long, covering 844 pages. It was abridged in 1758, condensing it to sixteen chapters. Reading Baxter's book will challenge you to rediscover the wonders of the Lord through reflection and meditation. Taking captive our thoughts and making them obedient to Christ will make us strong in the faith and bring victory to our spiritual walks.--
