Book Synopsis The Unemployment Crisis in Australia by : Stephen Bell
Download or read book The Unemployment Crisis in Australia written by Stephen Bell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-06-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1970s the average level of unemployment in Australia has risen each decade. This has imposed huge economic, social and human costs, making unemployment one of the most pressing problems confronting Australia. Governments, however, seem powerless in the face of this problem. Drawing on the expertise of some of Australia's leading economists, this book, first published in 2000, argues that the currently fashionable approaches of wage cuts and further steps towards labour market flexibility will not solve the unemployment problem. In reality, unemployment and rising inequality are symptoms of the growing failure of contemporary labour markets to distribute jobs and incomes effectively. The contributors argue that the main solution to this problem is not wage cuts but jobs growth. This important book points to a way beyond the current policy malaise and offers detailed solutions to unemployment.

Book excerpt: This volume is the result of the Association for Canadian Studies in Australia and New Zealand (ACSANZ) 1995 conference held at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. A special feature of the conference, though not its exclusive focus, was trade relations. But as with all ACSANZ conferences, the papers were wide-ranging and contributors were not limited to a single theme. This publication is a refereed collection from more than sixty papers that were presented and range from discussions of immigration policy in Canada and Australia to architectural practices in British Columbia; from Canadian influences on Australia's economic development to issues of identity politics in each nation's literature. In addition, the collection represents major research in the areas of globalization, migration, pluralism, and ethnic relations, with a strongly, though not exclusively, comparative orientation. This work is a co-publication with the International Council for Canadian Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numbers of workers employed on a temporary basis has grown massively over the last few decades. The benefits to firms of hiring workers on a temporary basis are clear and generally can be reduced to their cheaper short term cost. The status of workers employed in this manner however means that they are less likely to receive the same rights as their permanent working colleagues. This impressive new book provides the first serious analysis of temporary work and its effect on the economy as well as its ramifications for workers.
Book Synopsis The Cambridge Economic History of Australia by : Simon Ville
Download or read book The Cambridge Economic History of Australia written by Simon Ville and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-08 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia's economic history is the story of the transformation of an indigenous economy and a small convict settlement into a nation of nearly 23 million people with advanced economic, social and political structures. It is a history of vast lands with rich, exploitable resources, of adversity in war, and of prosperity and nation building. It is also a history of human behaviour and the institutions created to harness and govern human endeavour. This account provides a systematic and comprehensive treatment of the nation's economic foundations, growth, resilience and future, in an engaging, contemporary narrative. It examines key themes such as the centrality of land and its usage, the role of migrant human capital, the tension between development and the environment, and Australia's interaction with the international economy. Written by a team of eminent economic historians, The Cambridge Economic History of Australia is the definitive study of Australia's economic past and present.
Book Synopsis States, Markets, Families by : Julia S. O'Connor
Download or read book States, Markets, Families written by Julia S. O'Connor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-01-28 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1990s have seen dramatic restructuring of state social provision in the US, the UK, Canada and Australia. This has occurred largely because of the rise of market liberalism, which challenges the role of the state. This important book examines the impact of changes in social policy regimes on gender roles and relations. Structured thematically and systematically comparative, it analyses three key policy areas: labor markets, income maintenance and reproductive rights. Largely driven by issues of equality, it considers the role of the state as a site for gender and sexual politics at a time when primacy is given to the market, developing an argument about social citizenship in the process. Eminent scholars in the field, Julia O'Connor, Ann Orloff and Sheila Shaver make a landmark contribution to debates about social policy and gender relations in this era of economic restructuring and deregulation.
